Part of the issue of gay-bashing is that homophobia doesn’t seem to be about hating/fearing homosexuality per se, but a rage and phobia by certain males against any other man who fails to conform to normative male sex roles.

So beating someone up for being “gay” may be about being homosexual. Or Emo. Or effeminate. Or not sexually aggressive toward women. Or bookish.

Yes, gays are especially targeted for this, but “gayness” as a target by bashers is broader than homosexuality.
