schakowskyRep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) calls in at 7:30am Pacific to talk about health care reform.

sestakRep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) calls in at 8:05am Pacific to talk about the National Defense Authorization Act, Iran, health care reform, and military readiness.

choiLt. Dan Choi calls in at 8:30am Pacific to talk about his efforts to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and his work with Knights Out.

Iran’s Guardian Council has ruled out the possibility of nullifying the results of the country’s disputed presidential election, saying irregularities were reported before the balloting – not during or after. The announcement was another in a series of inconsistent stances by the council on how to handle the unrest stemming from the disputed June 12th race.

President Obama signed legislation yesterday, giving the FDA new power to regulate tobacco. The law gives the FDA power to ban candy-flavored and fruit-flavored cigarettes and prohibits tobacco companies from using terms such as “low tar,” “light” or “mild” and required larger warning labels on packages.

• President Obama yesterday praised a decision by the nation’s pharmaceutical industry to agree to a deal cutting drug costs for elderly Americans, calling it an example of the kind of compromise required for successful national health care reform.

The death toll climbed to nine in a rush-hour collision between two Metro trains north of Washington, D.C. yesterday. Dozens of others were treated at the scene.

    Helllloooo

  2. trojanrabbit says:

Gooood morning Laura! Gooood morning livebloggers!

Yay, the seniors get a break on their meds, just means we pay more. Whoopie.

  3. trojanrabbit says:

Whaaa?!?! No more candy cigarettes? OUTRAGE!

  4. shāf says:

Hi Laura, Paul and the rest of the early risers. Good Morning, Team Steph!

Our thoughts go out to the families of those killed in yesterday’s Metro accident in D.C. and to those who are recovering from their injuries. Are they any Live Bloggers who were involved (or knew someone)?

This will be another drive-by blogging for me. Day Two of my three day class. The good news is that by the end (with a test), I’ll have another certification for my resume. Don’t want to ignore my continued marketability in my first career, while I’m perusing a second (or is it my third? What-ev!)

  5. KSyrahSyrah says:

Is anyone awake yet? Good Morning! OK. It’s gong to be a big deal I think that Sarkozy wants to ban the hajib (the head covering Muslim women wear) but it’s my understanding that it isn’t in the Koran. They wear it because they believe that the oil in a woman’s hair will drive them insane. It doesn’t seem to be working.

    BooHoo; Ed McMahon passed away…

Pailin struck again: The supreme court OK’s dumpingmine waste into a lake in Alaska, which include mercury. It will kill all of the fish. Pailin said it was ‘a great day for Alaska’ because it will creat 300 wholejobs. How did this ignorant trash get elected?

  6. shāf says:

I’ll also post that Ed McMahon has died at age 86. There’s few details except that McMahon died just past midnight at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, according to Howard Bragman.

  7. trojanrabbit says:

    6.

The Tonight Show is reunited. RIP Mr. McMahon sniff

  8. KSyrahSyrah says:

I’m watching GMA and hippie clothes are back in style. Yeah, baby!! Those were sure “the fashion years??????” Rather than dressing like the 60’s I wish everyone would voice their outrage like we did then…Would anyone go spend $1 for four postacards to send to their congressman, President and two Senators in support of single payer health care? That would be nice.

  9. Carol Hussein in Central Mass says:

    good morning, my fellow stephomites.

  10. Tony says:

Morning, all. Just a quick one today. It’s another gorgeous early summer day here in the DC area, and the humidity hasn’t kicked in yet.

Anyway, I’ve been busy blogging. First I wrote about Tobacco Regulation and Cigarette Companies.

Then I blogged about The SEC Charges Madoff Feeder Hedge Fund with Fraud.

Check it out and the rest of my work at Buy and Hold Plus.

I won’t be able to stay for very long today, but you guys know where to find me.

Oh, and does it piss anyone in the DC area off that some celebutard gossip is getting as much air time as the crash of the two Metro trains?

  11. trojanrabbit says:

Tony, it’s always pissed me off that when I go to the cafeteria to have lunch, instead of getting news, I get almost an hour of celebutard crap. I personally don’t give a crap about Jon and Kate or Slutney’s latest escapade. The only break I got from that was almost an hour covering GHWB’s skydive. WGAF. How much did THAT cost the taxpayers?

  12. Dan The Man says:

    Good Morning Board!

Happy Birthday Frances McDormand (52). “Yah, yah – he’s FLEEING THE INTERVIEW!”

Know that Mike Malloy is off this week, but did anyone tune in yesterday? All that was on KPTK was dead air. Have to listen online because am cheap and local WCPT doesn’t carry Randi or Mike. WCPT has Ron Regan (not bad) and Richard Greene (does your Gaydar kick in listening to Greene?). Nothing personal – just rather have Randi and Mike.

