Obama said it will be up to Attorney General Eric Holder to decide whether or not to prosecute the former officials.
• President Obama’s national intelligence director Dennis Blair said in a memo to staff last night that Bush-era interrogation methods may have yielded important information about terrorists and may have provided a deeper understanding of Al Qaida, but he said that we do not need these techniques to keep America safe.
• Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner testified before Congress yesterday, defending President Obama’s bank bailout, answering questions about TARP’s transparency and Obama’s plan to encourage private investors to help banks get rid of troubled assets.

Good morning Mama, Mooks and mookettes!
Good Morning Capt!
Listening to yesterday’s podcast…GO Shano! Let’s hear it for Miss CA and ‘opposite marriage’…huh???
Shane-O ROCKS!
How cool is it to have such talented people share their art and chat on the blog!
Morning SueC!
From Huffpo:
Conyers On Bush Admin Lawyers: ‘We’re Coming After These Guys’
*****
Conyers!
*swoon*
It is awesome to share the bog with such talented and VERY smart people! I haven’t read the Conyers piece on huffpo…so thanks for the heads up. Conyers is great—definitely one of the smartest boys in class!
#6–I mean, ‘blog’, not ‘bog’…
Hi capt! Mornin’ Sue!
It is a bit of a bog, too, Sue.
The blog bog!
I like it!
Good morning Carol!
Whoop’s here is a working link to the Conyers piece at huffpo:
As Report Shows Bybee’s Torture Culpability, Conyers Says: ‘We’re Coming After These Guys’
(if I did it right this time)
Rep Conyers is back after his “scandel”. I’m sure the righties were after him, big time. Something about an apartment, and taxes, I forget.
No little boys, no toilet stalls. Not even any diapers involved.
“We’re coming after these guys”. He is awesome.
It sure seems like Obama is listening.
I think I like that. Of course I hate it when I don’t agree but . . .
Conyers is one of the good guys – I have almost always agreed with his point of view on things.
Russ Feingold has been on point too.
There are a few politicians that I don’t totally despise.
capt, I think we got it figured out here at the SMS blog….Obama is taking his time to set the stage and gather political cover.
Wonder if Cheney/Rove/etc hear the drum beat.
Wonder how the arrests will go down.
Wouldn’t it be great if they are caught on camera?
Best TV EVER!!
Hi Carol:-)
Welcome to the morning bog…
We all look better with a little mist around.

#19,
Some of these politicians will play “chicken” with the economy – I hope the economy doesn’t hurt them worse than it already has.
UGH!
Rick Warren’s Wiki paged locked to prevent whitewash re: Prop 8
[snip]
Wev Wiki’s whitewashing wesulted in warranted wecourse.
HA HA HA! or just HA HA! He can’t pretend to change his story or history! The Rev. Homophobe has been outed!
These politicians who say they don’t want the stimulus $$ are a bunch of maroons—they’re just blustering for the cameras. Look at the gov of my state—Perry of TX–talking about seceding from the union at one of the teabaggers parties. What a maroon (it bears repeating)!
Sean Penn, handsome and smart:

Capt–you made me laugh out loud! I think Obama made an error by having Wev Warren at the inauguration—I believe in reaching out, but pleeez!
Hi DeLiRon!
#14–I totally agree about Obama taking his time to get it right.
Cheney is so irrelevant now…
Seriously, my sister works at Saddleback Church and even she thought it was not the best idea. She is a conservative and a GOPher but she says she has been completely fed up with the Rev. saying “it’s Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve” (Warrens favorite line about marriage)
My sis is a psychologist and has a few clients who live the issue and I think she “gets it”.
#23 Yes, Sean Penn is Awesome. Hot and smart–what a combo! teehee
Sean Penn?
We watched MILK a few days ago and thought the Academy Award was right on!
He earned it – great acting. I was impressed.
Good morning DeLiRon!!!!
(lookin’ good!) How do you do it?
Oh yeah, and I like Sean’s political activism too!
Gotta go to work. You are all the smartest kids in class:-)
SueC has to go?
We’ll miss ya – hurry back as soon as you are able.
Thanks for a great start to my day.
Maybe the Obama invitation to Rick Warren is when the anti-gay marriage crowd jumped the shark.
MILK was awesome. One of few movies I have seen lately and I watched it right on my computer. (having rented it through iTunes.)
Thanks for stopping in Sue…hope to read ya tomorrow!
Milk was good on so many fronts – not just Sean but the writing and acting across the board. We did PPV – it was worth every penny.

