palloneRep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) calls in at 8:30am Pacific to talk about health care reform.

• House Dem leaders conceded yesterday that concerns raised by fiscally Conservative Blue Dog Democrats will prevent the chamber from voting on a health care reform bill before the August recess begins at the end of the week.

• A senior administration official said Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge, MA Police Department will be visiting the White House on Thursday. The meeting among the three men will take place at 6pm.

So the post grenade I lobbed in killed the liveblog, eh?

#1 Mornin’, trojanrabbit! And good morning to the rest o’ the gang!

I agree, can we put out needed attention back on the important issues? And yes, ProducerChris’ concerns about the Blue Dogs (in both the House and Senate) slowing down the health insurance debate an prevent passage before the August recess where on-target. So, bully for Chris!

This is what really scares me…

Senate Finance Committee Dropping Dem Health Goals: AP
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/27/senate-group-dropping-dem_n_245839.html

    Excerpt:

WASHINGTON — After weeks of secretive talks, a bipartisan group in the Senate edged closer Monday to a health care compromise that omits two key Democratic priorities but incorporates provisions to slow the explosive rise in medical costs, officials said.

These officials said participants were on track to exclude a requirement many congressional Democrats seek for large businesses to offer coverage to their workers. Nor would there be a provision for a government insurance option, despite President Barack Obama’s support for such a plan.

The three Democrats and three Republicans from the Senate Finance Committee were considering a tax of as much as 35 percent on very high-cost insurance policies, part of an attempt to rein in rapid escalation of costs. Also likely to be included in any deal was creation of a commission charged with slowing the growth of Medicare through recommendations that would take effect automatically unless overturned by Congress.

WTF?! No public option (which at best, is a stepping-stone to Single Payer)? No requirement for business to offer coverage to employees? You might as well not do anything, than to call this a reform bill. Grrrrr!

    Good morning shaf.

Hence my first comment this morning. Why do anything. If this comes across Obama’s desk he needs to wad it up and toss it in the circular file.

  5. trojanrabbit says:

And let me guess what their idea of slowing cost rise is?

Limiting the amount malpractice insurance can pay out (under the insane belief that the premiums would go down).

  6. Mornin TR and Shaf! TR- I AGREE!!! I love Steph and the Mooks, but I think my head is going to explode if I hear anymore about it… I even wrote a blog on that subject yesterday titled “Why the hell do we need 14 million google hits on the Gates arrest????”

  7. LOL… did you guys just hear the Consumer Reports piece on Box Wine???? It was a hilariously appropriate ad for this show!

  8. WOW- just had the perfect example of why we need national healthcare! I’ve been waiting on claim reimbursement from AFLAC to pay some overdue hospital bills and I just (like 2 seconds ago) get an email stating my insurance rep is unavailable until August 6 becuase she’s on vacation… must be nice… and apparently only she can help our group… I wonder if she would have to wait on her salary if I felt like leaving town for a couple weeks…

  9. and she left 7/27- I get the email today- thanks lady for letting me know in advance so I could check the status of my claim…

and so it was just a matter of time… indeed, i do realize that for many of you, i’m about seven or ayte years late discovering some things that had already gone viral on the youtubes… please allow that for some of us, these discoveries are still new. for monetary considerations (for those of you who forgot to check the headlines, a major recession started in 1978), some of us are just now ramping up to interweb access. and so, for those not already in the slipstream of automated memeware, here’s a new development apropos the prior listed link, TWO HOT GUYS IN THE SHOWER. you can be phobic some other time. just watch it. it’s funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mA5ACAFApA
now, freshly equipped with this cultural background staple, i paid a visit to rick santorum, who is famously obsessed with a desire to marry a dog. i explained in detail the potential advantages of setting up a series on the youtubes called “RICK SANTORUM AND ONE HOT DOG IN THE SHOWER”, but we are presently stalled in the production stage, while rick determines who would be the best sponsor. that wienermobile crash may have come at a particularly bad time.

  11. Carol Hussein in Central Mass says:

#8, Danielle, that is so outrageous and such a perfect IN PRESENTY TIME reason the blue-dogs are so, ah, wrong.

Hey, you slackers in the Congress, is your insurance-pharm paycheck so important that you will vote against America?

  12. Carol Hussein in Central Mass says:

    and good morning, Danielle.
    Hi shaf and tj, flom.

  13. Carol Hussein in Central Mass says:

I propose that Barack, Skip and the Sarg lift their glasses and announce they agree on a public option for health care insurance coverage NOW!

  14. flombaye says:

4:wadding up the useless papers and tossing them would be loudly announced by hannity (with uber-hip 1973 burn-out rock blaring to impress the young whippersnappers), as playing basketball while rome has fallen and it cant get up.

  15. Rusty says:

What unites the republican party is money! There are greedy democrats though they’re called blue dogs. Lets face it if money and the corporations are running our country we are living under FACISM!! The only solution is to pass legislation to take corporations rights before the law to have the same rites as persons. The people pay these clowns salaries and they work for us because we elected them to do OUR bidding. If we want healthcare they have to honor our wishes. and be the voice of the people in this matter!! WE THE PEOPLE!! MUST DEMAND NOTHING LESS!!

  16. Carol Hussein in Central Mass says:

#3,shaf, Those headlines over at HuffPo are tough on my digestion. This whole debate is so nerve-wracking. We’re getting close and I believe Barack has contingency plans (not related to Waterloo), but how frustrating are these non-leaders?!?

  17. Carol Hussein in Central Mass says:

I went to DD this am and heard 3 minutes of Imas. He was saying he would like Hannity to run for President.
He reported the Hawaiian official saying indeed Barack was born in their state and is a natural born citizen and his sidekick said Hawaii wasn’t a state. urg!

oh, and, I bought a box o’ joe for everyone. It’s near the fainting couch.

  18. Carol Hussein in Central Mass says:

    #15, Rusty,
    RIGHT ON!!