  13. LeftCenter says:

    Good morning, live blogospherians! \

  15. LeftCenter says:

    I’m walkin’ on sunshine…

  16. Tony says:

Bush Sr’s skydive probably cost the taxpayers nothing. Hell, man, if you were a skydiving business, wouldn’t you like to brag about how you were the company that Bush Sr. went to for his 85th birthday?

Bush Sr also backed Sotomayor and said the racist charges against her were wrong.

I liked the Bush Sr. who called Reagan’s policies voodoo economics and who defended Sotomayor. I don’t like the Bush Sr. who banned funding for abortions.

  17. LeftCenter says:

I wish I could get my wife to quit smoking.

  18. Tony says:

Hey….I blog about it, Steph talks about it…tobaccy regulation.

  19. YourAverageIdiot says:

    LeftCenter
    I’m walkin’ on sunshine…

Also on that record – Red Wine and Whiskey…

  20. scooter says:

Ed McMahon’s ashes should be preserved in a hermetically-sealed mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnall’s porch.

  21. Do we really need to reboot Conan? Just produce Milius’ King Conan script, dammit.

  22. Skyhawk says:

    Morning Peeps!

  23. Good Morning All!!!!! Yet ANOTHER reason to ride my bike to work, huh? Not to make light of this tragic accident in any way. Very sad. But also very lucky that these were two INbound trains and not OUTbound. Being that it was rush hour that could have been MUCH MUCH worse.

  24. Skyhawk says:

    RIP Mr. McMahon.

  25. LeftCenter says:

Sad news about Ed McMahon. And sad that he died in debt.

  26. LeftCenter says:

Maybe Perez Hilton didn’t know the Toronto number for 911.

  27. Will.i.am lost all credibility when he pimped for Terry MacAuliffe here in Virginia. Too bad for him, and good for us, Deeds won that primary.

  28. Morning. 5 Palin loves dumping mine waste into a pristine
Alaska lake, killing everything with mercury and creating
300 jobs. I couldn’t be less surprised. I’m sure when Todd
or Whoever schups that rotten moron does it he’s always on
top, cause Sara Palin can only f#%K up… that twit.

It’s the longest day of the year, therefore the foulest
since it’s almost never ending. I have a heart full of
hate and a mind full of twisted bitterness toward almost
everything and everyone this morning, but Steph, the mooks
and you all help quite a bit…

  29. Tony says:

Stop picking on Ms. California. She was stripped…just not of the right thing. I’ve always maintained that Ms. California should have been stripped, just not of her crown.

Is Joe Cocker still alive? Have him do a song, you can leave your crown on. I’ll sell it to her.

  30. 11 the only way to stomach ‘celebrity’ ‘news’ is when Steph does it

  31. LeftCenter says:

What’s with the pauses in this ad? Is that a synthesized voice?

  32. Shane-O says:

#29 if ONLY someone (Shaf) had thought of that!!

  33. Tony says:

Okay, folks, I’ve got to go. Have a good one and visit my site!

  34. Outing should be only used against closeted gays who argue against gay rights. Otherwise it’s nobody’s business.

  35. LeftCenter says:

The thing I never understood about the Larry Craig spiel is the “I love my wife” part. So if he’s gay he couldn’t love a member of the opposite sex?

  36. 35 Larry Craig, typical rethug scumbag: total hypocrite and liar.
    And wouldn’t resign.

  37. LeftCenter says:

    Bread and circuses….

  38. Hiya, Bloggoes!

NIce bit on Daily Kos’ front page in tribute to George Carlin, who (I believe) died a year ago today.

Which kinda makes me way “wow,” because last summer seems like a huge, long time ago.

  39. 27. PeterW, I think that’s overstating things. I don’t believe will.I.am “lost all credibility”. Just because you disagree with his choice?

  40. #39, because MacAuliffe isn’t about “change”. He’s a crooked neoliberal moneybags, who literally said his qualification for governor was his fundraising abilities.

  41. flombaye says:

35: while the implication of exclusivity in sexual orientation was one possibility, larry craig has an original timbre and cadence that suggests perhaps the man speaks in poetry, just like underdog, except blank verse.

  42. 38 Hi Madduane, yes we lost a bunch of Greats recently,
George Carlin, Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Anton Wilson,
    Hunter Thompson…

  43. flombaye says:

43: i got the others, but never the hunter thompson. was he just too subtle? “i mean it must be high or low…”

  44. 42 Larry Craig is not homosexual, but the men he fellates are…

  45. Oh, god, Raza Pahlavi needs to STFU. The guy’s family is soaked in blood. His family dynasty was worse than anything the current regime was doing.

He’s probably on the CIA payroll.

  46. flombaye says:

45: yeah, it’s so easy to taste the difference.

  47. Skyhawk says:

The Internet is a bunch of tubes!

  48. flombaye says:

“if einstein was so smart, why is he dead?”

  49. Skyhawk says:

    Scottzi? Oh lord.

  50. flombaye says:

does SScottzi have to call him both “nyet” and “yahoo”? that’s harsh.

