Black on Black

"In the days of slavery, there were those slaves who lived on the plantation and [there] were those slaves that lived in the house. You got the privilege of living in the house if you served the master ... exactly the way the master intended to have you serve him. Colin Powell's committed to come into the house of the master. I hope that you will find it convenient to answer my letter in regards to future possibilities." -- Former Klansman and current US Senator Robert Byrd, a man who is referred to by many Democrats as the "conscience of the Senate", in a letter written in 1946, after he quit the KKK.

Uncle Will says that the Lord made a White man from dust, a nigger from mud, then He threw up what was left and it came down a Chinaman. He does hate Chinese and Japs. So do I. It is race prejudice, I guess. But I am strongly of the opinion Negroes ought to be in Africa, Yellow men in Asia and White men in Europe and America." Harry Truman (1911) in a letter to his future wife Bess

"There's some people who've gone over the state and said, 'Well, George Wallace has talked too strong about segregation.' There's not any middle ground as I know of." -- Democratic Alabama Governor George Wallace (1959)

"Now that nation called Israel, never has had any peace in forty years and she will never have any peace because there can never be any peace structured on injustice, thievery, lying and deceit and using the name of God to shield your dirty religion under his holy and righteous name." -- Louis Farrakhan who campaigned for congresswoman Cynthia McKinney in 2002, 1984

a few of us (dem's and independent's) got together tonight. we wanted to write each show we know. I wish sometimes you could be a little more serious with these problems and hate the republican's on your own time. I had not listened to your show, and a friend suggested I do. We have written Ed Shultz, Norman Goldman, and some others. They all said don't write S. Miller it's a waste of time. Thought you would like to know. One of our group spent years in radio and said that we are probably not your demographic. He said 18 to 24 probably loves her. Sure would be nice to take you more seriously....

I've got his 2012 campaign slogan! Joe Walsh; working hard to reform entitlements for dependent children.

If Sarah Palin is caribou barbie does that make Michelle Bachmann hillbilly barbie? You get one guess on who's husband would make the best Ken.

Keep ticking off a tea-bagger, they'll get teste.

#34: Witchy O'Donnell lays it all out there - warts and all.

Dear Stephanie and "Gang",
You are all great and I listen lots.
Just wanted to tell you what a great job you and your guests and regulars do!
Have (1st time ever) written, called and emailed my President, Congressmen, and Dick Durbin, my Senator.
You, Ed, and Thom inspired me to finally take, at least start to take some action and do something.
My political ideas are pretty close to Senator Bernie Sanders (Emailed him, too.) and Dennis Kucinich. Just FYI!
Please, Please keep up the light-hearted and right minded and good hearted work!

Again THANKS, Peter Economos

PS: Suprise, I am a registered Republican (Haven't voted GOP for 20 plus years!)
College Degree in Commerce and a Small businessman for 24 yrs..
After selling my business in 1999, I got a job and became a member of a union (SEIU) and without
their health insurance I would lost everything when got Cancer in 2003! (Heath insurance was costing me close to $1000.00 a month for my family when I was only 52 yrs. old!)
Ryan's plan, what a joke , what planet does he live on?
I am a survivor and doubt that I would have been without that Union and their insurance.
In fact, (I dought that the Doctors would have done the operation that saved my life)
I would be dead and/or broke or "both" without Medicare and Social Security.
(Regan/Bush did nothing for small business, FYI)
Surprise, I am 65 yrs. old and white.
My parents were Republican and voted for your Father and my Dad was a young Republican and hated FDR but took Social Security and Medicare. Especially when he was on dialysis for 3 yrs.!
Just to brag; on my mother's side of my family My (many Great) Grandfather was the 3rd man in, behind Ethan Allen, into Fort Ticonderoga at the first victory over the British in the year 1775!!
My Great Great Grandpa fought in the Civil War for the North (Have 2 pics. of him, too!).
The rest of the family fought in most of this Country's legitimate wars, too, including WW2.
That side of the family came to the Colonies in the 1600s!
My Dad's family have been here for over 100 yrs.
All this "long story" just to tell you I am "REAL AMERICAN" and this is how I think and vote!
So there Yurtle!
Keep it up please. We need you all!
Thanks again.

you get hairy feet from playing with yourself, Christine

For those of us who are old enough to remember the original Saturday Night Live skits, Laura Ingram sounds just like one of the Coneheads.

secular left? as opposed to christo-fascist right, Ingraham?

Didn't quite get Jim's "Do The Right Thing" reference.

