• President Obama met with Japan’s new leader this morning in Tokyo, hoping to shore up relations with a nation that vows to be more assertive with the United State, even as Obama also weighs whether to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan.
• In what could be one of the biggest counterterrorism seizures in U.S. history, federal prosecutors sought to seize four U.S. mosques and a New York City skyscraper owned by a Muslim organization suspected of being controlled by the Iranian government.
• Self-proclaimed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Gitmo detainees will be sent to New York to face trial in a civilian federal court. Attorney General Eric Holder plans to announce the decision later in the morning. It is considered a key step in President Obama’s plan to close the Gitmo detention center.
• Top White House counsel Greg Craig is announcing his resignation today. Craig has been dogged by talk that plans to close Gitmo by January went awry under his leadership.