  51. LeftCenter says:

Ah, an anti-Jewish rant from Scott.

  52. Amy Outside of DC says:

When you use the phrase “international Jewry” you lose most of your credibility.

  53. LeftCenter says:

    #53 MOST?????

  54. flombaye says:

of course, “internal matter” was the same excuse gorbachev used about criminal actions. – AFTER nuremburg trials had figured out it doesnt work that way.

  55. You know what I hate most about these anti-Semite callers? They make legitimate criticism of Israel, our Congress’ deference to AIPAC and neocons, that much more difficult to voice – because people can always try to lump you in with those drooling idiots.

  56. flombaye says:

53: totally. i mean isnt a “prince albert” quite enuff?

  57. 44 Hunter, subtle? you crack me up flombe.
Yeah, Hunter was subtle, like when he wrote

“journalism is neither a profession or a trade,
it’s a catch all for fuck offs and misfits, a
false door into the backside of life walled off
by the building inspectors but just deep enough
for a wino to curl up in a jack off like a chimp
    in a zoo cage”

tell us how you really feel Hunter, don’t hold back…

  58. 53 — Oh, I thought he said “International Jewelry”. Nevermind.

  59. Dan The Man says:

Whenever I hear the “brake” music, I always think of this video!

  60. scooter says:

#46 I was shocked last night to see anyone from the Pahlavi family on my TV. Like you say, Razi needs to zip it. Permanently.

  61. Jim Louise Ward, no one knows any history back that
far 1956? whatareyou crazy? these feebs we got today
never heard of Mossedegh or Hungary or Communism for that matter

  62. dkl says:

Hey Chris, how about getting Rick Steves on air for his take on Iran? He did a great documentary on Iran because he wanted Americans to know who we were about to bomb…

    http://www.ricksteves.com/iran/iran_menu.htm

  63. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

Good morning. Just got out of bed. I heard the caller ask how people could believe that the west is behind the demonstrations in Iran. It’s not so hard to believe when you know that it was a CIA agent, Kermit Roosevelt, who paid people to join the mobs that helped overthrow Mossadeq in the 50s. The Iranians are aware of this history. I’m not saying we are behind these, but you can see how Iranians might believe it considering our past behavior.

  64. flombaye says:

what made this the greatest nation (1946-1968) ??? – oh yeah, the profusion of well executed checks and balances… like holy water to mccain.

  65. Dan The Man says:

Funny that a closet queen like Lindsay Graham talks about being “passive”, when everyone knows he’s the first one to drop em and bend over.

  66. flombaye says:

66: where is boehner while this is happening?

  67. LeftCenter says:

I’ve figure it out! This ticket ad sounds like Jim Ward’s “educational films”!

  68. YourAverageIdiot says:

Health care – health insurance is a legal skimming operation. The CEO of United Health Care took a $1 Billion bonus for one year service. How many children would have been covered with that $1 Billion?

  69. LeftCenter says:

    #67 Drinking.

  70. Amy Outside of DC says:

Actually KTLK, the Metro death toll has been lowered to 7.

  71. 71 — some people came back to life? Awesome!

  72. Amy Outside of DC says:

I thought #70 was the answer to #65.

  73. YourAverageIdiot says:

Health care – the problem isn’t just with the House and Senate and “their” campaign finances. How many Americans profit from our pain with HCA stock or shares in mutual funds that trade in heath insurance shares?

  74. LeftCenter says:

#73 Could be both, come to think of it.

  75. scooter says:

Take it easy on Grampy. What he knows about meddling in other nations’ affairs he learned from Lafayette. In person!!

  76. Amy Outside of DC says:

#72 I think it was critical patients saying I’m not dead yet. I’m feeling much better. I think I’ll go for a walk. I feel happy….

  77. Perez Hilton is a drain on society in general and the gay movement specifically!!!

  78. YourAverageIdiot says:

Wild Thing – never gets old!

    I just miss Sam Kinison.

  79. Or maybe one of ‘em was played by Bruce Willis in the M. Night Shyamalan(sp?) documentary.

  80. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

Any Senator or Representative who voted for the three-trillion dollar goosechase in Iraq is not allowed to call healthcare reform “too expensive.”

  81. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

Who is Perez Hilton? I’ve heard of his name but what does he do?

  82. Amy Outside of DC says:

#81 But hypocracy is one of the GOP’s platforms!

  83. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

If Sean had his way, these same Iranians would be dead.

  84. 82 — runs a really ugly gossip blog that has gotten a “scoop” or two. I find him to be a bottom feeder.

  85. good morning everyone … I’ll only be here for 1/2 hour or so

  86. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

If living like a slob keeps you health, I’m going to live forever.

  87. YourAverageIdiot says:

Health Care – Health insurance companies are just like the banks. Privatize the profit and socialize the risk. A patient who gets too sick to work loses his health care and applies for Social Security Disability.

  88. 79 Sam Kinison was another great we lost
Prof. Turgidson in Back To School:

‘Cause Truman was too much of a pussy wimp to let
MacArthur go in and blow out those commie bastards!

