• The White House says President Obama doesn’t believe he’s being criticized because of his race. They were asked about the topic following comments on Tuesday by former President Jimmy Carter. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says some people have disagreements with some of Obama’s decisions but that those concerns were not because of his race.

• ACORN, an advocacy group under fire after some employees were caught on camera appearing to advise a couple posing as a prostitute and pimp to lie about the woman’s profession to get housing help, said Wednesday it is ordering an independent investigation and is refusing new admissions into its service programs.

• Mary Travers of 1960’s folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary, has died, according to her publicist. She was 72.

• Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the lead GOP senator in bipartisan health care negotiations, said yesterday that he urged President Obama this month to make clear he would accept a bill without a government-funded public insurance option. A White House spokesman yesterday expressed doubt that Grassley’s plea to Obama had any impact on weekend comments by Kathleen Sebelius that a public option is “not an essential element” of health care reform.

• Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday that information her husband brought back from North Korea has been “extremely helpful” by providing a window into what’s happening in the reclusive country.

• Hurricane Bill, the first hurricane of the 2009 Atlantic season, strengthened into a Category 3 storm yesterday with top winds near 125mph. It looks likely to miss the U.S. East Coast.

• Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the longest-serving GOPer on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said yesterday that he believes Sonia Sotomayor is headed for a Supreme Court confirmation.

• Veteran GOP Sen. Arlen Specter disclosed plans yesterday to switch parties, bringing the Dems closer to the 60-vote supermajority they need to push President Obama’s agenda through the Senate. Specter called it a “painful decision,” and said he was disappointed by the reactions of his colleagues on the Right.

• As he enters his 100th day in office today, more than 6 in 10 Americans approve of Obama’s job, nearly two-thirds view him favorably, and a majority believe he has gotten off to a solid start during his first three months on the job, according to a new NBC News / Wall Street Journal poll.

• The toll from the swine flu epidemic appears to be stabilizing in Mexico, the health secretary said late last night, with only seven more suspected deaths. Cuba and Argentina became the first two countries to ban travel to and from Mexico outright.  The first American death from swine flu, a Texas baby, was confirmed this morning.

• Author and theologian Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners and author of “God’s Politics,” calls in at 6:30am Pacific to talk about working with President Obama on faith issues.

• Leaders of the world’s largest economies agreed yesterday to a package worth more than $1 trillion to tackle the global economic crisis. President Obama called the deal a “turning point in our pursuit of global economic recovery.” The plan calls for reform of the international banking system and the injection of more than $1 trillion into the world financial system.

• The Senate passed a $3.53 trillion version of the federal budget for fiscal year 2010 late last night in a party-line vote, ending several weeks of acrimonious partisan debate. Earlier in the evening, the House passed its own version of the spending plan – a $3.55 trillion budget.

• Impeached former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was arrested in December on charges of conspiracy and fraud, was indicted yesterday on 16 felony counts by a federal grand jury. The 19-count indictment charges Blagojevich and some of his closest aides with a wide-ranging “scheme to deprive the people of Illinois of honest government.” Blagojevich maintains he is innocent.
