Number #1 Radio Progressive Morning Show, THE STEPHANIE MILLER SHOW

CARBONITE

LiveBlog for Tuesday, September 8, 2009

rudepunditThe Rude Pundit (Lee Papa) calls in at 7:30am Pacific to talk about all the rudeness we missed while we were on vacation.

ObamaSmile• In a speech that drew fire even before he delivered it, President Obama is telling the nation’s schoolchildren he “expects great things from each of you.” Obama is scheduled to deliver the talk from a school in Virginia today. Conservatives have urged schools and parents to boycott the address, saying that Obama is using the opportunity to “indoctrinate” their children.

President Obama insisted yesterday “the time is now” for healthcare reform as he geared up for a major address to Congress tomorrow aimed at getting his top domestic priority back on track. “It’s time to do what’s right for America’s working families,” Obama told a wildly cheering crowd at a Labor Day picnic held by the AFL-CIO in Ohio.

• After a nearly 40-day recess that was anything but restful, House Dems are returning to work today still unsettled over pending health care legislation. Conservatives are still leery of supporting a government-funded insurance option and Progressives are still threatening to bring down the legislation if it does not contain a robust version of the public option.

Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), who is the Senate Finance Committee Chairman, has circulated a new proposal that could breathe new life into health care reform. Baucus’ proposal does not include a public option, but calls for health care cooperatives to be included in health care exchanges.

    PERHAPS A THREE WAY TIE
back when i was young and naive (9>9>3) i believed that this was simply and without much challenge the best video made so far:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NHjtu1GA4o&feature=PlayList&p=F5D53F52EA83DF1F&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=1
but then i discovered this equally soulful gem, post 194 in the SMS liveblog of 9>9>4, presented by gabby hayes:
“I think beck only sees the dark skin of Obama and considers him black (to a racist, a single drop of black blood constitutes membership in the black race). He thinks Obama considers people of color to be superior to white people. There is no rational reason for this belief, but it is not the sort of thinking that is vulnerable to rational discussion. He hates Obama because he is dark skinned and has a status that is higher than his own (just as in many Arab nations Jews were not allowed to ride on burros or horses, because that would place them physically higher and therefore superior to arabs who were not on horseback or riding burros). Because his rational brain requires a rationalization for his hatred, he will take any negative stereotype and retroactively attach it to Obama’s behavior and motives. Therefore, there is no contradiction in a brain like Beck’s in calling him both a communist and a nazi because he hates communists and hates a
concept he has in mind of a nazi, so clearly those epithets can be safely applied to Obama. If he hated spiders and snakes, Obama would take on spiderlike and snakelike attributes. If he was lactose intolerant, Obama would be like a big banana smoothie.” — YES ! a soulful, insightful, and impressively concise compendium about the retarded paradigms that are charitably allowed passage into the nomenclature that flatters them as political discourse. in addition, gabby’s post even has the additional advantage of being safe to watch with the sound turned up. — AND it calls to mind this other rather engaging video bearing its own unstoppable dosage of pulchritude: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhBvvZ7PMUE
i mean, the banana-smoothieness quotient here is astounding…. and yes, only up to 2:15 is essential. — but then, as i was perusing for the latest coverage of the reno tomatino and toastydude, i stumbled upon some michael gorman. – i’ve never met michael gorman, but i’ve served many years in sacramento, and gorman is a highly respected and frequently published pillar of the community. observe this essay, and understand why.
one thing sure to impress, is that the real meaning comes across,
even thoe the language is, as per gorman’s style, very polite.
dotcomrades, observe and enjoy this third example, of how well crafted a video can actually be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N_8AnzFXTw&feature=PlayList&p=833C0D681AE3E777&index=2&playnext=2&playnext_from=PL

  2. SueC says:

Good Morning Bloggies! I’ve been away from the blog for awhile…just not much time most mornings. Welcome Back Steph and Mooks! Hal was awesome, did a great job; but you all were still missed:-)

Oh No! Today is the day–grab your children! Keep them out of school today! Horrors–the prez is going to indoctrinate your children with such anti-American, evil rhetoric like, “stay in school”; be responsible”; listen to your teachers”; getting a good education is key to your future”; etc, etc…! Scary!

  3. Hi Sue, good morning! Wow, I’m ready for Stephanie and the Mooks again, I NEED some humorous sparkling conversation this morning.

Yes, today is the day that President Obama indoctrinates our innocent, vulnerable little school kiddies into Marxism, Socialism, Facism, Nazism, etc. Lovely day!

I wonder if the Repubs will manage an adult to stand up to the extremos who have commandeered their party? By 2012.. The vacuum of realistic conservative (what used to be) “thought” has been filled by garbage..

  4. Skyhawk says:

Morning peeps. Hope you all had a good weekend. Ready for a great short week with momma and the mooks!

  5. carein2205 says:

good morning all. welcome back gang.

