Newt Gingrich has won the South Carolina Republican primary, held this past Saturday. Gingrich spent most of his speech Saturday night lashing out at “media elites” in New York and Washington, D.C., while castigating President Obama.

Mitt Romney says that he will release his 2010 tax return and an estimate of his 2011 tax liability tomorrow. This is a big change in his plans for handling an issue that dogged his campaign last week and follows his big loss in the South Carolina primary.

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D) will resign from Congress this week, she announced in a video message posted Sunday. “I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona I will step down this week,” she said in a video message posted to YouTube.

• After winning their respective playoff games this weekend, The New England Patriots and the New York Giants will meet in Super Bowl XLVI.
