• Closing the Guantanamo Bay detention facility is necessary and President Obama’s decision to set a one-year deadline on doing so was probably the only way to get it done, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said yesterday in testimony before the House Armed Services Committee.
• Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was absent again yesterday from his Senate impeachment trial, but state senators who will decide whether to remove him from office heard him loud and clear on FBI recordings of his phone calls.
