The World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert level yesterday in response to the outbreak of swine flu that originated in Mexico. The number of cases confirmed by health officials worldwide totaled 82, most of them in the U.S. and Mexico, but hundreds more cases are under examination and Mexico has said 149 deaths may have resulted. The virus has now been confirmed to have spread to Asia and the Middle East.

• Morning debate and an afternoon vote are scheduled in the Senate today to confirm Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services, giving the agency a leader in the midst of the swine flu outbreak. She is expected to get the 60 votes needed, though perhaps with little margin to spare.

House and Senate Dems reached an agreement late last night on a budget resolution for 2010, which includes key spending priorities for the young Obama administration. The agreement came as lawmakers were reconciling the House and Senate versions of the budget package. The House and Senate will likely vote on it this week.

Almost every day, and I read the blog every day, I think, boy, capt sure is the heart of this blog. We have so many smart and funny regulars, so many distinguished contributers, but it's capt who hangs it together.
I'll be looking for you tomorrow, capt., cuz I look forward to blogging with you every morning. And if you don't come, who will bring the donuts on Thursday? And are you taking back the flat screen you put in the penalty box? And where do you keep the broom, cuz someone else is gonna have to clean up.

someone explain this email i got from capt?!?!?! wtf?

The right-wing "pro-life" movement needs to be knocked down a few notches. They simplify a complicated and personal issue, but the bottom line is that they are trying to tell women how to live!

now it's kinda working....

I'm surprised it's not the gays.

Steve I had a 6 year lapee of sanity and was a right winger at that time ... gave me some insight in to them and what they do and the way they think ... it also shot me to being far more radicalized left winger than I was prior to my lapse of sanity

Steve Pipenger. Former right winger. Former member of a congressman's staff (he was a right winger..dead now.) Gay man in a 9 year relationship with a Brazilian national who is a graduate student in the US. He's moving to Canada for his PhD, and I will follow him and live there in the coming couple of years.