  19. flombaye says:

8: strange but true: richard pryor had gone thru a deep and focused phase of self-destruction thru smoking crack, which had even his dealer(s) cringing and backing off. – richard spoke in public about that era, saying memorably something like “now, crack dealers are not by and large the most humanitarian people…”. but this was so severe, that they really did withdraw because richard would not. – and there was that time around 1980, that some credit cards started charging rates that left sicilian loan sharks just shaking their heads in disgust. – and that reminds me, whatever happened with the rumors that the 9-11 attacks had such a dramatic impact that allstate was considering actually honoring some claims ? – did anything ever come of that ? — and so, that trend in mind, i’m sorry to hear that you were tricked into using aflac. they really are a waste of space.

  21. Good morning, BloggenMooksters! I hope you are all doing well.

I’m hoping for a show today without any discussions of Professor Gates’ ordeal.

And I really am sick and tired of our Democratic Party being such a wimpy crew. And I knew but saw it confirmed that the insurance and pharma industries (along with the oil companies, financial industry, and a dozen other large international concerns) OWN the Dems as well as the Republicans.

It’s disgusting. I had to turn off MSNBC this morning, Morning Joke, hearing Mitch McChinless started to turn my stomach. You see, the stimulus simply didn’t work! Never mind that only 10% of it has actually be spent so far.. And Mitch said the +$700 billion bank bailout had worked JUST FINE. Damn what a miserable Republican turd the man is.

Hell is going to be full of Republicans.

  22. I watched the new Yes Men movie last night, which confirms my contention that pure greed is the only driving force in the world that apparently matters.

  23. shāf says:

#21 I hate to sound like some of the Libertards that call the show, but at times like these, I really don’t see much difference between the Dems and the Rethugs. Both are awash in corporate campaign dollars and seem more than willing to ignore the people they were sent to Washington to serve.

  24. flombaye says:

21: but all dogs go to heaven. clearly, they know better than to go where they’ll get dog turds all over their “bruno ugly” shoes (that they would never own).

  30. Danielle, I reach on your experience with the insurance company. We went through this “she’s on vacation and no one else can handle your case” crap with my mother when she was dying of cancer. At one point, I left her a message, “I sure hope you don’t die, Lady. No one else can handle my mother’s file.” Ultimately, I complained to the state insurance commission about it – another Pissing In the Wind experience..

I try to remind myself that they’re not all bad on both sides of the aisle. But watching the debate about health care just reminds me that most of them are. But not enough people are willing to vote for third party and independent candidates to change things, yet.

  42. Skyhawk says:

Morning peeps! Agreed LC I say we get a Sgt. of Breaking Arms to smack down some blue dogs.

  43. LeftCenter says:

    Blue dogs make it complicated.

  44. Congress should have its insurance coverage deleted and replaced with what they come up with for the American People. These people are the biggest hypocrites on the planet. They’ve got theirs, screw the rest of the country.

Pissing Upwind, maybe. As opposed to downwind, which you can do in a large two-door GM car from the 1960s, at 70 MPH on a Texas highway. Open the door partially and a vortex is created which just whisks everything out. Ask me how I know that. (Not for the ladies, obviously.)

  45. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

Health care reform is starting to sound more like a boondoggle.

  46. Dar313 says:

I AM SO MAD! WTF!! Single payer, NOW!!

  47. shāf says:

I’m not buying it, Rep. Kind!

  48. LeftCenter says:

So Rep. Kind, DO you favor a public option?

  49. flombaye says:

43: especially after rick santorum blew dogs in the shower.

  50. LeftCenter says:

    Thanks for your answer? LOL

  51. Dar313 says:

F-ing double-talking Democrats, I’m thinking of leaving this party.

  52. Rusty says:

  53. Skyhawk says:

44 – Congress should have its insurance coverage deleted and replaced with what they come up with for the American People.

Amen to that, however, absolutely nothing would get done if that were the case. They don’t want theirs watered down, even though it’s what we’ll eventually get.

  54. shāf says:

#45 Yep. Just another hand of Three Card Monte!

  55. flombaye says:

51: let me guess… you dun brung yer own lampshade ?

  56. LeftCenter says:

#51 Not all of them are are double talking. Mostly blue dogs are.

  57. Dar313 says:

What the hell is he talking about?

  58. flombaye says:

54: where are these other two cards you speak of ?

  59. LeftCenter says:

I really don’t care what Republicans want. I care about the blue dogs screwing it up and giving us essentially NOTHING!

  60. flombaye says:

where was michele block-man hatched ?

  61. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

Looks like health care reform is going down the tubes again.

  62. Dar313 says:

    Public option!!

  63. LeftCenter says:

My senators both favor the public option.

  64. flombaye says:

limbaugh will continue to blame obama for never mentioning how spending three times as much as needed, without commeasurate healthcare output, makes this the greatest healthcare system in the world.

  65. LeftCenter says:

I feel like Marthe Keller in “Bobby Deerfield”: “Do you vant to scream?”

  66. Skyhawk says:

Maybe we can get Michael Vick to whip the blue dogs in shape.

  67. flombaye says:

54: maybe they’ll incorporate stephy’s hair-standing-up reaction, which normally is just a reaction to the full moon, with the three card monte, to establish a full monte.

  68. Tony says:

The problem is that the blue dogs represent their districts…and their district tend to be rural and not very progressive. I’ll bet you a lot of them have spent some time at the C Street house or whatever that place is.

There’s our problem in a nutshell. Unfortunately, while democrats do have a majority, a lot of the people in that majority come from areas that aren’t going to go along with much of the progressive agenda.

  69. LeftCenter says:

#68 Some of them have lived there.

  70. LeftCenter says:

Harry Reid needs to slink away and give his job as majority leader to a Democrat.

  71. Dar313 says:

Leave it to Democrats to F it up!

  72. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

This “compromise” sounds like the “compromise” on the filibuster.

  73. shāf says:

Yes! Medicare Part D (the drug benefit) is a disaster. The legislation did not allow the government to negotiate directly with the drug makers (like they can in the V.A.). What a joke!

  74. flombaye says:

66: amazingly, in an act of this world record breaking cowardice, michael vick has fully dodged any consequences by filing bankruptcy. vick is just not up to the responsibility.

  75. shāf says:

#70 I’ve said for a long time that Reid is a DINO, and he’s proving it once again.

  76. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

    Public option!!

    ———————————————————————
It’s been removed. It will almost impossible to put it back in.

  77. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

#70 I’ve said for a long time that Reid is a DINO, and he’s proving it once again.