Good answer. Good answer. I like the way you think.
    I’m gonna be watching you.

  89. Steph’s gotta deworm Oliver. And prolly Jim.

  90. Amy Outside of DC says:

#90 Thorton Melon’s Big and Fat – if you want to look thin, hang out with fat people.

  91. flombaye says:

must leave now. essay question: is it physically possible to hear rep joe sereesataka without thinking of “land of the lost” ? – ganactik !

  92. LeftCenter says:

    Ya gotta love dense beaver.

  93. scooter says:

Hmm. I wonder if Mark Sanford saw any beavers on his hike?

  94. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

I was listening to an old SMS podcast last night — the one where a trucker claims that 39 truckers _in his company alone_ have died because of anti-idling laws.

Steph and the mooks don’t challenge him but I decided to check his claims. I can’t find anything. Does anyone know?

That is such a huge number — it must be hundreds nation-wide that surely there would be news reports.

  95. YourAverageIdiot says:

Hoeissue? Isn’t that a town in Family Guy?

  96. doh #103 should read

no “now it’s safe [chicken sound effect]“

  97. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    YourAvergaeIiot,

Excellent point, one I hadn’t thought of.

Universal healthcare will also creat savings in Social Security. (Is is called “SSI?”)

Big money, I suspect. A lot of people are on that.

  98. I’m amusing myself writing my own jokes:

    “Madame Butter Fry”

  99. Amy Outside of DC says:

Finally reading the Liveblog, Producer Chris?

  100. SpiffyHussein says:

Hello all! Love Dear Leader welcoming me as I turn on the radio.

#93—I always look really fat when I’m standing with thin people. If I lived in the Midwest I think I’d look great (this is not meant to insult any town in the Midwest.)

Sorry to hear about Ed McMahon. Very sad to hear about the train in DC. I hope to God that train engineer wasn’t texting too.

  101. SpiffyHussein says:

I have to call Feinstein today. She bothers me a lot sometimes.

  102. and that texting on a subway happened out here too … the engineer who was texting is from my town

  103. 106 Madduane Butter Fry

free associating while thinking about rethugs:
one fish, blew fish, f#@K fish, dead fish

  104. LeftCenter says:

Yeah, but you have to remember some of those 50 are blue dogs (Republicrats).

  105. dkl says:

isn’t it ironic that there was just a commercial for Siemens on the webstream???

    http://gizmodo.com/5299826/nokia-siemens-helped-iran-rig-networks-for-government-control

  106. Amy Outside of DC says:

“They say 50 is the new 40″. Will that work if I get pulled over doing 55 in a 40 MPH zone?

  107. LeftCenter says:

#114 No, but it might if you go 50 in a 40.

  108. YourAverageIdiot says:

Richard Cheese has a new record – Viva La Vodka

  109. 114 — I like your sense of proportion. Can I buy stuff in bulk from you?

  110. SpiffyHussein says:

58—only journalists can publicly demean their own profession like that and not only get and keep a job in that profession, but be revered.

  111. LeftCenter says:

My mom did something similar about three weeks ago. Stepped off a curb and broke her foot.

  112. 112 blue dog rethug
    rethug dumb mug

    ee ii ee ii oh

I’m with Jim’s film strip, how bout the Dems
grow a pair, man up and DO SOMETHING. Either
that or just go lipstick and a purse, get it
over with. Both parties could go the way of
the Whigs, wouldn’t bother me a bit.

  113. SpiffyHussein says:

“The insurance comanies had their way with us.” I couldn’t have put it better myself.

  114. LeftCenter says:

Good description Congresswoman. “Had our way with us.”

  115. YourAverageIdiot says:

114 – Now that I’m nearing 47 and I’m looking at Steph at 48, it is just a matter of perspective.

  116. SpiffyHussein says:

If the HMOs can collude then I think the unisured have the right to collude also.

Let’s get 46,000,000 people colluding on their 8sses.

  117. LeftCenter says:

#114 With Steph 48 is the new 28.

  118. SpiffyHussein says:

46,000,000 people would say, “What doctor?”

  119. tee hee she’s reciting every point I put in the letters to my senators and reps

  120. LeftCenter says:

We won’t be in the same place in ten years. We’ll be overwhelmingly worse off.

  121. Neil in Lake Forest says:

Watching the Democrats fall apart on health care reminds me of a line from “The West Wing.”

“This administration doesn’t need an opposition party, you know that? We do fine by ourselves.”

  122. LeftCenter says:

The doughnut hole is the most ridiculous part of Medicare Part D. If you’re on more than one medication the doughnut hole can break you.

  123. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL)

    I like her

  124. LeftCenter says:

Jan Shakowsky won’t be Senator because rumor has it Lisa Madigan wants to run.