Happy Earth Day, all. I wrote a little piece on how to make green by going green. If you’re interested, check out my blog.
Making Green by Going Green
It is a cloudy, dreary, gray Earth day here in DC. But we had a brief flash of sunshine. It kind of sounds like the situation we’re in economically and environmentally.
By the way, folks, did you realize you can compost a lot of your food waste and thus reduce the amount of waste you generate? Think about all the coffee grounds, banana peels, watermelon rinds, orange peels, apple cores, and other things you toss in the garbage. Compost it instead!
Mornin’ All. Happy Earth Day!! Rode my bike to work in the rain. Yay Me!!!!!

A beautiful earth day here – low of about 50f overnight highs near 80f by late afternoon.
Compost! YES! AND recycle.
Our city is changing our trash cans – making them smaller and promoting recycling to make up the difference.
There’s only one way to get the truth from Bush administration officials. Torture. Since it’s both legal and effective, according to them, we’ll get to the truth in no time.

1. CNN Clip: Tapping Into Tea Party Anger While Debunking Right-Wing Myths
we have got to get off this fixation on torture. there are bigger fish to fry! Especially given the typical American, who thinks torture works and that life is 24.
It’s a losing proposition politically and it is not going to get a single American a job or get one American health insurance!
Remember how the moveon.org guys started? Censure and move on? That’s what we need to do with torture. We need to get over it!
I swear, torture, if we keep up our obsession over it, is going to be the progressive version of Monica Lewinsky.
Gooood morning all.
One of those days at work this week.
Not enough blogging makes the Rabbit very unhappy.
10-4 good buddy.
I wonder if it would take 183 waterboardings to get to the truth from Bush and Cheney?
Still can’t figure out where our usual, beautiful “DC Spring” went this year. And who replaced it with this cold, clammy “Boston Spring” that we got instead.
#71
it would take twice that.
71
I honestly don’t think Cheney would survive the first. His “heart” would short out.
#73,
I bet a youtube of THAT would go viral! (in a heartbeat!)
#71. Those wussies??? They’d start singing as soon as they SAW the waterboard.
Rahm is just COS not the boss.
OMG the tooly boys are a little worried about WHAT?
72
Boston spring?
I’ll have you know it’s supposed to be in the 80′s this weekend.
#78 Same here. See? We’re getting the same weather. I lived in Beantown for 17 years so I know what spring there usually entails; gray, rainy, muddy, cold until one day BANG!!! it’s 90 degrees. Then it’s summer.
69
Sorry.
If we don’t nail them now, they WILL come back to haunt us later.
Who do you think Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the rest got their start under?
But you know what, those little bad apples will live among us. Often torture is done by sadists, and it seems when you read how many times torture was done, sadists were in charge.
Sadism is not something that is put away in a drawer once the torture stops state sponsored torture. The fact that these little guys/gals will be living among us is scary.
Spring has sprung
The grass is ris
I wonder where the flowers is?
Cheney and Rumsfeld will likely be dead in a second Obama administration, if he gets one!