Article II Section 3 gives the Executive branch the power to enforce the law. The Constitution is the supreme law of the nation, so there is no legal bar to presidential action in this matter.

That's not what the constitution says, it states,
"Section 5. The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article"

Which means Congress has the power to enforce the article, but doesn't take an act of Congress, nor is it required

We are all in a very leaky economic boat, all responsible people are trying to bail like crazy to keep us from sinking and the tea party is busy drilling a hole in the bottom.

#21: Someone needs to throw a cordon round that caucus before it does any more damage.

wtf does Obama think is going to happen from the "useless eaters" calling their congress-people? crikey.

"Duh, what's the pres'dent talking about triple-A's for? All my remotes run on double-A's, so I'm good to go. Don't tax my double-A's!"

Mama's Mama had GOT to go and see Steph et al

Boner needs to grab his caucus in both hands and flog the hell out of it.

I love always hearing about what the unelected Karl Rove, the unelected Grover Norquist and the unelected Lush Rimjob think, because some ELECTED representatives always have to get their approval for some reason.

I think that was Danielle.

#15: A bridge falls down, people die; villagers with pitchforks and torches go looking for the monster that made it happen. Turns out the big bad gub'mint was the only thing holding the bridge UP. Lesson learned? Till next time...

good morning fellow handbasket-riders. i picked a helluva day to quit chew sticks

Maybe actually starting to drown government (teachers, military families, FAA air controllers) in a bathtub will backfire on the right and people will start to appreciate what government and community action do for them and reject the whole "gub'ment is bad" meme. Maybe.

Morning all. Re. "Who needs the FAA": remember the politician who landed his plane on a closed runway, endangering ground crew? That's the Ayn Rand way - if you've got a plane you can put down wherever you want. Stupid bureaucrats telling me where to land...

Hi Steph, John, and Mooks,

I haven't been able to listen in AGES, & this is my first time posting on the live blog. Congrats on being Woman of the Year in Talkers mag, Steph!

Bill Maher was on Laurence O'Donnell recently and said several important things that I wish Obama would take to heart. Dems in general & the Prez miss opportunities to educate the American people. Here is a simple statement that should be repeated continuously:

The Debt Ceiling is about the past. The Budget is about the future. — Bill Maher

Why Obama continues to allow the 2 to be confused in the minds of the American public is beyond me!!!

Get the trains running. Auto spell makes me chew my hair.

7 Bamalam, 8 Robby, as to Chris's concern, remember, people love dictators who het the trains running on time after a period of chaos.

I am really surprised it took this long for the CEOs of J P Morgan et al to sit up and take notice and start to rein in their paid political lackeys. Apparently the Chinese (our biggest debt holders) have been paying closer attention than Wall Street. A letter to the White House? Just now? Really? From where, Martha's Vineyard?

If you think for a second that the American people would be more understanding about Obama NOT using the 14th Amendment when it's the only option left than him using it and saving millions from total and complete financial ruin and looking like a "Dictator" then you have about as much understanding about how things work as the rest of these Tea Party morons.

Regarding not wanting Obama to use the 14th Amendment, get over it. Truman signed an executive order invoking the 14th after Congress was unable to pass a bill to raise the debt ceiling. Obama would not be the first to do so as precedent has already been set as a result.

Happy Friday Board - looks like a great show today.

Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis is 86, formerly sane politician Elizabeth Dole is 75 and her fellow Republican Marilyn Quayle turns 62, actor Stephen Dorff is 38, country music's Martina McBride is 45, documentary producer Ken Burns and Project Runway's Tim Gunn are both 58, Sopranos actor Tony Sirico is 69 and costume designer Ray Aghayan is 77. Happy Birthdays Leos!

Anyone read Paul Krugman's latest in the New York Times: The Centrist Cop-out? Great article, and required reading for all you sexy-liberal listeners out there. cheers and happy friday!!!!

Sue! Just heard you on Bill Press. You nailed it!

The smart thing for Congress to do would be to come together and put the teabaggers in their place (on the fringe.) Left and right should come together, pass the debt ceiling with a clean bill. Then, put the "tax and cut" talks where they belong......in the budget talks. Expose these a$$hats to the voters. Demonstrate that these teabaggers are the ones responsible for this artificial crisis. We're all about to suffer economically because of these nutters. It's unreal.

Yes. I agree with you.

A week ago in his press conference, Obama wondered about the Republicans: "can they say 'yes' to anything?" I think his question was answered yesterday.