  6. shāf says:

Good morning, SueC, and the rest of the early risers! Welcome back, Mama, Emmy Award-wining Voice Deity and ProducerChris! I hope you all had a great vacation off. Thanks again to Hal, Tony and Rebekah for holding down the fort. They did a great job.

Sen. Max Baucus is now entitled to one big steaming cup of STFU. A bill with no public option (not even a so-called “trigger” for the option in case insurance companies do not play fair) is a total appeasement to the moneyed interests. Senator, you have done us all a great disservice.

  7. flombaye says:

thank you sue c; scary dark heavy pendulous gay nazi socialist terrorist-around-with-pallin storm clouds duly noted. – indeed, the deliciousness of the impending attempts to memefy this development were framed optimally by “progressive in texas” in the blog of sept 4: “Republicans demand equal time to rebut President Obama’s address to School Students wherein he will stress the importance of studying, working hard, earning good grades and graduating.
I can just imagine how the rebuttal will sound coming from a party that distains education, deplores independent cognitive reasoning and considers all intellectuals to be commies:
“…go play with your Nintendo’s and X-boxes. A College Education is over rated. Wouldn’t you rather have a fun job like Joe the Plumber?””

  8. I wonder just what the Repubs think they will rebut? Hahahah

  9. hi
1,2 the subtext of the Rethug ‘outrage’ over the President’s
speech to schoolchildren is disgusting: ‘Obama will molest our
kids’, ‘We can’t Trust Obama with our Children’s fragile minds’,
‘what’s he gonna SAY to them, the Pervert…’

it makes me sick. and after eight years of the lying, manipulating,
brainwashing s#%t wrapped with skin A#@hole spewing his BS… with
his evil minion Dickie STILL doing it… argh! it’s too early.

I’m just upset. Glad Momma is back. Here’s how yesterday went at
my house: woke up to six policemen chasing a murderer through my
yard, past my bedroom window. He killed my neighbor. The woman
who lived right behind us. Poor Sandra!
    http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2009/09/southfield_woman_able_to_call.html

“Southfield woman able to call 911 before dying from multiple gunshot wounds; sometimes-boyfriend found hiding in nearby yard”

sorry to inflict that on all of you, but I can’t get over it yet.
The police spent the day searching our yard for the gun.

Back to something happier… Stephie’s back in four minutes.

  10. 5 Max Baccus is an odious little poison-toad in the pockets
of Big Insurance. May he be inflicted with seven deadly
disfiguring diseases… this week, that pus bag

  11. SueC says:

#6–LOL. Oh wait, maybe that’s too close to the truth to be so funny…!

#5–Agreed, Shaf, on Sen. Baucus and STFU. Co-ops sound like the worst idea; reform is nothing without a public option, in my view.

  12. shāf says:

    It’s Miller Time!

  13. shāf says:

Yes, it’s a Tuesday that feels like a Monday.

  14. flombaye says:

admit it. steph’s vacation footage looks great.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW5IBncfU2g&feature=related

  15. SueC says:

#8–Wow, so sorry to hear about your neighbor.

  16. 6, 7 Rethug ReButtal… drop out of skool, kiddies, don’t learn
to THINK… take dope, hang out with hookers, even better let
us send you off to an illegal, immoral, unnecessary War of Aggression!

  17. Deb says:

    Morning folks…

#9 – not just baccus but that whole nasty little group.

  18. gabby hayes says:

Once john f kennedy addressed my school and I havent been the same since.

  19. Deb says:

Gee do you think Obama will talk to the kids about tax increases like Reagan did?

  20. gabby hayes says:

15 that was the crux of jfk’s speech

  21. gabby hayes says:

republicans have already stated their opposition to coops.

  22. 14 thank you Sue, it’s horrifying. This is a quiet neighborhood.
She was a great person, a social worker who worked with kids in
trouble… we went to her barbeque, saw her all the time.

  23. flombaye says:

just found this one, and survived 18 seconds of it. would some brave soul care to tell us how steph and randi wind up in this one ?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8fFcn7uC2Y&feature=related

  24. SueC says:

Happy Anniversary! We are all better for your wonderful little radio show:-)

  25. 16 yes Deb, the Blew Dogs need to die, politically

  26. Deb says:

#8 – so sorry to hear about that happening. Awful…

  27. gabby hayes says:

I find my maleness enhanced as a result of the stephanie miller show

  28. Skyhawk says:

    Think fast Jim!

  29. gabby hayes says:

    is jim drinking again?

  30. what’s all this about Stephanie Miller having some kind of zoo or
menagerie? Apparently she’s got a Beaver, a monkey [possibly
shaved], some kind of cat that’s always wet, a donkey who’s
Spectacular in some way, a pony, two giant dogs…

Jim Ward has a horse who died in some sort of horrible
accident: he was hung… or anyways Steph was saying something
    about that, I dunno… [skates]

  31. SueC says:

Bill Moyers spoke very eloquently on health care reform at the end of his show last week–”health care should be seen as a condition, not a commodity”. I don’t know how to link the video here…check it out on huffpo or youtube!