  125. 131 — Yeah, doughnut holes suck. So pointless! Why not the whole doughnut, not just the hole? Just one question chief…

  126. SpiffyHussein says:

130—the voters have to do their part. They have to write letters, call and **tch.

People talk to each other about this stuff but I guess they have some kind of fear of calling an authority figure and speaking up. And I’m sure many representatives like it that way—they don’t want to hear from the voters.

  127. SpiffyHussein says:

    132—me too. She’s like a Live Blogger.

  128. Almost Haiku:

    Get back in the hole
It puts lotion on it’s skin
    Buffalo Bob skins his humps

    Good Morning, America
    I’m Stephanie Miller
    Tits McGee is on vacation.

  129. LeftCenter says:

I’ve heard back from my Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson, and Dick Durbin. I haven’t heard back from Roland Burris.

  130. Rethugs: Almostpeople
    Dems: Almost an opposition

Hey look, you tried to do something right for the
American people, almost like a real political party!

  131. 140 — Jinx, you, me, and his entire third grade class.

  132. when can we start killing lobbyists? they’ve been killing us
    for years

  133. we need to let them know THIS WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN

    we need better Democrats

  134. LeftCenter says:

#144 We at least need Democrats who ARE Democrats.

  135. 145 — Democrats are the new Republicans. We need a straight up Socialist Party resurgence.

  136. YourAverageIdiot says:

Health care – the Right decry the bureaucrat making decisions that should be made by doctors and patients. This is true we currently have bureaucrats that have an oath to the shareholders aka the almighty dollar. With a public plan, the bureaucrat would have an oath to PUBLIC SERVICE aka US.

  137. SpiffyHussein says:

Here’s a new word we all have to learn:

“Retweeting, represented on Twitter with the symbol “RT,” means a user has taken someone else’s tweet — or message — and copied part or all of it. The original author is often credited through the convention “@username,” although sometimes the true source gets lost as messages spread further.” From Elizabeth Landau, CNN

Retweeting. It’s plagiarism with a cute new name.

  138. Jim? How will we know if he has a suntan there? Why would we want to?

  139. Good morning, MookenBloggsters.

Sunsine on my smickle, makes me happy!

  140. Greetings all. I hope this day finds you well.

  141. LeftCenter says:

2/3 of the show gone and only halfway to Sparta. A day without Sparta (like yesterday) is like a day without sunshine on your….

  142. Amy Outside of DC says:

#146 Listen to Limbaugh and Hannity. The Socialist resurgence is already here, man.

  143. 152 — I would like to hide from this day, but Hiya! Welcome to Bloggoeland!

  144. I’m with a caller of last week …. why aren’t the people asking being fired? That’s like only arresting the hookers for prostitution and not the customers.

The first part is DON’T ASK.

If you fired those who asked, people would stop asking

  145. 154 — Where? They think the Dems are socialists. They don’t know nothin’! Real socialists would cause mental breakdowns all over the AM dial.

  146. bad juju in Deetown this morning.
we’re left with what we started with, there was never
really any promise of anything better at the other end
    of the line anyway.

Booze, dope and dirty bluesy old jazz music, the kind
Henry Ford warned would corrupt the youth of America.
It all goes toward a fine edge; a twisted and unclean
ball of greasy, churning feelings rolling around inside
your head like a stunt cyclist inside a globe at a carney attraction…
rage and hopelessness and a deep gnawing fear in the pit
of your stomach. The cold sweat that comes with the
sick realization in the flat hard light of dawn
that you’ve wasted another night and the day ahead of you
is as wasted as you are…

and that your whole life is crushed and beaten in,
that despair, ennui and hatred are the only things
you’ve felt for a long, long time.

Who cares, anyway? Sop up some more booze, crank up that
old vinyl again with that strung-out, broken-down, late-night with-nowhere-to-go-and-no-friends song again. Wait for the
oblivion that comes down so sweet and dark but with such
    difficulty.

  147. well that’s it … my time here today is done… see you tomorrow! have a good rest of the day

  148. Problem is, Americans have pretty well reached the point to where these little sound bite phrases are all we respond to. God forbid that we might actually THINK or LISTEN to something more than a sentence long.

  149. 147: AMEN!!!!!!!!!! I went to the doc with an injured shoulder. He examined me and determined I needed an MRI. The insurance company denied it telling the doc I needed to do 45 more days of anti-inflammatories. They appealed and I got it…after 45 days. The MRI revealed a torn labrum requiring surgery. So…whenever these tools (at this point, it seems to transcend right or left and center on who’s gotten money from the various interests) talk about “government bureaucrats” I give them a big “BS!!!” and move on.

  150. Mark, I’ll have some of what you’re having.. ;->

  151. here’s what might make me feel better: seeing this headline:

“Bush, Cheney and PNAC bastards to be tried in International
Court for barratry, buggery, felonious mopery with intent
to creep, crimes against humanity and treason”

  152. LeftCenter says:

#164 I fear we won’t see anything even resembling that any time soon.