    ———————————————————————
As long as the DLC is running the Democratic party this is what we’re going to get.

  78. Morning All…. is it safe? Is the “Gatesgate” blather over with? I really can’t take another day of it.

  79. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

Cafepress has some nice Romney 2012 stuff. He’s a giant jerk. But at least he’s open about it. Unlike Harry Reid, who pretends to represent us.

  80. gabby hussein hayes says:

over the weekend, I saw a documentary on Vlad the Impaler. In order to make his citizens more ready for war (he occupied the land between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Empire) had all the sick, elderly, lame, and otherwise disabled people brought to his castle, where they were killed. So the republican idea of killing the sick and elderly isn’t really a new idea. Hitler did the same thing.

  81. flombaye says:

73: for about the last 30 years, the attempts to monopolize and monetize all medications, have predictably stimulated resurgence of “witchcraft”. hemp is only part of the story. excepting the modern miracles related to sterilized-environment high speed trauma surgery, it gets harder and harder every day to see where the “medical” community fits into the real community. – it really makes more sense for the lot of them to get jobs and pull their fair share, rather than weigh down the working caste with their antiquated bolshevik guilds.

  82. Tony says:

You know, maybe we’re arguing about the wrong thing. Maybe we should be arguing about what Massachusetts is doing. Instead of a fee for service plan, they want to set up an annual payment per patient.

That will cut costs, and make insurance more affordable. If you’re a doctor who knows that he’s going to get x dollars per patient no matter what, then that will likely keep them from sending patients in for test after test.

Get that done, and maybe we don’t need a public option at that point.

  83. LeftCenter says:

Caller: “I don’t belong to an organized political party. I’m a Democrat.”–Will Rogers

  85. Skyhawk says:

When the Dems comeback home during their recess, turn out, fire hard questions and demand reforms. I hope more unemployed citizens show up and state their case.

  86. LeftCenter says:

#84 Yeah, like that’ll make things all better.

  87. 30… what’s even more insulting…

I have an HSA (which is Bush’s shitty idea that not only should I pay a hefty premium every month, but I should also pay 100% of the contracted rate for treatment until I reach my $1500 deductible.) so, when I was going through a lot of health issues a little while back I needed to have multiple MRIs, a spinal tap, many neurological tests, etc… and I couldn’t afford it… SOOOOOO

This same vacationing lady convinced me to go to the ER, because my AFLAC policy should pay me $500 per visit. Thus, with the deductible technically “met” (just not actually paid off to the dr) the ER should have been no cost to me, but additional $ in my pocket.

Instead, I racked up the whole $1500, this same lady then stated she didn’t think AFLAC would pay the claim because it didn’t fall under the exact terms for an ER visit, and the extra (unnecessary) ER visit left me with a $750.00 bill. Then she tried to not even bother submitting my claim to AFLAC..

Well, I work in Insurance (kind of) and I write appeals often, so I was appalled she didn’t even submit the claim. No denial, nothing to appeal. So I had to demand she even submit the claim. Now, right about a month later when she should be giving me the status of the issue, she goes on vacation and notifies my office the day after she left… nice..

I welcome anyone who doesn’t think we need healthcare to trade places with me for a few weeks. Nothing like trying to worry about whether you really need that extra test to prove you have MS, but can’t get it because the insurance company has voted with the DR saying it “COULD” be just stress… and out of pocket it would cost thousands…

Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif, writes to jump on the health care analysis from the Heritage Foundation.
Stark notes that it was written by a subsidiary of UnitedHealthcare, the Lewin Group, and offers his own point-by-point rebuttal.

“The Lewin Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of UnitedHealthcare, released a new study paid for by the ideologically conservative Heritage Foundation that uses several leaps in logic to suggest that a public health insurance option would dominate the health insurance market,” Stark says.

“The Lewin Group had offered earlier analyses funded by other organizations that greatly overstated the likely effect of a public option under health care reform as envisioned in HR 3200. Conclusions in the latest Lewin Group “analysis” continue to be based on faulty assumptions about how the Exchange and the public health insurance option would work, and are counter to the official estimates from Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

More specifically, the Lewin Group is part of Ingenix, a UnitedHealth subsidiary that was accused by the New York attorney general and the American Medical Association of helping insurers shift medical expenses to consumers by distributing skewed data. Ingenix supplied UnitedHealth and other insurers with data that allegedly understated the “reasonable and customary” doctor fees that insurers use to determine how much they will reimburse consumers for out-of-network care.

  119. #111 What?? Have they stopped doing that joke? I guess they were kind of running out of ways to do him in every episode.

  120. LeftCenter says:

#115 I’d like Feingold to run the Sentate, too.

  121. Food Fascist says:

Time for the ultimate option – boycott everyone – that mean Blue Cross AND Blue Cross Democrats alike.

  122. Skyhawk says:

If the rethugs had their way, health care reform would be the lead option. One gun, one bullet to the head. That way the NRA is satisfied.

  123. flombaye says:

116: well, with the constant proliferation of scandals, it’s fair to ask, who’s your leaderhosin ?

  124. Tony says:

Slim seduction? Ashley Madison first, now this?

  125. my pooer's dad says:

Americans are collectively a reactionary people. We are not progessive in terms of solving social, political, or economic problems. We always wait until a catastrophic situation arises before we take any actions to make significant changes. If you look at the history of our country, this is pretty much the case. The last time we saw such changes was during the FDR era, and I don’t see anything now that shows our politicians are inclinded to make any changes now.

  126. 119… you’re soooooooo right… It’s so obvious in the industry that what they were doing was illegal that as soon as I heard that “reasonable and customary” BS line, I would challange it with an appeal stating the hospital’s charges are within reasonable and customary guidelines and thus subject to payment. Every one of these claims got overturned because they knew if they argued there was a greater risk of getting caught…

  127. Ed S. says:

Re: Campaign contribution reform. Let’s accept that each corporation has the same rights as an individual. Then let’s limit each corporation’s political contributions to that of an individual. This would include money spent by lobbyists.

  128. flombaye says:

126: as famously observed after the korean involvement, very good at planning for the last war.

