LiveBlog for Monday, April 27, 2009

Health officials around the world worked to contain what appears to be a spreading swine flu outbreak this morning. Mexico appears to be the epicenter of the outbreak, where as many as 103 deaths are thought to have been caused by the illness. The United States has declared a public health emergency, which Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said “sounds more severe than it is.” There are now 20 confirmed cases in the U.S.

leahy• Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said yesterday that an independent commission is needed to determine who authorized the use of abusive interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists. “I want to know who was it who made CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

• The Obama administration announced late last week that the Pentagon would turn over to the ACLU 44 photographs showing detainee abuse of prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq during the Bush administration. The pictures are a part of the ACLU’s Freedom of Information Act request.

hillarySecretary of State Hillary Clinton made a surprise trip to Baghdad over the weekend, where she deplored the recent bombings in Iraq that left over 160 people dead, but said the “terrible and tragic events” haven’t stopped the nation from making strides in its security.

The U.S. is “relatively close” to making decisions on what to do with an initial group of Guantanamo Bay detainees, Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday. Holder said the first step is to decide how many total detainees will be set free, and he announced that it will be done “on a rolling basis.”

    Goooooooood morning all

Spending the day in the Fortress of Solitude, just like yesterday, though today it’s nowhere near as hot.

  2. capt says:

    Good morning one and all!

  3. capt says:

“nowhere near as hot hot hot!” ala Buster Poindexter

  4. trojanrabbit says:

    Gooood morning capt!

  5. Carol in Central Mass says:

    Ole, Paul and capt!
Yikes, I don’t want to worry about a swine flu.
I thought we settled that last November. ;-)

  6. capt says:

    Good morning Trojanrabbit!

You had to work yesterday? THAT is hardly fair. :(

  7. capt says:

    Good morning Carol!

  8. capt says:

Republicans Stripped Pandemic Flu Preparedness From Stimulus

    [snip]

Obey and other advocates for the spending argued, correctly, that a pandemic hitting in the midst of an economic downturn could turn a recession into something far worse — with workers ordered to remain in their homes, workplaces shuttered to avoid the spread of disease, transportation systems grinding to a halt and demand for emergency services and public health interventions skyrocketing. Indeed, they suggested, pandemic preparation was essential to any responsible plan for renewing the U.S. economy.

    *****

The party of “no” strikes again. UGH!

  9. trojanrabbit says:

Well, as long as the wife is still not working and not collecting, I will take what I can get.

    Gooood morning Carol.

  10. capt says:

    #9,

Oh darn, I forgot about your wife being off these days.

    Ugh!

    Darn this Bush economy!

  11. Carol in Central Mass says:

What’s up with the kids at Kent State?
setting everything they can on fire….for sport.

    with video.

  12. capt says:

They are making Joy take her PTO (paid time off – sick & vacation) – the GAP just made the change to “use it or lose it”

She has in excess of 200 hours accrued.

So it works out to basically every other Friday off for the nest year. (with clusters of days off around the holidays)

  13. capt says:

    #11,

    Wadda mess!

  14. trojanrabbit says:

    12
Lots of places are doing that capt, including here. I think now allowing 5 weeks of accrued vacation would not be typical.

  15. capt says:

    #14,

And Joy gets 5 weeks pto added each year. The only real problem is the Oracle version upgrade (current project) has her working most weekends as well as many nights during the week. I doubt she will be able to take all of that time off. Even trying to take one day every two weeks is not likely gonna happen.

So I wager she loses some of that time – still good she has the job security. (for now)

  16. Skyhawk says:

    Good morning everyone!

  17. capt says:

    Skyhawk!

    Top-o-the Morning!

  18. good body every morning!

    ;)

I see there are a lot of early birds…

  19. *brewing wake-up juice*

    (aka coffee)

  20. trojanrabbit says:

    15
Sounds about right. A benefit that isn’t. Hey, take that vacation time or lose it, but we can’t let you take it because we don’t have the manpower to allow it.

But I agree, right now job security is paramount.

Gotta run for a while, time to decipher the test results and set up for the next one, which considering all the aggrivation this beast has put me through so far I’m predicting will not go smoothly. :(

  21. capt says:

    #18

    Um, I am a dino – very pre-bird . . .

    Good morning Brianmonster!

Did you see I posted your painting in the photos section of Stephspace?

  22. capt says:

Hurry back when you can Trojanrabbit!

