• Former President Bill Clinton told anxious Senate Dems yesterday to pass a health care bill soon because the U.S. economy can’t resist the toxic combination of exorbitant medical costs and nearly 50 million uninsured for much longer.
• Caution returned to the stock market yesterday as investors decided to slow an advance that has lifted the Dow Jones industrial average 475 points in five days. Stocks fell in light trading, though the Dow tacked on 20 points to close at a new high for the year.
• A senior government official tells ABC News that investigators have found that alleged Ft. Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan had “more unexplained connections to people being tracked by the FBI” than just radical cleric Anwar al Awlaki. Names and countries of origin are likely to emerge soon, according to officials.

• Former President Bill Clinton is expected to speak to Senate Democrats today about the importance of health care legislation during their weekly caucus. President Obama wants to sign the legislation into law by the end of the year, but abortion opponents in the Senate are seeking tough restrictions in the bill.
• Nearly a year before Maj. Nidal Hasan allegedly went on a shooting rampage at Ft. Hood, terrorism investigators conducted an “assessment” of him before deciding he did not pose a threat. After the shooting, the FBI is doing a new assessment – of its own conduct. President Obama, meanwhile, will attend a memorial service for the victims today at Ft. Hood.
• D.C. Sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad will be executed today for the attacks that terrorized the nation’s capital region for three weeks in 2002.

• Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the lead GOP senator in bipartisan health care negotiations, said yesterday that he urged President Obama this month to make clear he would accept a bill without a government-funded public insurance option. A White House spokesman yesterday expressed doubt that Grassley’s plea to Obama had any impact on weekend comments by Kathleen Sebelius that a public option is “not an essential element” of health care reform.
• Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday that information her husband brought back from North Korea has been “extremely helpful” by providing a window into what’s happening in the reclusive country.
• Hurricane Bill, the first hurricane of the 2009 Atlantic season, strengthened into a Category 3 storm yesterday with top winds near 125mph. It looks likely to miss the U.S. East Coast.

• Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today expressed happiness and relief at the release of two journalists, on whose behalf her husband, former President Bill Clinton, sought amnesty from North Korea. North Korea pardoned Laura Ling and Euna Lee after the former US president arrived in Pyongyang.
• After a “pep talk” from President Obama, Senate Dems said yesterday they believe Congress will pass a bipartisan health care bill this year. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) now says the Dem senators are ready to “take on the world.”
• Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top US commander in Afghanistan, is expected to ask the Obama administration for additional troops and equipment for conducting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, as well as more military resources to deal with roadside bombs and explosives.
• Paula Abdul announced yesterday that she will not be returning to American Idol when the show debuts its ninth season early next year.

• The White House shot down concerns yesterday that middle-class families may face a tax increase in order to combat rising deficits and a struggling economy. The concern came after the Obama administration’s two top money men floated the idea that tax increases to fund the nation’s economic recovery could extend into the middle class.
• Frustrated with the pace of bipartisan talks, Dem leaders yesterday promised to push a sweeping health care bill through the Senate whether they get GOP support or not.
• Former President Bill Clinton made an unannounced visit to North Korea this morning on a trip seen as a mission to win the release of two jailed American reporters and to ease tensions over Pyongyang’s recent nuclear defiance.

• House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) calls in at 8:30am Pacific to tell us about the progress being made in passing President Obama’s economic stimulus plan.
• The Senate plans to vote on the $789 billion compromise stimulus late tonight after an all-day debate, Majority Leader Harry Reid said yesterday from the chamber floor. The House, which had planned to vote on the package yesterday, delayed it until today after many rank-and-file Dems who were unhappy with some spending cuts demanded time to read the compromise measure.
• Republican Sen. Judd Gregg withdrew his nomination as President Barack Obama’s commerce secretary yesterday, citing “irresolvable conflicts” over the administration’s stimulus bill and the upcoming 2010 census. He’s the second nominee to withdraw from consideration for the post after Bill Richardson withdrew in January.
• The Senate last night confirmed Leon Panetta as CIA director by unanimous consent. Panetta, who served as President Clinton’s chief of staff, now becomes the oldest person to head the spy agency at 70.
• A Continental Airlines plane crashed into a home near Buffalo, NY late last night, killing 44 passengers and 4 crew members. One person in the home was also killed.