What is too difficult to understand about torture prosecutions being a losing proposition politically?
You get one of those jokers up there saying, we did it to keep America safe and I guarantee you one person on a jury will get images of 24 in his head and vote to acquit.
What good will that do?
Let’s not underestimate Obama. There’s no confusion about the torture people or disorganization here.
Obama just re-established the authority of the Attorney General and the Justice Department as an independent, non-political body that isn’t answerable to the president, while maintaining his own ability to say he’s looking forward and not looking back.
Rahm’s comments started the process of re-establishing the independence of the Justice Department, and Obama’s comments closed the circle. Now Holder can prosecute the miscreants, and Obama can still claim to be looking forward.
Have we not learned the lesson the campaign that this guy is three chess moves ahead of the opposition?
69, there is no more important issue than punishing torturers.
It would be WAY too easy for OLC lawyers to just write this or that and say everything is all legal – that would allow any president to do vitually anything to anybody – just get the OLC to say it is okay?
We have to address that issue and the very minimum or open the door to future abuses.
IMO
Oh, and I give it 24 hours before Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity turn the suicide of the acting head of Freddie Mac into this administration’s Vince Foster. You heard it here first.
Lets not forget that yesterday the NY Times ran an article which detailed some transcripts of illegal wiretaps of Democratic Congressional leaders.
In interviews on NPR yesterday there was some discussion about the content of the leaks, but the question was asked over and over again about how exactly an illegal wiretap happened to a congressioanl leader (a couple of years ago).
This is huge and yet another wheel coming off the right wing wagon.
2. Police investigating death of Freddie Mac official
The people who ordered the torture need to go to prison. Waterboarding is bad enough. But forcing detainees to watch episodes of Steph’s late night talk show is inhuman.
#84,
I have a bunch of good faith in Barack and his political skills.
He is doing all of this in the middle of a financial meltdown and all of the other things?
So far – I’d say he is doing better than I had hoped or could have expected.
Gobama!
Good morning, fine folk. Sorry I’m late, what’s been happening?
I see the Freddie Mac CEO has apparently commited suicide..
And I see Mr. Cheney has been involved in some more heavy Preemptive CYA; meanwhile I’m starting to see that Obama is smart like a fox – he’s wisely recognizing that the Justice Department will be responsible for going after the torture crimes.
Unlike some, I don’t believe that our “obsession with torture” will turn into something equivalent to a progressive Monica Lewinsky incident. That’s simply a ludicrous comparison. Torture is a WAR CRIME, it must be owned up to and dealt with if this country is to reclaim the high moral ground.
As I said, Cheney has been laying Preemptive CYA. The miserable bastard may end up having to move to Dubai before it’s all over.
Cow flatulence is a major cause of global warming. Because it comes from cows doesn’t make it natural or OK. Its a problem because humans have bred so many cows. Unfortunately, I can’t give up cheese.