  153. SpiffyHussein says:

Ever watch “Man vs. Wild”? My son watches it sometimes. A boy learned to help rescuers find him from the show:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/23/grayson-wynne-man-vs-wild_n_219400.html

The only thing I’ve learned from that show is how to leaves leaves out overnight to catch enough dew so you can survive. It takes a lot of leaves.

  154. I’ll go further: “Bush Administration Principles to Undergo Painful Public Castrations Prior to Prison Terms”..

  155. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

I fully expect “public option” to fail.

The conservatives are going to hammer the hell out of any policy we do.

If it is only for the poor and working class, they will be able to kill it.

I can hear it now, “I don’t want my tax dollars going to those lazy Obomoochondriacs!”

  156. SpiffyHussein says:

169—-I’m believing Obama. He says “yes we can” and while I was very skeptical of the idea of that notion at the start, he’s done some pretty amazing things so far. I know he’s way smarter than I am so I’m thinking he’s got a rabbit to pull out of his hat in Washington.

  157. 168 Yea! These filth need the public bastinado.

  158. YourAverageIdiot says:

Dennis Kucinich is right about a Department of Peace. We still need young people in Afghanistan and Iraq willing to risk their lives. I think that these young people should be carrying shovels and textbooks and computers not guns and bombs.

  159. MidWestRuth says:

#169… That’s the way theya re. In my hometown there was a RW City Council member who voted against every Senior Center/ Senior Transport, etc. help. Her view? – if they didn’t up with enough money to retire on (and eat and pay doctors and taxis and meals)…well, that was their fault – No help from government.

  160. SpiffyHussein says:

169—one thing I know about Big Business. When they feel truly scared that something they have will be modified or taken away, that’s when they push really hard.

If they are pushing hard it’s because they are scared. So we need to rush them in that fear.

  161. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

Is overturning “Don’t Ask” the same as allowing gays in the military?

Gays were banned long before “Don’t Ask.”

    I’ve never understood that.

  162. SpiffyHussein says:

173—But most of those elderly worked for 50 years I’ll bet. They paid into the system.

  163. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    SpiffyHussein,

We have to push harder than big business.

That kind of bugs me about defeatist ProducerChris. He’s given up already.

  164. Just jumped back on the Live Blog….. what the @#$%???…. not a snowball’s chance in H E Double Hockey Sticks of Sparta today… oh well….

  165. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

Good Morning. I’m feeling a little sad today. We’ve lost some fine people, not the least of whom is the young woman who was ambushed by plain-clothes police in Iran. I wish I was as brave as she was. I can’t say, “I am Neda,” because I don’t have her courage. But I feel her loss.

  166. LeftCenter says:

    Producer Chris:

Just remember one thing. If at first you don’t succeed, give up.

  167. SpiffyHussein says:

What’s in a name? News for locals—part of Van Nuys gets a facelift in its name:

    >> MidWestRuth says:
    >> if they didn’t up with enough money to retire on (and eat and pay doctors and taxis and meals)…well, that was their fault – No help from government.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. If gov’t health insurance is only for SOME of the population, the conservatives will be able to kill it.

That’s why they have not been able to directly kill Social Security — all Americans, even conservatives, have a stake in it. And even conservatives don’t want to lose it.

But if “public option” is only for the working poor, the average conservative will demonize and try to kill it.

  169. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

I watch “I’m a Celebrity …” occasionally. Frangela got me started, but I do check in for a few minutes each show. I miss Frangela, but not the psychopaths. Fortunately, all those are gone. The ones who are left are good people making the best of an ODD situation.

  170. SpiffyHussein says:

177—I don’t think Chris has given up. But Steph and the Mooks are very savvy. They know the stinkiness of politics. They know it and fight it everyday just trying to get the show on more stations.

We have to encourage each other, that’s all. The b*st*rds have gotten away with so much over the past 30 years.

  171. Nile Rodgers, Bernie Edwards. awesome players!

  172. flombaye says:

back for blind reckoning — 141: that be he, and also too, will farrell played marshall willenholly in some movie – maybe a jay and silent bob thing. – what i meant about hunter thompson is, i was never able to detect the point; the point of hunter s thompson, if there be one, is what is subtle.

  173. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    Sarah in Santa Cruz,

I am going to try and avoid seeing that video but I share your compassion for her and the hundreds who have also been killed.

What’s making me sad today is that I I just read today that there are ONE MILLION displaced people in Pakistan because of the fight against Al Qaeda there. One million! And conservtives say that Pakistan is not cooperating enough!

  174. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

178-We can still get to Sparta. Don’t give up.

  175. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    SpiffyHussein,

Did Chris declare, about a half hour ago, “healtcare reform is not going to happen.”

  176. SpiffyHussein says:

179—-her death was and is shocking. She was shot in the heart by a sniper. They don’t even have courage enough to meet the protestors on the streets. The hid on the rooftops and took pot shots.

It’s disgusting. Such cowardice running a country. Reminds me of the Bush family.