  129. Food Fascist says:

At a lobby day for the Natural Products Association, we were given studies by the Lewin Group that essentially left you believing that if Americans would just take supplements, we would not have a bad a health crisis as we do. For example, they said if everyone got the right amount of calcium, we would save 13-14 billion in broken bones, hips etc. Actually, this corroborates with at least one college text in nutrition, however the same text that makes light of persons worried over their food is organic or not. So when they presented their studies, I had no reason to believe there was anything sinister with the Lewin Group. It is interesting to learn more about them of course as…I am….the Food Fascist – [ and would direct you to dark leafy greens and raw organic milk and then yes, along with Harvard Studies to supplement with calcium if you are a middle aged male OR female.

  130. shāf says:

#126 Agreed. It’s a case of “If not now, when?” for issues like health insurance reform, campaign finance reform, the environment, etc.

The press needs to expose more the the excesses of the past eight-plus years. We need to get Frangry!!!!!

  131. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

Sunday on meet the press Hillary was asked by David Gregory what the difference between this try for healthcare for all is from 1993. She answered; In 1993 30% of people paid for their own insurance and 70% got healthcare through their employer. Now 70% pay for their own healthcare and 30% get it through employment. Good News THE TIDE IS TURNING!! I’m too lazy to type it again but look at at todays entry #15

  136. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

Not voting at all is the worst thing people could do.

  137. shāf says:

#132 The problem is, our political system is biased to the two major parties. So, it’s the case of “which is the least objectional… Dems or Repubs”. At least, there is a notion that we can change the system from the inside with the Dems.

  138. shāf says:

    meant “objectionable”

  139. So if they pass SOMETHING won’t that be better than NOTHING??? Even if it is a watered-down version of what we really need. I never imagined we’d get Universal Health Care overnight. Right? Throw me a bone here.

  140. my pooer's dad says:

129: I wonder if the bird flu will be the catastrophic event that spurs health care reform?

  141. 139… I agree! We don’t need a nation of Kyle’s..

  142. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

Chris’ growl sounds like Barf in “Spaceballs”.

  143. Dar313 says:

I worked for Healthcare Executives, Sr. VP and CEO level. These people only care about PROFITS and their salaries. Trust me, my boss made $500,000 per year, I made $38,000. WTF? They have lobbiest, and corporate plans to defeat everything that get in the way of profit.

Time to switch the theme music for the show again!

  150. That’s great… If you had $81,000.

What about the rest of us?

  151. Dar313 says:

What we need is more personal stories to get out there. The news media is obviously not going to help out on this issue. Any suggestions?

  152. Food Fascist says:

We certainly found a trillion to misdirect our military to the wrong country.

  153. Len says:

I think it is time to switch back to the old theme song. I know I am not walking on sunshine right now and I am not going to take it any more.

  156. 153… I take it that pissed you off just as much as it did me… if I had $81k, maybe I’d have some F**KIN test results by now…

  157. flombaye says:

No, because what they’re leaning towards is compulsory insurance but they’ll still not cover pre-existing condtions. Why should I be forced to buy something that WON’T COVER ME.

  159. Food Fascist says:

Food fascist does same thing this caller does. Alt health as East West accupuncture, herbalism. These are actual people who actually care and study actual food as medicine, on a knowledge base of thousands of years. Western medical students simply tell you what color pill to take. Take your health care premiums and buy good food, herbals and wellness Drs.

    No, we printed that trillion.

  161. 159 — Danielle, I was like Well, good for friggin’ you! 165. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

The insurance companies would love it if you were legally required to buy their crappy products, and the government would pay for those who can’t afford on their own.

  166. 165… I know she meant well with her point. That you have to pay for it yourself if you want good health options, and that it shouldn’t be that way. But there are too many that are in positions like I am. Where I need additional tests and treatment, but I have weigh out whether I’d like to buy groceries this week or if I should have that last MRI… and of course, my doctor will treat me and bill me, but considering I already owe more than I can pay, why would I want to stress myself out with more debt… especially since the only crappy answer I’ve gotten so far is “Maybe it’s just stress”… Yeah, sure dipshit, I’m a 26 year old female with 4 different neurological issues on my left side… the same side I happen to have lesions in my frontal lobes… but sure, it’s just freakin’ stress!!!!!!! WOW I AM SOOOOOO PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  167. flombaye says:

162: because taxation without representation…. WORKS ! no course in economics is complete without a screening of “amistad”.

  168. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

164, we don’t print money anymore, the Fed prints it and we pay them to use our country’s money.

  169. my pooer's dad says:

After 3000 people die from a terrorist attack, we launch into war mode with billions $ being spent on blood lust. Tens of thousands of people die yearly from lack of health care. The flu of 1918 killed over 40 million world wide. If some repug’s kid is in school with a kid from a family without health care when a flu pandemic breaks out again, then I wonder…

  170. flombaye says:

163: the time has come for a major tectonic paradigm correction. the things that WORK for maintenance and restoratio of health ott no more be labeled as “alternative”. you are barking my language.

We think, therefore we vote (Democrat).

  182. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

  183. my pooer's dad says:

Well, what comes out of Palin’s mouth is mostly scat. ;)

  185. Food Fascist says:

  187. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

  188. Shane-O says:

#185 great minds and bloodshot eyes :)

  189. LeftCenter says:

What I’m wondering is if Sarah Palin eats wolves.

  190. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

    I counter your fart.

  191. Yeah…. I’ll “research” this theory for them.

  192. Red wine makes women horny??? Seriously?? They needed research to figure that out??? I’ve been trying to give all my guy friends a head’s up on that one for YEARS!!!

  193. 194 — That there wolfmeat’s got to be pretty gamey. Needs a really strong-flavored sauce.

Let’s consult Ted Nugent’s Kill It and Grill It cookbook…

  194. Mike H says:

Writer is actually pretty on-target… the Gatesgate really is more about blue-collar cop versus Ivory Tower professor. Most people are taking sides based on whether they consider themselves more blue collar or white collar.

  195. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

    Red, Red wine

  196. Was that actually the journal for no sh*t sherlock??

  197. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

I’d like to have Steph as my lab parter during the wine testing.

  198. Tony says:

Wow…I’m watching Bloomberg right now, and Margaret Brennan is doing an interview with Mort Zuckerman. He says that the unemployment numbers are worse than reported, and that things are going to get worse. He said that commercial real estate is the next bomb to go off.

