• Former President Jimmy Carter said yesterday that Rep. Joe Wilson’s outburst to President Obama during a speech to Congress last week was an act “based on racism” and rooted in fears of a black president.

The House formally rebuked Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) yesterday for shouting “You lie!” at President Obama during last week’s nationally televised speech. Lawmakers thought Wilson had violated basic rules of decorum and civility in his outburst.

ABC News says it was wrong for its employees to Tweet that President Obama had called Kanye West a “jackass” for the rapper’s treatment of country singer Taylor Swift. ABC said some of its employees overheard a conversation between the president and CNBC and didn’t realize the conversation was off the record.

President Obama sternly warned Wall Street yesterday against returning to the sort of reckless and unchecked behavior that threatened the nation with a second Great Depression. Obama warned the financial titans that they could not count on any more bailouts.

• Senate health care negotiators said yesterday they’ve narrowed their differences on a host of difficult issues with just a day or so left to seal an elusive bipartisan deal that could change the course of debate over President Obama’s plans to overhaul health care. Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) said he’ll have a formal proposal tomorrow to meet a deadline for moving ahead.

• House Dems reaffirmed plans to take up a resolution as early as today scolding defiant GOP Rep. Joe Wilson, who shocked colleagues by yelling “You lie!” during President Obama’s address to Congress last week.

• Patrick Swayze, the actor who danced his way into viewers’ hearts with “Dirty Dancing” and then broke them with “Ghost,” died yesterday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

President Obama will try today to revive a stalled push for stricter oversight of Wall Street. Obama’s economic address in New York will also discuss plans to unwind the government’s involvement in the financial sector and call upon Wall Street firms to take responsibility and avoid reckless behavior.

One apology is enough, a digging-in-his-heels Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) said yesterday, challenging Dem leaders who want him to say on the house floor that he’s sorry for yelling “You lie!” during President Obama’s health care speech.

• Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich) said Friday that the Obama administration shouldn’t send more U.S. combat troops to Afghanistan until it has worked first to boost the Afghan security forces. While other Dems are expressing doubt about sending more troops into Afghanistan, GOP-ers are backing Obama’s expected troop increase.

• An audio message purportedly from Al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has accused President Obama of being unable to fulfill his election pledge to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq.

Democratic congressional leaders predicted passage of health care legislation within a few months despite undimmed GOP opposition, claiming momentum yesterday from President Obama’s speech and renewed commitment from lawmakers fresh from a month of meetings with constituents.

President Obama accepted Rep. Joe Wilson’s (R-SC) apology for shouting, “You lie!” during his speech to Congress, and House Dem leaders are showing no interest in sanctions against Wilson. “It’s time for us to talk about health care, not Mr. Wilson,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

• Rob Miller, the opponent of Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), who yelled “You lie!” at President Obama during his speech to Congress on health care, has raised nearly $600,000 in just one day.

Solemn memorial services in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania today are marking the 8th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. In Washington, President Obama will be at the Pentagon, where he will make remarks and participate in a wreath-laying ceremony for the 184 victims when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building’s west wall.

President Obama last night made a passionate call for Congress to fix the nation’s ailing health care system in the same spirit that created Social Security and Medicare in difficult times. He offered his most detailed outline for legislation while challenging GOP opponents to build on issues of agreement rather than play politics to exploit differences.

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) shouted “You lie” during President Obama’s health care speech to Congress last night, and members of both parties condemned the heckling. Wilson called the White House to apologize and spoke with Rahm Emanuel, who accepted the apology on the president’s behalf. “We can disagree without being disagreeable,” Emanuel said to Wilson. “That was the point of the speech.”
