American notions of African ethnicity are shaped by the fact that American blacks’ ancestors came from West Africa (from a racial group called “Pygmoids”), and are variably mixed with Europeans and Native Americans. This notion seriously undersamples the vast degree of racial and ethnic diversity within Africa.

Africa, in reality, has four distinct racial groups, only two of which are arguably “black”: the Pygmoids concentrated in sub-Saharan West Africa, the Tall Negroid group in the south-Eastern Sahara and Rift Valley. In addition, there are the Caucasoids of the Northern Sahara and the non-black capoids originally dominant in the south, but who mainly exist now, because of the Bantu migrations, in a distinct form in the Khoi-khoi and San peoples. These groups also roughly follow the four language families in Africa (Niger-Congo, Nilotic, Afro-Asiatic, and Khoi-San).

The upshot of all this is that Africa has more genetic diversity than the rest of the world combined; and it’s not consistent with population genetics to suggest that “blackness”, of those ethnoracial traits associated with modern West African populations, is a primeval state of modern humans, and all other ethnicities are derivative – but rather that all ethnicities, including the black ones, are derivative, and adaptive, and quite recent in their evolution.

we don’t have skin samples for lucy, so we have no idea what color she was. Pink as a chimp or dark as a bonobo. some suggest that the kalahari bushmen are the closest to eve, but I don’t see any reason for them to believe that except sentimental reasons. They seem like noble savages, so let’s claim them as our forebears. In fact, we (asians) were kicked out of africa, probably unable to compete for food or space with the people we left behind. We encountered the last generation so weak it couldn’t survive in africa–the neanderthals–and we largely ate them into extinction. And we’ve been eating ever since.

Actually, the last common ancestors of humans (mitochondrial Eve) may have been Africans, but they were certainly not “black”. The racial traits of the two distinct black racial groups in Africa are just as much derived characters as racial traits of every other racial group.