With Hillary Clinton driving the get away car this time. I think Bill Clinton was behind the wheel the last time.
Lets move forward. Forward to when Steph gets drunk and leaves Max tied to a tree somewhere during the wag-n-walk.
We should allow torture because there are a few morons who think 24 is real? We should make policy because of a TV show that was created to promote torture? I’m sure there are some morons who think Star Trek is real, does that mean we should try to attack the Klingons?
Cow flatulence does have CO2, but is mostly methane.. Methane IS a powerful greenhouse gas; in fact one of the hazards of global warming is ocean warming, which may release massive amounts of it from the frozen deposits on the ocean floor; sort of a regenerative effect.
#92 I’m really surprised Cheney isn’t in Dubai ALREADY!!! And that GDub isn’t in Central America somewhere.
97…that’s the way the repuglican mind works…remember Danny Quayle wanted to debate Murphy Brown…
wow .. green960 is doing a better job tracking the show than producer_chris

Even if the torture investigations yield NO convictions, it must proceed, we cannot ignore crime because it might not get a conviction.
After all, this IS the United States, no matter how low it was dragged by the Bush Administration’s pack of liars and thieves.
The vigorous prosecution of those involved in torture needs to be done because it’s the RIGHT thing to do, whether or not it’s politically expedient.
And (83) yeah, Cheney and Rumsfeld may not be long for this world, but there are surely Darth Vaders in waiting, having graduated from the likes of Liberty “University” and are now poisoning the legal system. The cancer needs to be surgically removed now, before it’s too late.
so…. based on cheney’s allegation that waterboarding works as a method of sourcing info, is cheney trying to instigate waterboarding of cheney and perle to launch an actual investigation of 9-11? – - – or do we just wait around for the full nine months? – what an odd shift in position from shooting the guy who said they had perhaps been too sloppy….
what a weird anniversary….
Andrew Sullivan! Thank you, sir.
#98,
RE: Cow farts
We have to remember that cows are converting organically. So the greenhouse gasses are being converted from grass that stored it THIS season.
Coal, oil and natural gas is converting inorganically stored greenhouse gasses from many years ago.
Kinda like comparing apples to rocks.
There is no more important issue than prosecuting those who tortured? Are you serious?
Tell that to the 600K plus people who lost their jobs last week. Ask them if they think that prosecutions for torture are the most important thing. Tell that to those who are about to lose their houses after they lost their jobs. Tell that to those who are going to lose their health insurance because they can’t find work.
Ask them what they think about torture.
You have got to be kidding me.
This is our Monica Lewinsky.
106: isaac newton said they feel about the same after a while.
I’ll make a rash prediction:
Near the end of Obama’s second term we will STILL be cleaning up after the Busheney debacle.
(not a high risk prediction)
Tell me I’m definitely wrong in believing that Cheney would delight in another 9/11 type attack on our country, simply to vindicate him (in his mind). Tell me I’m wrong.
I believe there is a special corner of Hell reserved for Cheney and many of his compadres from the Bush Administration and the corruption of the Congress which supported them.
Good buddy, everymorning! Last week we discussed on the blog, and Jim mentioned, McCain’s statement that his torture by the NVA resulted in his disclosing the defensive line-up of the Green Bay Packers–i.e. torture yields bad, faked information.
Here’s a link I found to some actual….what’s the word…journalism on that story:

Tony, with all due respect: BULLSHIT.
The loss of jobs last week and next week will not be affected by ignoring war crimes of the Bush Administration.
“Tell me I’m wrong.”
You’re Wrong! (not because I think you’re wrong but you said “tell me”)
I try to do as I’m told. (you’re not wrong – not one bit)
#107
I think most of those people would say, torture isn’t the kind of behavior that parents want to pass on to their kids.
It’d be nice if we all had a job, but the world needs to put aright… torture must be addressed properly so that people can resume trying to get work and raise their children in a world that makes sense.

There IS a special corner of Hell that Cheney resides over.
It’s called Halliburton.

107, liberty is far more important than employment or health care. Prosecution of those who tortured and imprisoned people without trials will help restore the liberty the Constitution was intended to create. If we allow war criminals like this to go free, then we are one of the bad countries. That would make us evil.
Humanity is suppose to be humane.
Torture is inhumane so it is contrary to civil existence.
Job and the economy are a different cup of tea. (made from different teabags?)
And Tony, what’s wrong with Jimmy Carter> He was a poor President due to weak leadership, however, unlike the bulk of the corrupt Republican thugs who have been running this country, Carter is a FINE human being. Carter has SOME integrity left. I have difficulty identifying fine human beings left in the Republican Party and particularly the Bush Administration.
Ignoring corruption and crime in the Bush Administration is not just stupid, it is legally and morally WRONG.
Not this crap again. Even if torture worked 100% of the time, it doesn’t matter. It’s torture! It’s wrong!
Justice Dept can handle the prosecutions. We don’t need them as much to fix the economy.
Or are you saying the government can’t multitask?
my thursday bad mood has been transplanted to today ….
106, that would be true if they were outputing CO2. The problem is the methane. Methane is a much worse greenhouse gas than CO2.
127
Besides, I had the bad mood first.
Bad moods are organic – so IAG!
If the mood is bad enough – the only way is up!
Here – I’ll dance the good mood dance for all of you all:
*dancing*
Peace out cubbie scouts. Happy Earth day!