    Not good.

  199. WeNotMe says:

Keep the faith! Now’s the time to double our efforts and call our Congress Weenies. Obama needs to start knocking some heads ala LBJ!
We can still pull The Public Option out of the fire, but we gotta work to make ‘em do it.

  200. Skyhawk says:

Yes I want funding for a study to determine if domestic red wine is more effective than imported red wine for sexual sensitivity.

  201. my pooer's dad says:

192: Wolf meat is supposed to be very tender, especially after you chase it to exhaustion in a helicopter.

  202. Actually red wine just alter perception and vision so guys are more likely to get lucky

  203. Rusty says:

#170 Hey Danielle I really liked the poem you wrote the other day I’m a disabled person who is on SS And medicare part a and b Why don’t you go for disability through social security? You get benefits and you will not have to pay for shitty healthcare plans that only one person can work on your case. Just get a lawyer or you can apply yourself. They will hear your case and you may qualify. Good luck!

  204. 203… I think we all already knew that about the unemployment numbers… with the changes made by Clinton / Bush… but that’s a shame about the commercial realestate… **shaking head**

  205. #197 Alas, red wine tends to make men SLEEPY. Can’t fully explain it, but bourbon works best for me.

  206. 203 — look around your town… Empty office parks? Retail space with a “available for lease” in the window? We’ve been overdeveloping for years…

  207. Shane-O says:

#205 – they also need to add a control group on dog pain-killers

  208. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

When Officer Crowley gets to the White House, he’ll probably ask to see President Obama’s birth certificate.

  209. WeNotMe says:

The bigger fight is when they reconcile the house version (with a public option) with the Senate version (without).
    Keep calling, brethren.

  210. Food Fascist says:

PER Harvey Wasserman: Today, July 28, 2009, Leonard Peltier goes before the Federal Parole Commission in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. As you read this, all over the world, beginning in the wee hours of the morning in the South Pacific, prayer vigils, peace marches, ecumenical gatherings, group chantings and all forms of individual meditation accompany this hearing. It is one of the most important tests of the new Obama Administration.

Peltier was charged more than a third of a century ago with the murder of two FBI agents. The circumstances of the prosecution, and the legal history of the case, involve thousands of pages of missing evidence, compromised witnesses and procedures so twisted as to stagger the imagination and leave any sense of fair play and reasonable jurisprudence buried in the dust. http://www.aimovement.org/

  211. shāf says:

#206 You’d think helicopter-chased wolf wouldn’t be as tasty, since the wolf’s muscles would have gone anaerobic after a while. But, perhaps I over-analyze. ;)

  212. shāf says:

    Yay, swirly music!

  213. Amy outside of DC says:

How much is it red wine making women horny versus red wine making the men look really attractive?

  216. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

In a few minutes I have to get in the car and drive to North Carolina. Not looking forward to it.

  217. #218 Whatever works, Amy.

  218. 208… partly because I don’t yet have a diagnosis… so nothing would get approved through disability… but sometimes you just know… my mother had MS, and I’m going through the EXACT same issues she went through… just can’t get anyone to listen…

also, I literally am 1 week away from a double major degree for bus. mgmt / market and would like to use the education I’ve paid for…

Lastly, and probably the most honestly, I’m scared to get the official “label”…

thanks a lot about the poem… I’ve been trying to update the blog daily but mostly it isn’t poetry… I have a few poems half way completed that will probably be up soon after my graduation..

  219. PJ Squeezy Louise Hussein McFlavin says:

Manson/Spector knocks ‘em dead … it would be a crime not to buy their stuff. I’m just waiting for their album of Johnny Cash prison songs.

  220. my pooer's dad says:

216: You’re right. Too much lactic acid. Yuk!

  221. #218 It’s one of those moot point chicken/egg type arguments …

The mayor’s brother gets a contract to build.

  223. Mike H says:

Commercial real estate should be in trouble — it’s shameful how perfectly good developments were half-empty but people still built brand new office parks and store plazas when everything was in the upswing. All that land cleared for nothing.

I think towns and cities should make it hard to get new permits for new building — and instead make it easier to re-hab old plazas and office/industrial parks.

  224. #224 The birth of the “Barbedwire-Topped Wall of Sound!”

  226. scooter says:

Manson was in prison at the time the Monkees were being formed. He did write one song that was recorded by the Beach Boys. Other than that, his musical resume is pretty short.

  227. 228… I think that’s what went wrong in my area… over construction.. it’s just a shame that virtually everyone I knew in the industry was out of work for a long time… but I can say it’s slowing picking up here as stimulus money is trickling in. We’ve started some highway and public building work that has employed at least a few of my friends…

  228. Liberal Hussein Smurf says:

I’m on my way to NC. Bye, all.

  229. bye smurf… drive safe

  230. Tony says:

Peltier will likely be locked up for a while longer. The crap storm over releasing him would make the dustup over the Gates incident look like a picnic.

  231. Rusty says:

Danielle well if things get too crazy SS might be an option

  232. #78, the irony is, now that the tapes of Gates’ arrest have been released, and the degree to which Crowley has been shown to be lying in his police report, we actually have something to talk about!

Such is the nature of the news cycle.

  233. shāf says:

    Bye Smurf. Safe travels!

  234. 236… I know. My mother used it. I guess it’s just to “real”….

  235. 231 — went and checked, because I was remembeing the Helter Skelter thingie happening in 68 and the Monkees being formed in 65. You’re right, though, he was in from 60 to 67. I don’t think him having a successful music career would have done anything good in the long run. I think, for whatever reason, Manson was just a bad egg.

  236. Food Fascist says:

I will agree with Bill O Reilly in that the right have no basic education on what health care reform is about altogether and we must bear the few hours it would take to put a simple power point together or promote pieces like ‘Sick around the world’ at pbs.org.

Every college student can put one together to educate their class mates, surely our leaders ought to be able to bring those that do not understand the need for health care reform, the basics, and bring them up to speed. And certainly, we should not be allowing disinformation to interfere with what we need and want. In this, it would not be unreasonable to have case studies to reveal. For example, the City of San Franciso’s shot at a universal health care is not working so well and the Massachusetts a disaster [ well thx to Mitt Romney]. Mike Papatonio had some reasonable strategies this past Saturday on Ring of Fire. Start, he says by ferreting out the inefficiencies in the system, as we are doing with mileage standards. Pitifully slow, but until we stop attacking the other side for how stupid they are and become teachers, we will just be hampsters spinning the same wheel.