  32. flombaye says:

9: oh, you wanted that back ? – my blonde. – it’s this darn metal-detector i ordered from the back of the comic book. addictive. i prolly wooda falled for the “charles atlas” thing instead, but i seen that “rocky horror last picture show” starring marlo brandon and those things can lead to trouble. besides, it didnt seem really aimed at 410 pound weaklings.

  33. shāf says:

Jim said “titular”! *snicker, snicker*

  34. gabby hayes says:

baccus–one evil laugh shy of a supervillain.

  35. carein2205 says:

    yay again Jim

  36. gabby hayes says:

    not a zoo. a menagerie a trois.

  37. Deb says:

I know Stephanie…I just spent a week with my right wing relatives. We decided not to discuss politics or religion…

  38. SueC says:

I plan a trip to UT next year–to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, where I eventually would love to retire (and work)!

  39. gabby hayes says:

when it comes to my health, I want all the hard decisions to be made by a faceless, nameless bureaucrat in a big building in a distant city whose bonus depends on turning down any treatment I should receive.

  40. Deb says:

#31 – most so called “dumb blondes” are really just dumb brunetts with bad dye jobs :-)

  41. flombaye says:

15: amen to that, absolutely. lest i neglect to say so. kaczynski had a point: keep advanced technology separated from those without judgement or impulse control. – very sad that a woman is dead because of somebody’s intensity of limbic reaction.

  42. Deb says:

#38 – yes, it looks amazing. Could be very hot living there though but what a wonderful place!

  43. gabby hayes says:

why isn’t msnbc in basic cable?

  44. my pooer's dad says:

    Excerpts from Obama’s education speech.

“You’ll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free.”

Republican response: See, there’s that damned socialist empathy again.

“JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was rejected twelve times before it was finally published.”

Republican response: Oh, sure he’s supports witchcraft.

  45. gabby hayes says:

why didn’t rowling use witchcraft to get her book published?

  46. 35 Oh Snap! good one Gabbs

    31 back-of-the-commie-back Special Orders o’ yer youth…
those were the days, you could get Anything! X-Ray specs
were the best. Except they ditint work…

  47. SueC says:

#37–yes, better not to discuss politics (and religion) with most of my republican family, who get most of their “news” from fox, I think! Sometimes, tho, it’s soooooo tempting. But, it never goes anywhere other than into emotional chaos and I think, some mini-strokes!

  48. flombaye says:

38: neat how easily you can avoid mixing politics and religion just by avoiding the topics of MLK, hillel, masada, nelson mandela, 9-11, imadinnerjacket, khamenei, bachmann, hitler, “dont ask”, al quaeda, hezbollah, israel, or…. jesus. – family turmoil is often the result of some whacker bringing up jesus, for example, at a christmas or easter family gathering.

  49. Deb says:

#47 – yup. It’s a circular argument that ends up driving me crazy and them unable to or be willing to look at anything like facts.

  50. SueC says:

oh bummer…time to go to work! Gotta go–Have a great Tuesdee, everyone!

  51. flombaye says:

47: they work okay sometimes. right now, i’m using them to look right thru the helmet in your avatar. nice do, mr dobbs.

  52. Deb says:

#43 – I know, very frustrating but I just webstream countdown and rachal’s show. Even better because it’s mostly commercial free and if they do have one, it’s very short inbetween segments from the shows loading.

  53. k to the g says:

Morning all! Welcome back Mama and Mooks! In case anybody missed the Rolling Stone piece:

    http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/09/05-6

  54. carein2205 says:

Uh, I’m not anti American but if they can’t respect the office of this President, then why do they force them to say the Pledge in public schools?

  55. scooter says:

When Senator Sam Brownback was out waving at the crowd at the basketball tournament at out local school, I started to take off my shoe so I could throw it at him. Does that make me a bad person?

  56. shāf says:

Yea, teaching Improv on cruise ships!

  57. Deb says:

#54 – Or as caller Wendy just said, no democratic prez speech then no repug prez speech either. They aren’t just the party of no, but major hypnocrites.

  58. 51 that’s Mr Bob Dobbs to You, Sir. Greatest Aluminum Siding
    Salesman Ev-Er!

    http://www.cracked.com/article_16310_12-comic-book-ads-that-taught-us-be-cynical.html

dig the 7 foot long submarine that fired real torpedoes…

  59. my pooer's dad says:

55: No, it makes you an Iraqi.

  60. flombaye says:

54: definitely a good essay, and taibbi is no slouch at keeping up with the news. consistently a good researcher…. except this atrocity early on in the piece is pretty jarring: “….What our government is good at is something else entirely: effecting the appearance of action….” – - – to that claim, i would have to direct matt taibbi to michael gorman’s link in post 1. – other than that, a keeper.

