Comedian Carlos Alazraqui joins us in the Los Angeles Bureau at 9am ET / 6am PT for all three hours of “Coffee With Carlos”

Charlie Pierce of The Boston Globe and “Idiot America” calls in at 10am ET / 7am PT to talk about the debt ceiling deal

Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY) calls in at 10:30am ET / 7:30am PT to talk about yesterday’s passage of the debt deal

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) calls in at 11:30am ET / 8:30am PT to talk about the debt ceiling deal and what’s next for Congress

The U.S. avoided a feared and catastrophic default on the American debt, as lawmakers on Tuesday passed a measure that ties an agreement to raise the government’s capacity to borrow to steep cuts in government spending. President Obama quickly signed it into law.

A partisan stalemate that has partially shut down the Federal Aviation Administration will continue into September, stopping airport construction projects and depriving federal coffers of potentially more than $1 billion in uncollected ticket taxes, after congressional attempts to reach deal fell through on Tuesday.

A homeless man was in custody Tuesday night after climbing over the White House fence, the Secret Service said. The White House was in lockdown, and no one was allowed to leave the grounds, while authorities investigated the incident.

Hi,
I love Chris, I love Jim.
Coffee with Carlos is definitely a redundancy in regard to Chris and Jim.
Stephanie don't do this to yourself, please.
I like Hal.

"an angry/happy-clappy/straight/lesbian/gay/ female/hermaphrodite/male"

We, the middle class, are caught in a "jobs pickle." The House won't introduce a jobs bill to let the government put people to work and the corporations won't hire people because it will reduce unemployment and help Obama be re-elected. Nobody cares about the man in the middle!

It is class warfare against us. The Elite have
been skinning us alive. Their minions in congress
do their bidding. They have the money, the Media,
the Rethug party and half the Dems. We got the
numbers, and the truth. We will win, but it's
gonna be long & bloody.

Congressperson is right and that's what the Rethugs want to have Obama (Hoover) fail.

Tinsel Talk anyone? I'm a bored multi-colored canine.

Obama on line one, Steph. ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Where are the people in the streets protesting to raise taxes? That's the problem. Polls may say people are in favor of a balanced approached (revenue/spending cuts) and are even in favor of taxing the rich, but most don't fight for things that don't impact them directly. If polls were so influential, why didn't they feel compelled to include revenue when all the polls said they should? I don't believe any of them think there are consequences for not including revenue raising mechanisms...and I think they're right.

Hey Carlos, will Crazy Cat Lady be on today?

Hang in there, Steph! You defend this President, because everyone is so quick to call him names. He did a lot to keep this economy from crashing, and to keep the Republicans from dismantling Social Security and Medicare. He kept us from defaulting; Pell Grants increased; no Balanced Budget Amendments; and cuts are backloaded, hopefully during a stronger economy. The Republicans will have to duke it out between the high earners taxes and the military industrial complex - who will they choose? This President always has us in mind - and you are on the right side of history with him! Thank you for standing firm! I'll see you in Seattle!

17, how come you get it but the emo progressives don't?

caller is right.the House is getting Obama to do their job for them.

government spending = jobs = economic recovery

In regards to the 14th amendment... can you imagine if the president used the 14th amendment to raise the debt ceiling? For the remainder of his first term we would have to deal with right wing idiots calling him a 'communist' and trying to impeach him... Nothing would get accomplished.

13 thank you. There is a massive PSYOPS machine
operating on and against the American people. Its
gigantic & effective.

11 - yes, we are a center-right country, that's why we need to focus our bashing/criticism on horrid conservative actions and fight FOR Obama and get lots of quality progressives in office. Alan Grayson lost because we were lazy as a party.

12 - YES! Let's get the dinos out so it's much more clear what the president has to work with. Bill Clinton had reasonable Republicans to broker deals with . Obama has no one. Even if there were some stray conservatives who would consider working with him, they won't jeopardize re-election so they choose the path to insanity. Can't reason with that.

"I'm just gonna go home, drink a box
of wine, take a hot bath and gently
masturbate myself to sleep" -- Steph. NO, wait,
that was from 'Workaholics'

11. we aren't a center-right country.we are a country propagandized by mass corporate media.

5 Obama should do all that stuff. Lets get
rid of all the Blow Dog Dems & the teabagger
morons and the Corporatist Rethug Bastards

and then he could do that stuff. Until then,
good luck to him, and us, we're getting royally
screwed without grease by these class-war-waging
Elite scumbags. F@#$K Rupert Merde-och. F@#$%GK
the filth Koch Bros.

Jim, Carlos, et. al. The reason the right is more successful is that more Americans think like them than like progressives. I live in a blue state, but I come across more people in my daily life that think like tea-partiers than progressives. The only time most people care about progressive ideals is when it impacts them personally (e.g. SS, medicare). They may say they're okay with raising taxes on the rich, but would they go out and actively protest/advocate for that? No. Will they protest if you raise THEIR taxes? Of course. We are a center-right country.

wetblanket, you are being sarcastic, no?

Obama 2012. Quit your bitching, focus, attack the blue dogs, attack the rethugs - let's get this done.

it's not about black and white, it's about Obama being a political neophyte who's trying to copy Clinton and it's not working.

Just wondering if Jim & Carlos have any ideas on what Edward G Robinson and Dr. Laura would sound like in the throes of passion.

It has been 2 1/2 years since Obama came into office - Why hasn't he
Fixed the debt crisis,
Reversed the housing crisis
Ended unemployment
Stopped 3 wars
...Revamped the entire financial system
Spurred economic growth
Handled immigration
Totally fixed the health care system
Provided Gays with marriage and other rights
Taken the lead on tsunamis, floods, and droughts
Fended off terrorist threats,
Found a solution to the whole energy and oil crisis yet?
Stopped the spillage of oil into the environment.
Provided true equality for Blacks and other minorities.
C'Mon Progressives!

The WCPT listen live link in Chicago is not working this AM . . . doing the ustream right now.

Happy Hump Day Tim, Barbara and all Livebloggers

Singer Tony Bennett is 85, former IL state senator Roland Burris is 74, actor Martin Sheen is 71, Martha Stewart is the big Seven-OH, Dennis the Mennace actor Jay North is the big Six-OH, French actor and singer Lambert Wilson is 53 (please see the extraordinary movie "Of Gods and Men" now out of DVD), and Scrubs actor John C McGinley is 52. Happy Birthdays Leos!

I'll miss Hal today, but I'm really looking forward to hearing Carlos for all three hours.

Tim, sorry to hear that Dallas is still in the grips of a 100 degree heatwave. Hope you're able to stay in the airconditioning today. (refutation...I get it. )

Dallas hit 110 f****** degrees yesterday (the f does not stand for fahrenheit), the hottest day here for over a decade. It was the 32nd straight day of 100+, with at least another week forecast. I'm not a religious person, but I spend most of my evenings praying that my air conditioner continues working.

Meanwhile, I thought I'd follow up the obscure website plug that I did Monday with another one. It an economic analysis blog called "Vox Rationalis" written by David Clayton. "Who?", you say. "I have no idea", I reply. I came across it a while back by accident. If you don't mind seeing some number crunching, it's a no-nonsense refutation of many of the right-wing economic arguments.