  237. hullo

wow 241 posts with an hour and a half to go… you bin busy

  238. caller, although my heart goes out to you, this can no longer be an issue because of EMTALA- emergancy medical treatment act of labor act… meaning a hospital cannot delay needed treatment for insurance purposes (in a very small nutshell at least)

  242. QUICK! Get Dick Morris some punctuyation … STAT!!!

  243. 241 Charlie wasn’t a bad egg, he was a government program.
Consider: he spent almost his entire adult life institutionalized.

Manson, the SLA, the Zodiac Killer, the Hillside Strangler… good

State Terror, Strategy of Tension… make the people beg to a Police

  245. hi Maddy, Danielle, evveyboddy… hope you’re all doing well

  246. David in Maine says:

    247: one more right here

  247. Amy outside of DC says:

#250 Not just his adult life. Manson is (in part) a result of years of poorly supervised juvenile detention centers. He might have had less rage and anger if he hadn’t been raped as a boy.

  254. caller Obama is being a wimp?

How about Congress is so corrupt and in the pockets of Big

Thom Hartmann is right: Corporate Personhood is killing us.
Bucky Fuller wrote about the dangers of Corporations ruling.
Hazen S. Pingress, Mayor of Detroit and Governor of Michigan
spoke out against Corporations… in 1888 or so
“Corporations seeking franchises find it necessary to elect
    dishonest men to public office.”

    ’bout said it

  255. Tony says:

You know, just for S&Gs, I did some poking around GE’s jobs website. And they do have jobs, and quite a few good ones. The problem is that for most people, these jobs are out of reach. You cannot take a construction worker who lost his job because housing starts have plunged and put him in an ad sales job that requires 18-24 months of internet ad sales experience.

I may apply for them, because I’ve got what GE wants. But for so many people, it’s tough.

  256. Amy outside of DC says:

Producer Chris, I will agree the live blog is really cool, but it’s not new anymore, is it? Time to record a new commercial.

  257. #262, I think the caller has a point. Obama’s been very late out of the starting gate on using the bully pulpit.

Not to say that everything you wrote isn’t true as well.

  258. 254 — my point was not whether Manson was born bad or created — I’m sure his relationship with his father is where it all began and there are lots of factors that excalated his anger and agressiveness over the years. All I was saying was that by 1967, when he was trying to break into the music business, it was far too late. There’s no way that the music business — I swear to ghob, who could be saved by the music business — was going to mean anything to Charles Manson but another means to his own angry, hateful, poisoned ends.

  259. #264 I thought it was “nude” live blog … and here I sit with no pants …

Donald Defreez was an inmate at Vacaville Prison where the CIA

War on Us by our own elites

  262. Gates/Crowley Is NOT About Racism

With their coverage of the Gates/Crowley incident, the myopic corporate media is fighting the last war, not the next one. In this instance, America’s history of ethnic profiling and Police mistreatment of minorities is not the troubling issue. I do not believe that Sergeant Crowley is a racist or that his treatment of Professor Gates is a product of racism.

This unfortunate event is a symptom of a new affliction permeating Law Enforcement; the impetus for Crowley’s actions was Authoritarian Machismo.

Since 9/11, our law enforcement departments have become more and more authoritarian. In his training, Serpent Crowley learned to regard ever perpetrator, regardless of race color creed or national origin, as a potential enemy of the State. Police officers see themselves as front line foot soldiers in the struggle to protect the Fatherland.

Professor Gates was upset and rightly so. Who wouldn’t be? He is in his own home and confronted as if he were a criminal; even after he proves his identity. Did he shout at Crowley? Yes. Did he accuse Crowley of racism? Probably, but unless he pulled a gun, knife or other weapon and physically threatened Sergeant Crowley, Professor Gates did not break the law.

Even after Crowley notifies dispatch that Gates is the resident, the incident continues. At that time, Crowley should have said: “There has been a misunderstanding and I’m sorry for inconvenience. If you would like to file a report with my supervisors, here is my badge number and contact information”. Crowley should have defused the situation by backing down and leaving. He did not. Why not?

Professor Gates may have said something that insulted Crowley’s manhood and challenged his position. No pumped up alpha male would tuck his tail between his legs and skulk off. Ever fiber of his being, every element of his training, every aspect of his psyche required Sergeant Crowley to confront the threat to his authority.

The bottom line, Sergeant Crowley did what he did because he had too much testosterone coursing through his system.

    And because he could.

  309. Amy outside of DC says:

So many people know about Manson without actually knowing stuff. For example, he wasn’t personally involved in the Tate/Labianca murders, he sent his “family” to do it.
Basically, one of his “family” was in trouble for beating up and nearly killing a guy who owed them money. When one of Manson’s followers was arrested, the idea came up to do a copy cat crime, so the cops would think they had the wrong person in custody. That’s how they ended up at Sharon Tate’s house. The Labianca murders were a follow up. However, they went overboard with the violence and killed a famous actress, so the cops never thought it was linked to the earlier crime.
I think Manson sat in the car, he didn’t actually do the killing.
This is based on a book and interviews with Manson years ago. It was before they found bodies on the ranch where the Manson family lived in the 60s, so maybe Charlie did those himself.

  310. flombaye says:

322: in that case, i’ll volunteer to do a non-destructive biopsy with a dremel. the answer is in there some place.

  311. ‘The expert witnesses called to explain to the
jury that Patty Hearst was actually a victim of coercive
persuasion, mind control and brainwashing … Joly West,
Margaret Singer, Robert Lifton and Martin Orne.

What did Joly West have to do with Vacaville Prison?
Joly West was Head of the UCLA Violence Project which
was approved by Ronald Reagan when he was Governor of
California, then shut down by public protest. It was
spearheaded by a number of people including some people
who were very interested in the history of CIA military
mind control, and have written books about it.