  61. Deb says:

Yes, repugs stay home, stay out of school. Fall even further behind and deeper into your pit of right wing sewage.

  62. Deb says:

Yeah, we have a few black pilots too…they’ve made captain! Shocking!!

  63. flombaye says:

56: no. that does not make you a bad person; it’s just a symptom. the causality of your badness is more likely something like the morning readings from your autographed copy of “mein kampf”, or the nites of disco debauchery with jim ward.

  64. Spiffy says:

    Hi all,

Hello Steph and Mooks and regular crew! We missed ya! Hal should have his own weekend show like Frangela.

#8—Wow Mark, so sorry to hear about your neighbor! That must have been frightening.

  65. part o’some demented exchange re: Canada with a Canadian who
can tell you Like It Is:
Doesn’t Canada have totally nude French-Canadian table
dancers plus 5% alcohol beer and legal prostitution and free
    weed and 222s?

Why yes, Mark, it does! And what’s more, it (along with
health care and prescriptions for seniors) is all payed for
    by social programs!!
Yes, and the ironic part is that all of these “First
World Developments” were started by *your* Vietnam draft
    dodgers!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! PWNED!

    Isn’t Canada cute?
Anything is cute in a red and white jump suit… even Santa Claus!

Does Canada get to go outside all by itself?
rp/ Occasionally… but only under strict supervision, tethered
to the front porch, and it has to be back inside when the
street lights come on. In the winter that means about 46
    minutes a day.

  66. carein2205 says:

8 wow Mark! I was in Lathrup Village On Sat. Very pretty area. Sorry for your loss

  67. scooter says:

Enough with lines in the sand. It’s time to etch some healthcare crap onto stones. Write up some bills. Vote on ‘em. If they fail that will force the Repugs to run for re-election on their record of having blocked reform.

  68. Deb says:

    Time for Harry to go….

  69. 64 thanks Spiff, it’s very bad. I just wish she shot that
bastard right between the eyes. He ran past my bedroom
window just as I looked out, it seemed like I could have
touched him. I recognized him, saw him grilling and trimming
    the hedges the day before…

  70. flombaye says:

59: yep, those ads are deceptive for sure. the giveaway is the oe that says “KRYPTONITE ROCKS”. – i have a bunch of it. it’s okay. i wouldnt go as far as saying it rocks.

  71. tooter says:

The people here in Texas have more to worry about than what Obama would say to their kids in school. They need to be worried about the new Rick Perry appointed Director of the State Board of Education who is in charge of the content of the kids’ textbooks!!!! Now that is indoctrination!! They are already trying to re-write history.

  72. pjkool says:

I am against a trigger because it is another break for insurance companies to use the time to hand money to the Republicans so they can take over congress and abolish any change. The American people are being duped by corporate politicians on both sides!

  73. flombaye says:

the repugs have never been against covering the uninsured. that’s what the 6 feet of dirt is for.

  74. 67 Hi Carein
next time stop in we’ll hang out

it’s such a nice, quiet neighborhood, today it seems different, scary

  75. Spiffy says:

#15—I think that’s what freaks some parents out about Obama’s message: he is suggesting they think.

Others just don’t want their kids to know we have a black President.

  76. Deb says:

Hey Jim – I used to work in a movie theatre too (in the days when they had one movie playing). Sold tickets though in the box office and had to make the p.a.’s for each show. Never did work behind the snack counter. I can not eat hotdogs though…haven’t for over 35 years!

  77. Obamarules says:

Reform without Public option is the WORST.

Universal coverage will give private insurance companies millions more customers so they can make trillions more in profits to use to buy mor politicians to stop any other reforms.

Pass the Medicare for All Act! 2 pages to lower the age, anyone who wants it can buy in and the competition it creates will force private companies to reform.

  78. gski says:

NO!! Triggers suck! Read this thing: http://law.wlu.edu/deptimages/Faculty/Jost%20
    Trigger%20Unhappy.pdf (It’s short ;})

  79. Spiffy says:

#76—It’s a lovely neighborhood. I was feeling tree envy while I watched the video.

  80. flombaye says:

71: grilled hedges ARE yummy, but there was probably a psychoactive component.

  81. Obamarules says:

I think those parents are afraid their kids will like Obama more than them and actually START thinking for themselves.

  82. Spiffy says:

80—I say no to triggers too. Did we need a trigger for Medicare? Only those seniors who aren’t working at 62 or who don’t have private insurance need apply?

  83. 71 Lex Luthor sez it Wrocks… as Superman Deterent

back to Stephie’s Zoo, somebody tell her to get a
towel and dry off that poor feline, it can’t stay
wet All the time, gonna catch cold. Just like that
    poor monkey she keeps shaving.

  84. k to the g says:

So we’re supposed to be talking about Obama the school-terrorist all day today. Don’t forget.