  23. Carol in Central Mass says:

    Happy Mondee, Skyhawk and Brian!

  24. Carol in Central Mass says:

    bye, Paul

  25. Skyhawk says:

    Morning Carol and Brian!

  26. I can hardly tell it’s a Monday with you guys, Stephanie, the mooks and all the flavin.

  27. Carol in Central Mass says:

Anderson, Indiana profiled in the NYTimes…

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/us/politics/27anderson.html?hp

Anderson was Detroit before Henry Ford. My dad’s family are all from there.

They are getting their stimulus money and they are grateful to Barack.

  28. Tony says:

Morning, all. So, I wonder if it will be all torture all the time today. I sure hope not.

Looks like the swine flu is on the top of the list. This could be a big problem, and it could potentially kill an airline or two.

  29. Carol in Central Mass says:

Katie in Hudsen who sometimes posts here was on air last week. She made her point about the deliberate deceit of the Bushies, still costing us lives and treasure.
    Go Katie!!

  30. capt says:

    Almost SHOWTIME!

    Places everybody.

    *jazz hands*

  31. #29

    torture does get old quick!
    …and then it never ends!

    *rimshot*

  32. Skyhawk says:

I brought hot croissants and assorted cheeses. *passing tray around*

  33. Carol in Central Mass says:

    Skyhawk! *nom nom* Thanks

    Excellent stuff!

    Thanks!

In a nation ruled by swine, all pigs are upward mobile.

    ~ Hunter S. Thompson (1939 – 2005)

  38. Tony says:

Know how we know Obama is different than Bush? He’s giving an address at the National Academy of Sciences!

Bush and science were like oil and water.

  39. Tony says:

Hey, folks, did you know that you can compost your coffee grounds? And if you don’t have a place to do it, put it into a yard waste bag and when that fills up, take it to the recycling facility.

  40. the president’s taking more than 5 minutes to answer a question again.

    *snickers*

  41. Tony says:

Holy crap, a cogent answer that goes beyond talking points, without emphasis on words of more than two syllables?

    What’s wrong with this world?

Anyway, I gotta scoot. Later, skaters, and please do check out my blog and leave comments!

  42. capt says:

    #43,

    Must be a broken teleprompter?

  43. flombaye says:

all the nixonians (reagan / bush / arbusto) were more symptomatic than causal of their twisted zeitgeist; they just werent competent as actors. – for example, while nixon is famous for a dreadful magnitude of transparency of the involuntary type, nothing nixon ever did can compare for abject idiocy, with dubya sitting still, just awaiting orders, after the 9-11 hijacking took an unexpected direction. – what other possible way will that ever be interpreted? – was this entrancement perhaps, as implied in entry 41, a quizzical watch to see if the theory of gravity (with its jury still out) would bear fruit? – okay, maybe dubya was a bit slow on the more scientary topics, but as the pet goat episode demonstrates, at least the boy was trying.

  44. capt says:

    #46,

The GOP should have gotten Frank Langela to play the president – he was a better Nixon than tricky Dick.

(Watched Frost/Nixon this weekend GREAT movie – better than I expected)

  45. Good morning, fellow bloggonists!

Someone’s got a case of the mundays.. ;->

  46. capt says:

I nominate Norm Coleman to be dropped into the middle of the jungle?

    I mena – if Blago can’t go …

Maybe Norm could just “get lost!”

  47. trojanrabbit says:

Back again. Now I twiddle my thumbs for 90 minutes or so.

  48. Dan The Man says:

    Good Morning Everyone!

Happy Birthday Jack Klugman (87) and Casey Kasem (77)

    RIP Bea Arthur.

Is anyone besides me surprised that self-described conservative Mary Tyler Moore (said she would have campaigned for Grampy McInsane if asked) is going to be on Mama’s show Tuesday?

  49. flombaye says:

capt, just brief your grandkids well on how these norm coleman tactics began way back in the obama days.

  50. Hiya, Bloggoes!

Yo to capt for the Buster Poindexter shoutout. I loves me some David Jo!

  51. flombaye says:

51: is it really so surprising after what the ottoman empire did to penis van lesbian?

  52. mel7190 says:

49 He’s unemployed right now so he might as well go and stop wasting tax payer money just to deprive his state of representation.

  53. 51 — Dan — Mama has had conservatives on the show before. Remember — she’s a happy clappy liberal. And why wouldn’t she have MTM on? She may be conservative, but she’s also a lib/feminist icon whether you like it or not.