The UCLA Violence Project included research and
experimentation that was going to be done at
Vacaville Prison where they had the maxi-maxi which is
the maximum security place for the most freaked out
behaviorally disturbed psychotic psychologically difficult\ inmates in the California prison system which included Donald
    Defreeze and Charles Manson.

Who is Colston Westbrook? According to a book on the
Phoenix program which is the CIA’s covert operation in
the Vietnam War for killing 20 VC infrastructure non-military personnel headed by William Colby, future Director of the CIA.

According to that book, Colston Westbrook was a CIA Psy-War
expert in Vietnam who came back to the USA to Vacaville
Prison under cover of the Black Cultural Association and
used behavioral modification techniques on Donald Defreeze
and gave him his code name Cinque, and devised the seven
headed logo of the Symbionese Liberation Army. Subsequent
to this coercive persuasion work done on Donald Defreeze by
this Psy-War expert employed by the CIA in Vietnam.

Donald Defreeze was transferred to another location in
the jail from which he very easily escaped the next day
only to go capture Patty Hearst and use very systematic and sophisticated mind control techniques on her despite the
fact that he was a functionally illiterate black person
    off the streets…’

Latest example — the crowd at Sara Palin’s rally. Wouldn’t they have Alaskan accents?

  316. flombaye says:

329: this goes directly to what was problematic about the persecution of manson as the pimpdaddy of the murders: based entirely on a difference of wardrobe (business suits and neat hair), richard nixon went free after inducing a much grander scale of unprovoked homicides.

I’ve got standards, man. That Alaskan beaver needs to be thrown back into the wild.

  319. Amy outside of DC says:

Most people accept the fact that hot women live in a different world than the rest of us. People are always nice to them, they usually get their way, and they have no idea how the other half lives.
Sarah Palin grew up in Alaska, so her hotness went a lot farther. It didn’t quite work in the lower 48 (why she had to go to 5 colleges because batting her lashes just wasn’t as effective), but Alaska is different.

But this SOB gets his same well-pain sports position handed right back after only this short time?!?!?! What does this say to our kids, if you have money you aren’t punished as bad as the rest of us… all I can say is ewww…

babies… it was so cool. Mom knew I was there to help. She was a
great momma. Detroit is full of illegal dog fighting rings, it’s
    out of control

  406. my pooer's dad says:

Athens! No wait. Corinth! No, ah Shi*#.

  407. PJ — thanks for coining Gatesgate. That is such a great statement on the weirdness of American politics.

  408. flombaye says:

406: ““D`uin do ghob!” (Shut your gob)” – obviously an attempt at backward-masking “bogart nude”. nude gambling in casablanca? i’m shocked !! – shocked !!

  409. 426 — problem with the tull song is that it doesn’t begin with a peppy drum intro.

  410. #431, Danielle, “what does it say to our kids”? You do a crime, you do the time. Vick is a rotten son of a bitch. But he’s paid his debt to society, and we do not deny people a livelihood because of what it might say to the children.

And the compromise is one of two Senate bills. The House bill still has Public Option, and is quite good.

  411. flombaye says:

418: what? cant hear you. that little old lady jammed a couple of canes into my ears.

  412. Rusty says:

Dog fighting pens are where the hounds of hell live.

  413. Tony says:

Unfortunately, no cable news network will cover health care. I’ve seen it on Bloomberg but not anywhere else. Why? Because people care more about Michael Jackson’s drugs than if they can get their own. Is it stupid? Of course. But unfortunately, that’s the population we have.

  414. flombaye says:

421: well thank goodness that william callie and ollie north have balance their karma.

  415. 439… as I said, I have no problem with people who really pay their debt, but the rich get lesser sentences, can afford better lawyers, and then are immediately returned to some outrageously high paying jobs… I’m sorry, but it just wouldn’t go down like that for the rest of us… I just don’t feel that he’s really paid back his debt…I have no problem with him getting out of jail, but to hand him a multi-million dollar sports contract is insulting to the souls of all the animals he tortured and murdered…

  416. shāf says:

    Charlie Rangle?!

  417. 431 Vick lost 12 million dollars… is that enough?

  418. flombaye says:

427: okay by me if it’s okay bajou

  419. Tony, you happen to check out my blog yesterday… I went on a tirade about the same subject….

  420. shāf says:

meant “Rangel” (you know who I meant ;) )

  421. LeftCenter says:

    Poor Michael Vick.

  422. Please someone kill Big Insurance, Big Parma… and Congress
we are F#$Ked if we don’t get rid of these bought-and-paid-for
    douchebags

  423. Clint says:

Am I wrong in thinking that our congresscritters should be limited to getting the same level of quality of insurance that the majority of the members of their district get? After all, my supervisor gets better insurance than I do because he can afford more, right up to the head of my company. Since we’re technically the supervisors of Congress, shouldn’t we have equal if not better insurance than them?

It’s a simple view, sure, but why not?

  424. mark, no, the rest of us wouldn’t have 12 million to lose and are ass would still be sitting in jail…

  425. I guess I’m just angry today… this healthcare issue has me really fired up…

  426. flombaye says:

428: first things first. they cott aguy going around named “warrick dunn”. – this guy should be bitchslapped for hours by dermot mulroney and mcgeorge bundy for having such a bephucked name.

  427. Skyhawk says:

Lindsey liked her shoes, so of course he votes in favor.

  428. k to the g says:

Faxing your reps is better than email becauses it makes for tons of paper, according to Thom Hartmann.

  429. #444, nowhere in his sentencing hearing was there a parole provision “oh, yeah, you only can take menial jobs for the rest of your life”.

  430. my pooer's dad says:

Maybe he’ll end up with a dog loving center.

  431. #444 Amen, Sistah!!

#446 Boo freakin’ Hoo for Michael Vick. He’ll make it back in less than three years. Unless the afore mentioned linebacker destroys his knees in Game 1.

  432. “Sarah and the Birthers” What a great name for a band!

  433. Yay! former Detroit Tigers pitcher and Senator from Kentucky
Jim Bunning won’t run for re-election. He’s one like DICK Shelby
of Alamaba and other bastards who wanted to kill the domestic
auto industry in favor of foreign companies who pay them bribes
and locate in their non-union states… don’t let the door
    hit you Jimmy

  434. k to the g says:

    455. Love Dermot Mulroney. I’d pay a dollar to watch that!

  435. Aja says:

    Thank you, Shane-O!!!!!!!