  85. 82 it’s possible he stayed up all night before killing his girlfriend.
who gets up at 9 am to shoot someone? if you’re up at 9 you’ve been
up all night… at least they took down the yellow tape

  86. 79 — Somehow reading your post I was reminded of Michigan J. Frog. I think if the universal health coverage doesn’t pass this time, it could go back into the keystone of our metaphorical building and when it comes out again at the beginning of the next left-leaning administration, it will sing “hello my baby” yet again.

And frustrate another generation of dreamers.

  87. Spiffy says:

#30—Yup. Hartman says the same thing—it’s not a commodity.

  88. shāf says:

#73 The metrics for engaging the trigger would likely be so vague (intentionally) that there would also be no clear threshold for invoking it.

  89. Deb says:

Parents should not underestimate their children…hope there’s a huge backlash.

    Good job Lavendar!

  90. Spiffy says:

#86—we should think of things we wished he’d added to the speech.

Kids, don’t bring gum or a gun to school.

  91. Stephanie Miller won’t you come out tonight come out tonight
    come out tonight
I danced with Stephanie Miller with a hole in her stockin’,
And her heel kept a-knockin’, and her toes kept a-rockin’
I danced with Stephanie Miller with a hole in her stockin’
And we danced by the light of the moon.

    whee!

  92. flombaye says:

88: “killin people in the morning ? that aint right !!” – chris rock.
    chris rocks.

  93. tmaxPA says:

    Stephanie, my luff:

I happen to be listening to the ktlk1150 stream because I couldn’t wait for my podcast (only 4.95 a month if you buy a year in advance *gling*) now that you’re back. Started listening just before the last break.

I cannot believe you people are still buying into this doom-and-gloom prognosis that the mainstream media keeps feeding you. You think the AP wasn’t going to print a headline “Harry Reid Ready to Compromise” the day Congress gets back, regardless of what the Majority Leader actually said? Do you honestly think whether the Corporate Press prints a story about Harry Reid is based on what he said? No, for the billionth time….

    NO, Stephania, NOOOOOOOO!!!!

You guys are supposed to be a little more savvy than the random liberal jerk on the street. The entire ‘debate’ on this or any other subject in the “public sphere” is directly controlled by personally interested rich powerful white men. They aren’t conspiring; they just all happen to be in agreement that preventing any progress in our society is best. For them.

Stop paying attention to what the media says about the debate and start paying attention to what is true. Like the fact that regardless of floods of misinformation of Noachian proportions, the vast majority of citizens in this country understand the public option, know why they want it, and are entirely uninterested in what anyone but President Obama has to say on the subject.

  94. PJ Squeezy Louise Hussein McFlavin says:

    Good morning bloggoes!

Congrats to Jim! Was it just me or did Jim say “my wife Jazz” when he was talking about getting his Emmy? I didn’t get much sleep either.

  95. k to the g says:

My Obama dream is that he says Single Payer or nothing.

  96. Deb says:

Oh if only the prez would really go after them…please!!

  97. flombaye says:

90: too bad hartmann’s conversations could not continue.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1CUwDtkM8M

  98. Spiffyhussein says:

Hey! The President stole that question from me! That’s what I asked the RWers at the town hall I attended.

    What’s your plan?

They say tort reform and health savings accounts will save America.

  99. 101 — they forgot to mention that they plan to offer saltines.

  100. Obamarules says:

The Righties were all upset about the letter to ‘help the President’, words that GHWB used almost exactly, BTW.

I guess righties know their kids are too stupid to write a letter that includes conservative blather to try and indoctrinate the President.

  101. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

    Mornin’!

The rethugs plan is to pray and depend on God. I think that’s part of their problem in the back of their mind’s they think that medicine interferes with God’s plan to kill you.

  102. shāf says:

I could have asked for a pony? Damn!

  103. PJ Squeezy Louise Hussein McFlavin says:

A pony? We could have had a PONY!?

  104. if you and a friend are in the woods and you come upon
a bear, you should never try to outrun the bear. Not even
the fastest Olympic athlete could run faster than a bear.
No, the most important thing is that you outrun your friend

  105. Spiffyhussein says:

103—-Yes, George Sr. used that exact phrase when he spoke to the kids a long time ago.

Still, the Pres. and his aides were wrong to add that to the lesson plan.

  111. Obamarules says:

Imagine if Palin had been in and gotten crap everyday from the media like Obama has.

Maybe we should compromise and everyone can get a puppy instead?

  115. Tony says:

Morning, all. Where has summer gone? It rained yesterday and it looks like it’s going to be cool and rainy today. Damn it!

Hope everyone had a good Labor Day weekend. Oh yeah, I wonder if the right wing nuts who tell us that unions are bad, m’kay went to the office yesterday. After all, if you hate unions, you shouldn’t reap the rewards of their efforts.