  54. MTM, like me, has diabetes. She may be pretty happy with Obama and his support of cell research, well, research in general, and science.

President Obama is currently speaking at National Association of Sciences college..

  55. capt says:

    #53,

I totally have the “hot hot hot” earworm working on my brain this morning.

David Jo is a talented dude – so many ways – and funny with some flavin!

  56. capt says:

    #57,

Love the Cure! (even if I don’t have an illness!)

  57. Repubs voted against preps for pandemics? Of course!

dKOS has a blog going for renaming the Republican Party (seeing as how they want to vote to rename the Democratic Party to the Socialistic Democrat Party), which had well over 700 responses late last night.

    I suggested Grouchy Old Perverts..

  58. capt says:

    Grandios obsolete punks?

    They are so over . . .

  59. #60

now I’m gonna be singing The Cure to myself all day.

  60. mel7190 says:

61 What a complete lack of concern for their fellow man!

  61. Tell me I’m wrong, but I believe the Republicans have long since adopted very short term thinking, pursuing only maximum early profits. No investments that won’t yield immediately..

    Greed Overtly Personified.

  62. #64

…not to mention themselves and their own kin.

  63. mel7190 says:

My son is in preschool and he has asthma and food allergies. He’s been hospitalized 3 times for asthma-related pnemonia. The swine flu thing is scary for him particularly because of these issues. Is heat greater risk? Who knows? Obviously the media sensationalizes these things, but it’s hard not to worry about it.

  64. mel7190 says:

67 I think they believe their money will save them – no entirely untrue. visions of “mask of the red death”

  65. All those complaints about government spending, when it involves investments into public assets: air, water, transportation, health, education, etc. If it’s not further enriching the rich, the government shouldn’t be spending the money!

  66. “You’re the only human everyone’s an alien
    “Save you, save you”
    –Rudimentary Peni

  67. 71 — because spending on the rich benefits us all. Every Reaganite knows that.

  68. I thought Bill Mahr’s comments about “trickle down economics” suggesting that the wealthy were pissing on the rest of us were right on.

  69. capt says:

    #74,

    See #8 – JINX!

  70. capt says:

    #76,

If we hang the wealthy from their feet will the $$$ trickle down faster?

    Hmmmmmm

  71. YES mel7190 it is … I have asthma and seem to pick up everything and it takes me 4 times as long to recover from any thing (I’ve had pneumonia twice this year and have had the pneumonia vaccination)

  72. capt says:

    The GOP has Seoul?

That could be trouble. . .

    *skates*

  73. mel7190 says:

74 & 75 I hope that this flu turns out to be nothing because I wouldn’t wish for something so tragic, but that being said, we need to scream from the rooftops that the GOP doesn’t give a crap about people!

  74. capt says:

I had the pneumonia vaccination – years ago – haven’t had it since.

    (lucky me)

I was getting it once every two years with some regularity before I was vaccinated.

I am lucky not to have asthma – that might be the major difference.

  75. 81 — GOP is the party of every man for himself. And by that I mean white upper class protestant man.

  76. mel7190 says:

79 I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you and my son, Cindy, as well as everyone who is at greater risk. My son has been doing well since he started Singulair about a year ago. He’s also on flovent. I’ve asked about the pnemonia vaccine, but they’ve never given it to him. He can’t get the flu shot because of an egg allergy. It’s scary and it’s particularly bad right now considering the economy.

  77. trojanrabbit says:

    It’s OK capt.

    The heel has no soul.

  78. Remember when bazillions of chickens were killed in China and elsewhere to avert the bird flu pandemic? Thanks to the actions of the CDC and other organizations, a pandemic was avoided. Consequently, bird flu is frequently scoffed at as a serious threat..

I smell similar simplistic and stupid sentiments about swine flu.

  79. flombaye says:

MCCAIN: lets not bicker and argue about ooh killed ooh!

  80. mel7190 says:

88 From what I’ve seen, part of the reason for the concern about this particular flu is that it’s a combination of several swine flu, human flu AND bird flu which they’ve never seen before AND it appears to be passing easily between people.

  81. Cindy, I don’t know how to do the cool thing you are doing with the headlines, but here is a link to Krugman’s “Money for Nothing” article in NYT today: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/opinion/27krugman.html?_r=1&th&emc=th

  82. Dan Kaufman says:

Although the soldiers were following orders at Abu Ghraib, doesn’t mean that they should be let off. It just means that the higher ups should be prosecuted as well and should receive harsher penalties.

