Health officials around the world worked to contain what appears to be a spreading swine flu outbreak this morning. Mexico appears to be the epicenter of the outbreak, where as many as 103 deaths are thought to have been caused by the illness. The United States has declared a public health emergency, which Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said “sounds more severe than it is.” There are now 20 confirmed cases in the U.S.

leahy• Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said yesterday that an independent commission is needed to determine who authorized the use of abusive interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists. “I want to know who was it who made CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

• The Obama administration announced late last week that the Pentagon would turn over to the ACLU 44 photographs showing detainee abuse of prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq during the Bush administration. The pictures are a part of the ACLU’s Freedom of Information Act request.

hillarySecretary of State Hillary Clinton made a surprise trip to Baghdad over the weekend, where she deplored the recent bombings in Iraq that left over 160 people dead, but said the “terrible and tragic events” haven’t stopped the nation from making strides in its security.

The U.S. is “relatively close” to making decisions on what to do with an initial group of Guantanamo Bay detainees, Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday. Holder said the first step is to decide how many total detainees will be set free, and he announced that it will be done “on a rolling basis.”

Having a fine wee can be a nice thing, but I meant to wish you all a fine week.

237
Saturday wasn't bad. I just puttered around with some of my radio gear. Had to work Sunday though, but that's OK. As long as OT is offered, I take it.

238---stock to watch ;-).

Isn't it great that health care in this country has figured out a way to get filthy rich off of people being very sick? It's so moral and upright.

OK, off to work on stuff. See y'all tomorrow!

#235 Cindy: "that came from a series of tweets with the astroglide company and producer chris"

 Was brown liquor after 2 am involved???

See you guys tomorrow!

Wish you bloggoe kids a fine wee! I probably won't be back until then.

Cheers, peace, and good health to you all

Buh Bye, Bloggoes!

No SPARTA today - the show is almost over?

Time flys when we're having fun and the funny!

You good people have a great start to the week.

Wash hands often and well.

Wash hands often and well.

Wash hands often and well.

Ciao for now!

Getting even the regular flu can be horrible. 10 days of feeling like crap. Then if you get a secondary bacterial infection on top of that you have to go to your doctor and argue that you really do need an antibiotic now---that it's not just a virus anymore.

Good show mooks! See you all tomorrow.

The best books I read on this are by Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Laurie Garrett, "The Coming Plague" and "Betrayal of Trust", both about 800 pages of very readable discussion of emerging pathogens and the critical role of public health, common sense, soap and clean water, as well as keeping your immune system healthy.

Hello trojanrabbit. How was your weekend?

#227--I couldn't agree more, 'factory farm flu' is way more accurate.

Hi Juliet!

Juliet - thank you ... that came from a series of tweets with the astroglide company and producer chris

229---I'm sure they can be entertaining.

"the factory farm flu"

More true than the idea it is all the little piggies fault.

Goooooooood morning kar

Hi Juliet---be grateful you have a job! The company that "fired" my daughter last week has no laid off someone else from her department.

Why they decided to treat her so **itty is beyond me. I do not understand the cruelty of bosses.

2 US lawmakers, others arrested at Darfur protest

Humanitarian leaders and U.S. lawmakers, including Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison and Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards, were led away from the embassy in handcuffs Monday after crossing a police line.

226 -- I think he was referring to Slumdog Millionaire. I've seen bits & peices of them. They're surreal by our standards, but kinda cool, really. Long, with lots of musical numbers, usually.

223--right, i was thinking the same thing! Maybe more of us should be eating the soy-bacon right about now, eh??

Hi, Cindy! Love the Anti-Pirate Astroglide Cannon! Hi Capt, Kar, Sue and all the regulars and irregulars!

Typical Manic Monday, I'm able to listen but not contribute much :-(

Why don’t we all just quit calling it the swine flu, which implies that filthy pigs wallowing in the mud have infected our tidy little selves, and call it what it is: the factory farm flu, in which horribly overcrowded pigs raised by overcrowded, underpaid humans recycle microorganisms (poo) rapidly enough to genetically foster virulence.

220---I've never watched a Bollywood film.

one person has been hospitalized in the US with swine flu

Swine Flu Economic Opportunity or "How to Think Like a Big Drug Company": Buy stock in whoever makes Purex Hand Sanitizer.

"I just burned my soy bacon!"

There has to be a swine joke in there somewhere - I just can't get to it.

217---lol, thanks capt. Seriously, my mother always looked great even when she was feeling like "death warmed over", one of her favorite sayings.

I do believe it is hereditary.;-)

RT @Roland_Hedley: After wild coughing fit, settled in to watch witless Bollywood film. Only final dance number was believable. Left me giddy, dizzy, nauseous.

195---I totally believe your nephew was scared out of his wits. It's not nice to live in a police state.

oops--I get so involved in the live blog...I just burned my soy bacon!

#213,

Yet you still look marvelous!

Morning Kar!