  436. flombaye says:

439: i must be a great many levels of magnitude better than society.

  437. Rusty says:

#457 lions and tigers and bears.

  438. Vick is prolly done anyway in the NFL… I never liked him,
I just think people do need second chances…

  439. People need to stop conflating “justice” with “revenge”

  440. 460… I know… it just speaks volumes of about the ethics of the team manager / owner (or whoever the heck hires him back)… I’m not saying every person who commits a crime should never be able to get a good job… that’s stupid… I’m just saying that the rest of us wouldn’t be taken back to our $100K + jobs after we did something like that…(besides perhaps on WalStreet)

  441. flombaye says:

    446: negative (see 425)

  442. it’s summer, it’s hot… sticky, sweaty… Congress SUCKS.
Health Care Reform is turning into a nightmare… it’s
enough to make one start drinking early…

  443. Skyhawk says:

I tend to call, and e-mail. But yes, faxing is also effective. Guess I’ll send a couple one off at lunch.

  444. Skyhawk says:

Oops I meant I’ll send a couple of them off at lunch.

  445. flombaye says:

    460: sentencing reform. excellent idea.

  446. #469 I’m pretty sure SOMEONE will sign him. There are too many teams with crappy QBs out there. I bet he’ll get picked up by a team mid-season.

  447. Vick is an ignorant person
he’s got some kind of excuse, not that it let’s him off, what he
    did was horrible

unlike the rethugs who know exactly what they do

  448. Aja says:

Thank you caller. I think I’m going to call the Congress Critters again…

  449. PJ Squeezy Louise Hussein McFlavin says:

#326, #410: It’s been so much fun making fun of Palin’s stream-of-cluelessness that I’m going to feel like a hypocrite when I make fun of free-form poetry!

  450. Mike H says:

Michael Vick got off lightly, but even if he “paid his time”, he certainly doesn’t “need” to have a multimillion dollar sports career back in order to earn a livelihood.

Let him work at something a little less glamorous for a living, plenty of people do.

A pox on any football team that gives him a job.

  451. Amy outside of DC says:

Sarah Palin = Barely Goldwater.

  452. 473… I’m at the point of doing shots already today!!! Anyone got any Patron? Jack? Anything?

  453. k to the g says:

    Palin = Gitmo torture tapes

  454. Palin: ‘we eat therefore… we something… cook meth?
    doncha know!’

  455. flombaye says:

“bringing everyone to the table” invites copyright infringement action from the twilight zone, as does sarah palin herself.

  456. Rusty says:

Hey Palin I eat therefore I shit!!

  457. LeftCenter says:

Michael Vick should get a job tending animals in a shelter or pound.

  458. Good God, the names of those Palin kids are SOOOOO stupid.

  459. 483 here, have a littul o’this VO… it’s crisp and delicious…

  460. k to the g says:

    483. Here’s a little Patron Silver Medicine

  461. Skyhawk says:

Someone should do a Shatner/Palin spoken word mash-up.

  462. LeftCenter says:

Like my late older brother used to say to me when teasing me mercilessly as a kid, “You’ve got a hole in your head, but that’s beside the point.” I think it fits Michele Bachman.

  463. Scott says:

    410: LOL!!!

  464. flombaye says:

488: “…and you’re writing off a tazer and a nest of hornets as work equipment, mr vick ?”

  465. That’s like being the smartest kid with downs syndrom!!!

  466. #489 (continued) Even Bristol, which seems innocent enough. But if they’d done a little research they might have found out that it is an English euphemism for BOOB.

  467. is it just me or did the crazy woman with the birth cert
in the baggie sound just like palin, and look like her
from behind [same ugly beehive 'doo]

  468. LeftCenter says:

I thought Sarah Palin was an English euphemism for “boob.”

  469. flombaye says:

489: yes, but they laff their faces off over “warrick dunn”.

  470. 491 / 492… ahhhhhh… thank you!!

  471. If Michael Vick can make a go of being back in the NFL, then by ghob, more power to him. I don’t see too much difference between football and dogfights myself, but that’s just me, really.

  472. Oh Momma love how you’re Never decent

  473. k to the g says:

hey, can we play birther or mouth-breather now?

  474. SPARTAC!!!!!!! (see, it’s sparta plus a C which stands for 100. Clever, huh?)

  475. 503 both deep pools of ignorance and brutality

  476. Skyhawk says:

Someone roll up a newspaper and bat Biden on the nose.

  477. flombaye says:

498: thank you for keeping us a breast of these things.

  478. Aja says:

    488: I think that sounds good….

  479. Amy outside of DC says:

For a Birther, any time security doesn’t escort you from the meeting makes it a success!

  480. #500 It is NOW!!!! HAH!!

  481. I drink therefore I … ummm … ahhh … whooo! Boy oh boy …

  482. flombaye says:

    hey, sarah.s CO-OPERATIN HERE !!

  483. LeftCenter says:

#506 But my post was Sparta + 200 so that would make it “SPARTACC”

  484. #509 (once more channeling my inner Chris Matthews) HAH!!!!!

  485. Amy outside of DC says:

St. Paul is also where that wedding took place that was all over youtube last week where veryone danced down the aisle.

  486. always great

you people are like… heroin to a junkie… booze to me…
something something… thanks for being there

  487. flombaye says:

515: sheer spartataccc was a fine album, you closet queen lover you !!

  488. #515 Right you are. My math not so good.

  489. LeftCenter says:

Wow, that was fast! Time to get outta here. See you tomorrow!

  490. Tony says:

Don’t get too excited over the home sales news, folks. It’s all due to foreclosures and short sales. The housing market is not in good shape.

And on that note, I hope you have a good day.

  491. Skyhawk says:

Wow I didn’t even see that Shatner beat parody on Conan. I should have asked for million dollars first.

  492. PJ Squeezy Louise Hussein McFlavin says:

#498: Well, I don’t think they were planning to send her to Oxford…

    Good day all!

  493. shāf says:

Great show. Have an wonderful day, everyone!

  494. k to the g says:

Thank-you liveblog and mooks! Steph and Mooks are better than pills and drips anyday.