  177. SpiffyHussein says:

189—I didn’t hear him. I was reading. Chris is a foil sometimes. Just ignore him, lol.

  178. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    20%?

If we can’t pass meaningful health care reform _now_, when can we?

  179. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

187-Hi, Ron. I saw only a few seconds of the Neda video. That was enough. She was a lovely, educated young woman. And courageous.

  180. YourAverageIdiot says:

I’m a veteran. DADT came after my time. But my understanding of the case against gays is that it is inconsistent with “good order and discipline.” Marital infidelity is more damaging to “good order and discipline,” but they rarely, if ever, dust that regulation off to use it against someone. I have heard it use recently, but it was a person who had said something that pissed off the Bush administration.

It is sort of like a morals clause in a contract.

  181. 191 — are you referring to his hat?

Also Onion on the belt story! Love that!

  182. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

Do you think Ensign found his mistress on a Ashley Madison ad played on the Stephanie Miller Show?

  183. LeftCenter says:

    Hmmm…the lover’s wife wanted hush money? There’s a word for that….

  184. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

    190-Cowardly, anonymous assassins.

  185. SpiffyHussein says:

182—But the public option has to be something all people can choose if they want to. The 46,000,000 are not all working poor! Many of them are employed full-time but their employer doesn’t offer insurance.

Please ignore those RW talking points that say the public option is like public housing–only for the poor. It should be another choice, just as private insurance is a choice.

  186. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    YourAverageIdiot,

    Weren’t there anti-gay rules before “Don’t Ask”?

It has always struck me as odd that we blame “Don’t Ask” for kicking out gays. “Don’t Ask” was an attempt to make it easier for gays to serve, right?

  187. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

196-Ashley Madison was being advertised all over the place. And now, not so much. I haven’t heard the ads for awhile.

  188. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    SpiffyHussein,

Will “public option” cover all 48 million?

Even so, unless it covers all 350 million, the conservatives will be able to kill it.

  189. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

201-madduane, you are such an optimist! I like it.

  190. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    Sarah in Santa Cruz,

I’m sure the senator didn’t find his mistress on Ashley Madison.

I’m just one of those who were mad at Stephanie Miller for running those ad while claiming she had no moral culpability for doing-so.

  191. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

To move us along to Sparta, why don’t we all send a hello to Steph? Or a request to Jim? I’m going to send 2 messages after this one, just to get closer to Sparta.

  192. flombaye says:

john ensign seems to look more thottful these days.
ashley madison …. passions traded under the starlit skies…
    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2004/06/12/HOGI2729S11.DTL&o=2

  193. SpiffyHussein says:

LOL, I was watching “Sunset Blvd” the other night and I finally heard where they got the clip “Max, Max!” It’s from that film. I laughed when I heard it.

Gloria Swanson was so gloriously nutty in that. She was wonderfully campy.

  194. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

Jim Ward, you wonder, you! Please do Obama putting Kim Jong Il in his place.

  195. YourAverageIdiot says:

I knew many gays when I served 1980-1990. One guy got a STEP, STripes for Exemplary Performance, promotion where he made Sergeant about 8 months before he was otherwise eligible.

  196. LeftCenter says:

So what will happen is we’ll flood this with messages and we’ll get to Sparta and I’ll call it at either 299 or 301.

  197. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    REQUEST FOR VOICE MONKEY JIM:

I want to hear Bill O’Reilly sing “Wild Thing” to Geraldo Rivera.

    The original version, of course.

  198. 158 164 sorry if I was being defeatist.
I’ll try being more optimistic. really, I will.

  199. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

Spiffy, if Stephanie can do Kathryn Hepburn, she can do Gloria Swanson. (This is my second effort to move us along to Sparta.)

  200. LeftCenter says:

Who the hell cares if anybody is gay in the military or anywhere else????

  201. Nostalgia voice request — W singing Zep’s “When the Levee Breaks”

  202. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

    213-It’s a gamble.

  203. SpiffyHussein says:

203—well I’m not in charge of these things but in the universe of my imagination, yes, the public option is something all can buy into by paying slightly higher taxes.

Let’s see, of all 46,000,000 paid $100 a year to buy in, how much cash would that raise? $4.6 billion. That’s a lotta money. I’ll bet that would be a great start for collective bargaining with health insurance companies and drug companies to buy insurance for these people.

Or double it. Make it $200 a year.

Or heck, I’ll give the gov’t $100 a month. That would cut my health insurance costs by 2/3s.

  204. 210 nice Mads!
I got no problem with the gays. I’m sure there
were gay guys in the barracks and showers with
    the rest of us.

A gay guy won’t take your last beer.

    He’s right, it’s the lack of integrity that’s a
    bigger prollem.

  205. flombaye says:

212: and also too, after ermey’s performance as a full mental jackoff with raging gay proclivities, who can possibly object ? – jack black ?

  206. 217 — hardcore redneck closet cases. You know, the kind of guy who goes into the military to prove his manhood.