  118. Spiffyhussein says:

114—she would do what Bush did: shut himself in the White House and never see anyone again. Keep the TV tuned to Faux News and ban newspapers from the White House.

It’s really easy to ignore the people. Politicians have done it for centuries.

  119. k to the g says:

  121. 118 — and here, yet again, is US pigheadedness. Everybody *else* celebrates labor day on May 1st, right? But then, that’s Communism. We can’t have our workers feeling brotherhood and solidarity with other workers throughout the world. That would be very, very bad.

  122. Spiffyhussein says:

120—-Kids like to help but when you are asking kids to help you with YOUR goals and you are the adult in power and a politician, that does reek of recruitment.

If you are the teacher and you ask the kids to help you with the classes’ goals, that’s different, because the class is a community and for the year, it is a community to which they belong (whether they like it or not).

  148. 145 — which is included in the book! I just finished it this weekend. I have been on a weird post-apocalyptic kick lately, and this book just hit me in a certain way. It’s set in Los Angeles, and is essentially about the world slowly going to sh**. The climate changes, so water becomes more expensive than gasoline, the economy goes to hell, there’s all these new drugs, people are killed so often it’s completely unremarkable to find bodies lying in the streets. Then, nightmare of nightmares, in that situation the country elects a Republican president.

That’s when things really go to hell.

  149. Obamarules says:

#125 Like I said, righty kids are too stupid to spew some conservative BS in their letter to use to try and indoctrinate the President.

It is sooooo NOT recruitment to get people to THINK!

HA! The movie theatre I worked at was showing the exorcist…

  151. Spiffyhussein says:

    #132—I just looked up that book. Here’s a quote;

“Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought
To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists that control the fool
To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen
To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies
To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.”

  156. I find these credit counseling services mentioning Obama and the bailouts and “Obama wants moms to go back to school” online ads to be in incredibly poor taste, and very deceptive.

  157. gabby hayes says:

this happened after the roman empire died–infrastructure showed the loss first and most of all–mainly bridges and roads. poeple compensated with ferries. some great landowners took good care of the roads where they crossed their properties and charged a toll. 158. gabby hayes says:

  160. 161 — yeah, I got a pile of stuff to read and I’m about to start school again. But I was knocked out by it. Nicely written, and pretty unique. Agreed. If Obama caves on the Public Option, the GOP will us the same tactics (astro-turfing, nut-jobs at town halls) to kill Immigration Reform and any other initiative.

  181. Deb says:

It’s heartbreaking to think how evolved, how advanced we could be as a country in terms of green energy, education, science and so many other areas if not for the neanderthanl mentality of so many folks, not to mention the iron grip so many corporations have on our government.

  182. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

I think I have the RW mind figured out. Suffering is necessary for God’s plan, so liberals are wrong to try to alleviate suffering. God could eliminate suffering, but he chooses not to, therefore it must be an important part of his plan. Otherwise we would have to conclude that he is an evil God. We have to believe that God is good, so his plan is good, since suffering is part of the plan, then suffering must be good. If God wants you to have health care, you will get it. If the government gives everyone health care it is taking that power from God.

  186. Tony says:

I think the right wing nut jobs are going to destroy this country. They are so anti-science. Science and technology is the only way to create high paying jobs in new industries.

We lost, for example, lots of jobs in the steel industry in the 1970s and 1980s. But those jobs were replaced by jobs in the software, computing, internet, and cellular telecom fields. As a result, we had 22 million jobs created in the 1990s.

So what’s out there now in order to replace the jobs we’re losing now? Nothing. Why? Because we’ve cut back funding of basic research.

We can fund another Bell Labs for less than the profits we generated form the TARP. I blogged about it if you want to take a look.

  187. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

    >“Fart proudly.” – Ben Franklin

  188. shāf says:

  189. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

  195. Obamarules says:

Medicare covers 80% then seniors usually have a secondary to cover the remaining 20%.

  196. Here’s my latest concern about universal health care — everybody says the VA is great, right? That wasn’t what they were sayin’ a couple of years ago. That is the same VA, right, the one that had the wards with the mildewy walls and all the long term convalescents with all the extra health difficulties brought on by where they had to convalesce at.

“Well, that’s because the Republicans screwed things up” you say? Well, when the Republicans, some version of them, somehow, get back in power, and start gutting the program, where will that leave all the people with the single payer plan?

I’m pretty much 100% in the single-payer camp, but this is something that’s nettling to me.

  197. Deb says:

#205 – Right. The 20% is a supplemental. Makes me wonder, does caller know that medicare is a government run program??

  198. shāf says:

#206 Good point, madduane. We can all remember when FEMA was considered an effective crisis management/response organization.

  203. Deb says:

#213 – The biography channel is featuring the making of Animal House this week.