Following orders is not a valid defense for torture.

  83. 90 — doomsday bug! somebody call Dustin Hoffman!

  84. SueC says:

Happy Mundee All! We’re enjoying a big ol’ thunderstorm here in Dallas this am! I’m off work today and meeting up with some old friends for lunch later—re-connecting, since I just moved back here from Seattle a coupla months ago.

    Lovin’ the blog this morning…

  85. ON twitter I’m following Roland Hedley. Funny as heck, and from him I found out that the sitch in Afghanistan is much more serious than they’re letting on in the mainstream media. Ann Curry at NBC was just over there, and she seems to be in some distress about it, has also twittered about things being dire there, but has not said any such thing in the reporst she did from there.

  86. mel7190 says:

    mexico city is closed. scary!!

  87. SueC says:

Whoa–this swine flu sounds pretty scary. I remember a swine flu outbreak in the past–decades ago? Can’t remember when.

  88. SueC says:

oh hey–they’re talking about Shano again! What a celeb:-)

  89. Cough cough splutter says:

If the Spanish flu outbreak occurred today (still H1N1 variety as is now in Mx) the world wide death toll would be 340 million. This is based on the same 5% death rate as the 1918 pandemic.

  90. mel7190 says:

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-maher24-2009apr24,0,927819.story The Bill Maher article they just mentioned. I love Bill!

  91. Incubation for this flu is 48 hours. He’s been back from there for over a week. Obama doesn’t have the new flu.

  92. SueC says:

#100 Yes–Mexico City closed! Yikes. And Obama just there—Yikes again.

  93. SueC says:

    #109–Good to Know, thanks.

    #107–Bill Maher is awesome.

  94. Dan The Man says:

Rod Steiger suffered from depression. He was also a married man when he asked Stephanie “out”.

  95. mel7190 says:

109 I guess someone the Prez came in contact with (maybe translator?) died soon after his visit, but they said it was from a preexisting condition. I’m certain Obama is getting the best healthcare in the world!
    110. They said it’s being discussed. A correspondent from CNN or something was there and said the streets are already empty.

  96. BerryinCleveland says:

Happy Mundee! I took today off and then almost forgot to even listen to poor Mama. I hope she forgives me.

  97. Dan The Man says:

I remember the Hong Kong Flu outbreak in the late 60s. My 7th grade teacher got it and she was out of commission for most at least 1/4 of the school year.

  98. perogis(sp?) are basically the same thing as potstickers

  100. Steubenvill doesn’t exist?

    I KNEW IT! HEY DEAN!!!

  101. Judy Mandel says:

This is not on any subject but I hear MSNBC is doing poll on Obama’s 100 days and they are getting flooded with “F”s. The link I got did not have a way to vote just gave results. Help!

  102. Omali says:

Does anyone else miss the days where the worst thing you had to worry about while traveling to Mexico was to boil the water before you drank it?

Montezuma, you’ve been one upped by the gangs and swines.

  103. mel7190 says:

131 Yes, freepers are going after the poll since last week.

  104. The screaming and gnashing of teeth from the Repubs over the release of torture memos tells you that they were complacent about it. And they clearly have something hanging out which might get chopped off by the Axe of Justice.

  105. Isn’t it fascinating to watch the Repubs desperately trying to justify torture?

  106. 138 — I’m not fascinated, I’m disgusted. Seriously. What’s wrong with these people?

  107. capt says:

On the MSNBC poll – once you have voted it will only show the results.

  108. well I’m buying a whole bunch of Purell for my kids school

    *hugs*

  115. Dan The Man says:

Is EVERYTHING that comes out of Bill O’Liely’s mouth total bullshit?

  116. Bill O’Reilly, another idiot who endorses torture..

  117. yeah chaotic Pakistan — throw that in to your word salad bill

  118. he’s only expressing regret because he’s in danger now

  130. capt says:

What do you think he is missing?

  131. capt says:

Must be that “rugged individualism” they keep spewing about.

That is what they call child abuse nowadays?

  132. EW278 says:

Can we just arrest all of the GOP for teason?

  133. Skyhawk says:

“That is what they call child abuse nowadays?”

    That or “tough love”.

  134. capt says:

Republicans want you to die – if you’re a democrat, liberal or “con” Obama supporter.