  207. Skyhawk says:

So if the draft was revived today, just say you’re gay and the military won’t take you. I think this can argued as a national security issue.

  210. SpiffyHussein says:

206—I get mad at the HomeGain adds because they don’t let all real estate agents buy into their system.

  211. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

    194-Thank you for your service.
    And I agree.

  212. 222 at least ermey would give you the courtesy of…

  213. SpiffyHussein says:

215—you can be negative. We can take it!

  214. LeftCenter says:

    #226 There you go…gay cooks!

  215. Laura in Binghamton, NY says:

Has it been harder reaching Sparta lately?

  216. flombaye says:

werent elizabeth, lamont, or grady even worried about representative sanford wondering around in the woods having the big one?

  217. LeftCenter says:

#232 We didn’t even get close yesterday.

  218. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

We those prison guards who raped Abu Ghraib prisoners kicked out for being gay?

  219. SpiffyHussein says:

    235—very good point.

  220. YourAverageIdiot says:

As a military member I worked for a Civil Service GS-7 who was openly gay and protected by Federal Statutes. How is this different from a military member being gay?

  223. LeftCenter says:

  226. SpiffyHussein says:

It’s great that this soldier is taking on this battle. He’s very courageous and courage like that has no place in the military!

  227. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

206-I can’t think of a single reason Ashley Madison would ever appeal to me, and I don’t like hearing the ads. I don’t want to take away their right to advertise, but I would like to hear their services ridiculed, like we did for the Colon Blow spackle guy.

  228. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    YourAverageIdiot,

But did you shower with other civil servants? ;-)

That’s seems to be the main objection with these anti-gay goofballs.

  229. trojanrabbit says:

232 We’re all just chatted out.

    It’s murder on the fingers.

  230. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

    Yea, Lt. Dan Choi!

  231. Ken says:

Thinking about Mark Sanford’s ‘head clearing hike’

    What a hypocrite.
If this guy’s tax policies were in place he’d be BUSHWHACKING up there since there would

  232. Skyhawk says:

232 – It’s vacation time for some bloggers. I expect SPARTA to be rare for the next week or so.

  233. 242 — as we’ve grown together, we’ve learned to appreciate a certain companionable silence…

  234. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    Sarah,

I am not for banning Asley Madison. Or their ads.

But anyone who runs their ads and takes their money shares in their moral culpability.

  235. SpiffyHussein says:

242–I think capt. kept us all going with his witty reparte. He threw out the lines and we all fired back. sniff….sniff

  236. SpiffyHussein says:

  238. flombaye says:

235: legally, for it to count, they have to prove that you liked it enuff. – if you do that, but you’ve never been gay and you love your wife, it’s pretty hard for them to convict you. … and i would do it again (strictly out of love for my country).

  239. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    What happened to capt?

  240. trojanrabbit says:

    249
Even more so when Steph & the Mooks are on vacation next week.

  241. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

252-I’ve heard from him. I think he misses us, too. I wonder if he’ll come back.

  242. LeftCenter says:

I hate it when anybody besides me has vacation….

  243. SpiffyHussein says:

250—lol, I actually think that’s true, lol. Also I think we all posted more when we were mad as hell at the Bushies. We’re not so angry these days.

  244. It’s the Summer Solstice. We’re all feeling the malaise

  246. LeftCenter says:

  247. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

    flombay,

    Thanks for clearing that up!

I’ve heard “ex gay” prisoners make the claim they weren’t gay in prison because they where “thinking about women” when they were having sex with men.

  248. LeftCenter says:

#262 You could take a walk here. It’s sunny and headed up to the mid-90s.

  254. flombaye says:

248: ken is definitely on to something. i shall now commence with an introductory proposal to create the game of “BUSHWHACKING”. it’s the same as “CLUE”, except different. okay, here’s my first proposal: whacking NEIL in the GRAIN SILO with a THRICE USED CONDOM.

  255. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

256-Ron, a right winger got on the live blog and picked a fight with capt. Instead of ignoring the idiot, capt tried to engage him. The idiot was pretty abusive, and when asked to block the creep, Producer Chris said no. capt thought that was wrong, so he left the blog.

  256. Ron McLovin' Luce says:

Hey, everybody, let’s make a pact to all contact at least one senator or representative today

Oh. Thanks. That’s too bad. I was aware there was an issue but I missed it.

  259. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

269-I’m going to e-mail capt and tell him we want him back.

  260. flombaye says:

what does the federal maiming statute prohibit?

It makes it a crime for someone

“cut, bite, or slit the nose, ear or lip, or cut out
or disable the tongue, or put out or destroy an eye,

    It further prohibits individuals from

  264. 274 — my senators are Kerry & Kennedy, my congressperson is Ed Markey. I feel pretty much all set. All I could really say to them is “You Go!”

  265. LeftCenter says:

  266. 274 ok, I’m gonna call my rep’s office, again