  204. Wow, Boston didn’t make the list but Providence did. fancy that.

  205. Tony says:

206…except it wasn’t the VA. Walter Reed is run by the Army, and it’s scheduled to be closed and demolished in a couple of years. That’s why they let it get that way. Why would you want to spend lots of money to renovate a place that you’re going to demolish in a few years?

  206. Tony says:

Besides, the better analogy is medicare. People who have it don’t want to give it up. All those people railing against socialism in McCaskill’s town hall meeting didn’t put their hands up when they were asked if they wanted to give up their medicare.

  207. 216 — I think if I were having people with serious medical problems live somewhere long term, I might want to make sure it’s a clean & safe place for them to be. Unless, of course I cared more about $$$ than people.

  213. pjkool says:

The President’s speech yesterday fell flat with me. The President needs to forget about speeches and start keeping a political baseball bat under his desk and not be afraid to show it to people like the gang of six. The gang of six isn’t afraid the president will ruin their careers if they don’t vote his way (whatever way that is). He is not bully enough to use the bully pulpit. 219. Tony says:

216…they weren’t living there long term, they were going to be transferred fairly quickly. Yes, it was bad to have mold in there. But it’s not as bad as people made it out to be. It was wrong, and it was a problem.

And you better believe that money does count. The Army has limited resources. Every dollar spent on renovating a facility scheduled to be torn down soon is a dollar that can’t be spent for body armor for soldiers or for bomb resistant vehicles.

Which is more important to you?

  220. Amy Outside of DC says:

I bet his teacher watches Fox News. So her child’s teacher is just trying to protect him from Socialist indoctriniation.

  221. Skyhawk says:

Wow in my day, I had to watch and write a report on the President’s speech for my civics class.

  222. Obamarules says:

One big problem with the VA under Bush was that they did not budget for all the returning wounded soldiers.

They are unbelievable great at saving soldiers lives in the field. I guess that’s why lots of REpubliTARDS go to government run hospitals in Bethesda to have their surgeries.

  223. PJ Squeezy Louise Hussein McFlavin says:

So Michael and the wife weren’t necessarily “home alone” when that child was conceived?

  224. Deb says:

Reminds me of Steve Martins flydini routine!

  225. shāf says:

    So, there were strings attached!

  226. Obamarules says:

In February 2003, McConnell actually went to one of those government-run institutions ( where treatment is, apparently, “either delayed or denied” ) for a procedure of his own. The Kentucky Republican traveled to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, to have an elective coronary artery bypass surgery after it had been revealed that he had arterial blockages.

  227. PJ Squeezy Louise Hussein McFlavin says:

Kids, don’t play with strange puppets – there are always strings attached.

  228. Tony says:

234…again, it’s important to distinguish between the VA and the Department of Defense. The VA is a separate entity. It was not fully funded during the Bush administration, but it managed to provide high levels of service anyway.

Navy Medical is right down the street from me. They’ve got good doctors, but they are not part of the VA.

  229. 230 — Cures are generally more expensive than preventative measures. That said, I would love it if people injured in the service of our country were treated with respect & given the care they need. I think it’s interesting that we spend 60% of the money spent on defense in the entire world and we still can’t take care of our people.

Maybe the answer would be to eliminate waste and consider wiser spending of our resources?

But regardless of these digressions and excuses, there’s a really famous example of government health care not working, from only two years ago. I think we need to look at that…

  230. Tony says:

Did someone say string penis puppet?

  231. Tony says:

241 — you said that the VA was responsible, and it was not. Now, if you want to look at government health care, that’s fine. But let’s not blame the VA for something that it wasn’t responsible for.

Medicare is the better analogy anyway. People who have it like it. So those who say the government can’t do health care right need to explain why people with medicare want to keep it.

  232. Tony says:

And maintaining facilities is not the same as providing medical services. Doctors don’t replace drywall =)

  233. 244 — but administrators allocate funds for each.

  234. Tony says:

  241. Software Diplomat says:

So I was on facebook, and took a poll which asked people if the opposition should be allowed to speak after Obama speaks to the students.

Should President Obama be allowed to address the nation’s school children without a response from the opposition?
    Yes 20,705 (38.0%)
    No 31,413 (57.7%)
    I don’t care 2,306 (4.2%)

And of course, my answer was, “The opposition? Who? Drop outs and slackers?”

I then asked one of the people who said crap about Obama is she was serious! I spent two days explaining that we are not brainwashed, and then explaining our position. Here is her last message to me:

I can not understand why you are trying so hard to “save my soul”. You have your opinions and I have mine. When O and the rest of the politician agree to live with the same health care they are trying so hard to sell us, then, and only then, will I maybe start to believe all the rhetoric.
Sorry I am so late with my response. I do have a life and attended the birthday party for my 4 y.o. twin boys.
So, I’ve expressed my take on O, and I read yours. I do respect what you have to say. Until some things change, I will remain to the far right.

Have a good day all…off to get my hair cut and other chores today!

  248. shāf says:

    #261 Well played, Amy!