They know GAWD will save them – and if GAWD doesn’t save them then death was GAWDs will.

GAWD is a perfect scapegoat in every way.

  135. Skyhawk says:

    Are there rethug vaccinations?

  136. capt says:

    Are there rethug vaccinations?

Flesh eating bacteria have no vaccination – I assmue the rethug is the same same.

  137. Michelle aka boofdah says:

@ 173–they just want the pasty-white-faced, straight, wealthy or upper-middle-class ones to live. Their lack of social policies and evisceration of the middle and lower classes is their way of “ethnic cleansing” and eugenics. It’s sick, truly.

  138. capt says:

    #177,

Truly sick and clearly evil – IMO

  139. The regional government in NWFP maintained the security forces were not carrying out any major operation.

“They are only retaliating to the Taliban strikes on security agencies,” said provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain.

“If the other side (Taliban) don’t do anything, there will be no action from our side,” he said.

The security situation in the region deteriorated last week when militants from the restive Swat district took control of adjoining Buner district, just 100 km from the capital Islamabad.

Though the insurgents later announced a withdrawal, authorities and locals in Buner say scores of militants, including some Al Qaeda fighters, were still present in the district.

Western pressure has mounted on Islamabad to act against the Taliban, who have refused to disarm as agreed under the peace pact.

Pakistan remains indecisive on whether to go all out against the Taliban, who pose a great threat to the country’s stability.

A Taliban spokesman vowed to spread their influence across the country as he condemned the Lower Dir operation.

“The more they try to press us, the more we will spread in Pakistan, and one day we will touch the last corner of Pakistan,” said Muslim Khan.

“Everyone in Pakistan needs our ideology,” he said.

  142. 19. Jesselyn Radack was right; still waiting for an apology

The more we have learned about the Bush Administration’s illegal torture program, the more it is obvious that former whistleblower Jesselyn Radack was set up and made into a scapegoat.

I am calling on Attorney General Eric Holder to restore her job and to apologize for the previous administration’s treatment of her. While I personally don’t know Radack, I regularly read her diaries here on DK and I am convinced that we need people like her in our government to watch the Bush moles that have burrowed their way into crafting legal policy in the Obama Administration.

It has ALWAYS been illegal – the OLC memos don’t make law.

  145. Check the Web link in my response for Bill Maher’s op-ed in the LA Times. It’s a good one, but repeats a lot of the points he made in his final “New Rules” segment on Real Time on HBO this past weekend. :)

  153. my nephew flew in from Pakistan in 2007 – he was 16 at the time.

He was held by ICE/DHS over night in NYC before he could go one to CA for a WEDDING.

He and my sister-in-law who was also stuck in NYC waiting for her son to be release (they didn’t realize that we were 6 hours away and should have been called) – they missed their flight to CA because he was held

my nephew was scared to death that DHS was going to send him to gitmo and torture him …. my sister-in-law was beside herself.

fortunately when he (and another family member) were released they flew to CA and really enjoyed that visit … but for my nephew that experience was enough

  154. Skyhawk says:

The thing to keep in when debating torture:

    Is there a safe word?
Computer says no. : evil :
    Then it’s torture.

    Is there a safe word?
    Computer says yes. : – D
    Then it’s not torture.

  155. Skyhawk says:

The thing to keep in “mind” that is.

Hi, Cindy! Love the Anti-Pirate Astroglide Cannon! Hi Capt, Kar, Sue and all the regulars and irregulars!

Typical Manic Monday, I’m able to listen but not contribute much :-(

Why don’t we all just quit calling it the swine flu, which implies that filthy pigs wallowing in the mud have infected our tidy little selves, and call it what it is: the factory farm flu, in which horribly overcrowded pigs raised by overcrowded, underpaid humans recycle microorganisms (poo) rapidly enough to genetically foster virulence.

  184. SueC says:

223–right, i was thinking the same thing! Maybe more of us should be eating the soy-bacon right about now, eh??

  185. 226 — I think he was referring to Slumdog Millionaire. I’ve seen bits & peices of them. They’re surreal by our standards, but kinda cool, really. Long, with lots of musical numbers, usually.

  186. 2 US lawmakers, others arrested at Darfur protest

Getting even the regular flu can be horrible. 10 days of feeling like crap. Then if you get a secondary bacterial infection on top of that you have to go to your doctor and argue that you really do need an antibiotic now—that it’s not just a virus anymore.
