wassermanschultzRep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) calls in at 6:30am Pacific to talk about the economy, Gitmo, new emissions standards, credit card fairness, and other news of the day.

• Joined by an uncommon alliance of auto executives, union leaders, and environmental activists, President Obama yesterday announced a national program to cut new vehicle carbon emissions and raise mileage by 30 percent, while also reducing oil needs and changing the kinds of cars Americans buy.

• President Obama’s promise to close the Guantanamo Bay prison suffered a blow yesterday when his allies in the Senate said they would refuse to finance the move until the administration delivers a satisfactory plan for what to do with the detainees there.

The Senate voted overwhelmingly yesterday to rein in credit card rate increases and excessive fees, hoping to give voters some breathing room amid a recession. The House was on track to pass the measure as early as today, paving the way for President Obama to see the bill on his desk by week’s end.

steeleRNC Chairman Michael Steele declared yesterday that Republicans will no longer talk about their mistakes; instead they will focus on the future and serve as the loyal opposition party to President Obama and the congressional Dem majority. Steele offered no concrete plans or solutions.

• Confronting misgivings, even in his own party, President Obama mounted a stout defense of his blueprint to overhaul the economy yesterday, declaring the national crisis is “not as bad as we think” and his plans will speed recovery. He said that Americans shouldn’t be whipsawed by bursts of either bad or good news and he was “highly optimistic” about the long term.

• President Obama and Vice President Biden yesterday rallied a gathering of state officials yesterday, telling the people he is counting on to help turn around the economy and warning anew that he will not tolerate wasteful spending of his $787 billion economic stimulus package.

GOP national chairman Michael Steele said yesterday that he’s opposed to abortion and that Roe v. Wade should be repealed, commenting a day after GQ Magazine quoted him as saying abortion was “an individual choice.”

• Admitted Ponzi scheme operator Bernard Madoff pled guilty to 11 felony counts of fraud yesterday and a Manhattan judge ordered him handcuffed and taken straight to jail. He faces a 150 year sentence.

Mark Ebner, author of “Paris Hilton: Inside the Sex Tapes, Scandals, and Shakedowns of the New Hollywood,” calls in at 8:30am Pacific to talk about those scandals and shakedowns.

Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said yesterday the massive stimulus bill backed by President Barack Obama and congressional Dems could go down to defeat if it’s not stripped of unnecessary spending and focused more on housing issues and tax cut. The Senate version of the bill is headed to the floor for debate.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) introduced legislation over the weekend to cap the salaries of executives from companies that received federal bailout funds. The limit applies to salary, bonuses, and stock options and is set at $400,000, which is what the President of the United States earns.

Members of the Republican National Committee elected their first African-American party chief Friday, choosing former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele to chair the organization after six tumultuous rounds of voting. Steele has vowed to reach out to “friend and foe alike.”

Four prominent Dem senators spoke out Saturday in support of former Sen. Tom Daschle, whose tax records have come under scrutiny since President Obama nominated him to be secretary of Health and Human Services. The Senate Finance committee is to meet today to discuss the nomination.

• Pittsburgh improvised a 6-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left that gave the Steelers a record-setting sixth Super Bowl victory, 27-23 over the Arizona Cardinals last night.