  249. flombaye says:

259: send obama a link to the atlas.

  250. Tony says:

80/20 split? Well, if that’s the case, that’s better than a lot of private sector insurance plans.

  251. flombaye says:

259/260: allrightythen. taking names it is.

  252. shāf says:

FYI, Rep. Space is still for the Public Option. He affirmed it in meetings with his constituents last month.

  253. shāf says:

Wasn’t Bill-O asking for charts and a one-page summary of the Health Care reform plan? Simpleton!

  254. flombaye says:

266: thank goodness i invested 14.95 in this giant bowling ball when i ordered the x-ray specs. – - – and by the way, you there ! oooh !! nice hello kitty briefs ! dont worry. i wont tell which blogger you are, sir or madam.

  255. 270 Bill needs both hands a flashlight and an easy to read road map.

  256. 272 with 20 minutes… Kan we make it to Sparta?

  257. Tony says:

Faux News is as credible as Tila Nguyen (Tequilla). Saying that Obama is a socialist is as credible as saying an NFL football player choked you and threw you to the ground but there are no bruises on you and you’re hammered when the cops show up?

  258. shāf says:

#272 Obama needs to create a board game (like Chutes and Ladders) to describe Health Care delivery to the likes of Bill-O.

  259. Amy Outside of DC says:

#268 You have to think like a conservative. Finishing out your term is quitting, 51% isn’t a majority. Just ignore reality and it will all make sense.

  260. PJ Squeezy Louise Hussein McFlavin says:

#258: Was 9-11 really the last time a president spoke to schoolkids?

  261. shāf says:

Twelve minutes, kids. We can achieve true Sparta-ness!

  262. flombaye says:

270: thank you for the link.
“…I know that sometimes, you get the sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work …”
no person on earth could object to such a direct salute to dubya.

I would love to have a communist inglorious basterd in the family.

  264. kemal says:

II can not believe how stupid a large percentage of the American population has become. this country may now be the most powerful country in the world. But quite frankly with the stupidity exhibited by the people that will not last.

If they strip off the public option call all of your Congresscritters and demand that the anti trust exemption be stripped from the insurance industry and that these big companies be busted up!

  268. flombaye says:

283: real alliances are not very geographically contiguous – nor even necessarily contemporaneous. – this is why the meek (best translation: educable) are constantly inheriting the earth.

  269. carein2205 says:

    is it almost soup?

  270. Tony says:

278…if that is the case, we shouldn’t have the President speak to school kids. After all, if speaking to school kids causes terrorist attacks, we shouldn’t let it happen.

  271. carein2205 says:

    he looks like a snail

  272. shāf says:

    Doe Jindal ride an Exorcycle?

  273. flombaye says:

285: especially the animal house wardrobe.

  274. Tony says:

Did his girlfriend’s head spin around and then spew green colored vomit on Jindal?

  275. Tony says:

Does the cost of Palin’s resignation include the cost of her wardrobe spending and plastic surgery that’s soon coming? I see botox in her future, don’t you?

  276. carein2205 says:

my goodness, y’all making me sick with these righties today!

  277. flombaye says:

  281. shāf says:

    It’s Sparta Time!

  282. Tony says:

286…susan, I believe that too big to fail means too big period. Noriel Roubini, who has been right about the banks all along, said that consolidation in the banking sector caused the financial crisis to be worse.

  283. Skyhawk says:

Madduane Queen Sparta for a day!

  284. carein2205 says:

  289. Software Diplomat says:

Here was another discussion between me and a right winger.

Q: How many commercial planes were in the air at the time? And where was the nearest base with fighter jets? How long would it have taken for them to get there? Less time than it took for the second plane to hit the second tower or the third plane to hit the Pentagon or maybe even the FOURTH plane that crashed in PA?

A: All we had to do was go after the planes that turned their transponders off, which is standard operating procedure for NORAD. The nearest base to Washington DC, PA or New York City? I am going to go with Andrews, in Maryland. Washington DC is 12 miles away. York Pa is 90 miles, which at 1785 mph is about 181 seconds. New York City is 77 miles from McGuire, which means it is actually LESS than 3 minutes away in an X-15. So yes, they could easily get there if they had been ordered to do so. They were not ordered to do so. Why?

  290. Tony says:

    okay, folks, later, skaters.

  291. wow, just under the wire.

    Hasta manana, bananas!

Don’t you ever change a thing!

  292. shāf says:

    Have a great day, everyone!

  293. DJ Overnight Express says:

#268 You are correct as long as one of the republicans doesn’t raise his hand and say “fillabuster” like they do on every bill since being banished to minority status. I say since the Democrats are in the majority they control the rules committy, let’s make the republicans do a fillabuster old school! Wouldn’t you just love to see Judd Gregg reading the New York city phone book into the congressioal record. And the press would cover it so the whole country would see who is blocking health care reform and any other bill.