churches = church’s

Paul are you saying bad moods today are a Massachusetts thing?
#132
flowers are pleasant even if you’re in a gloomy mood. I think it was a nice gesture.
unless she has raging allergies?
135
Could be. Or just an Eastern MA thing.
#128,
Still the methane is made from this seasons grasses?
That is the point – cows are converting organically.
When we dig up oil or coal we are releasing gasses from hydrocarbons which were trapped thousands of years ago thereby introducing greenhouse gasses not part of the organic cycle.
Apples versus rock.
no Paul – it’s not that, that is making me in a bad mood
I stated quite clearly to my parents why I was having none of that
I’m in a bad mood because my sons are being #$%@****!@#$%^&*
*spins around and falls down*
gets up
*dancing the good mood dance*
Come on now – I know some of you are smiling – how’s ’bout a giggle?
One caller said AAR and Jones programs dropped in hr 1. Caller wrong. went to 1310 wdtw web site. They run Montel Williams instead of Steph in east coast timeslot. Montel Williams replaced Lionel by air america April 6. Clear Channel hasn’t dropped progressive talk programs in Detroit like they did April 3 on WINZ 940 Miami and Red Zebra (bought station from Clear Channel as part of deal to get stronger signal stations in short term for Redskins football games) did in Wash DC Feb 9. Red Zebra started by Redskins owner Dan Snyder because no DC area radio station would meet his rights fee demands when 106.7FM WJFK contract ran out after the 2005 season. 2006 any night games were essentially off radio because of bad signals. I haven’t stopped wishing a bad season on the Redskins yet like a 10 win 6 loss record but not making the playoffs. That hurts more than a 4 win 12 loss record.
no my cousin is a raging right wing american exceptionalism chirsitanist (we stopped speaking months ago) and I refuse to support her church

I picked a bad week to give up hating the Bush Administration.. Sorry.
Six doctor visits still scheduled before April is done, including a 20 minute hospital visit for a “surgery” (out patient) on an ulcer on my foot. Have healed several with skin grafts, but this one is deeper. So, I’m having some pain, and financial pain and waiting room waiting pain scheduled.
And here I am, whining about it on the internet, my apologies to everyone for being an Old Man and bitching so much. I’m living better than 90% of the planet, and I whine.. Pathetic.
#140
I love your clowning. good show, capt!
*throws large puffy marshmallows*
I doubt a 9/11 type commission is the answer to a balanced investigation.
142 You don’t have to give to the church. You could always give to another charity in his name and send them a card.
cuz I guess Obama ruined the Bush administration happy dance
It’s wrong to make fun of Sean Hannity for having no penis. He gave it to Ann Coulter, because excessive sex for drung made Ann’s penis drop off.
Ivan!
*hugs*
You can say anything here – we are all in your corner.
I will try to wish the pain away – maybe it will work for you – my dental issues have been doggin me for weeks no matter how much I wish otherwise.
139
OK
My bad mood is from every little thing going wrong this morning, from my wife being angry because the internet is out at home (and I fear it’s the router going byebye) to spending what time I would have spent here before the show
trying to fix the mess that was left in the shielded chamber last night, the antenna was bent and the antenna tower was moved. It has to be exactly in the right position, or things won’t work.
I’m STILL waiting for my test subject and I know how screwed up the rest of the week is going to be now, this throws the schedule all out of whack.
#142
if the bridge is already burned you could donate to Planned Parenthood in her name, and send her a card about it.
149 I sent flowers because what religious institution I’d send the money to in his name would cause her head to explode. (hint, it would be a mosque)
I also said that if she designated a cancer charity I’d have been happy to do that .. the church thing just rubbed me the wrong way.
58
Tony in DC. Glad to read someone else from DC here. I listen on xm167 and KTNF internet stream as well as podcast. Good compost tip. What if one lives in an apt with no yard for compost pile? Answered my own question: Throw out window or put waste in plastic bag (holds scent in) and give to someone with a yard.
Steph slays me: “and ours is the nice kind, like a water slide?”
138, if the grasses just burned and produced CO2 that would be recaptured by next year’s grass and that would be fine, but next year’s grass won’t recapture methane. Also, there is already a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere so the wavelength that CO2 blocks is already mostly blocked, more CO2 can only do so much damage, but there is not that much methane. Methane can do much more damage because there is more damage to be done at that wavelength.
I’ve got to go. I’ve got a meeting at 9 and I have to get a shower.
“you could donate to Planned Parenthood in her name”
I did that in Palin’s name.
They sent her a “thank you” card.
Still waiting to hear from her but I doubt she’ll ever thank me personally.
(eating marshmallow – are these sweet fluffy things actually from a marsh? Mmmmmmm)
you don’t know if they steal again .. if they are poor and hungry they steal again … they just may not get caught
That moron caller misses the whole point of SERE training. SERE training is to prepare our soldiers for what the freaking Communist Chinese will do to them. By making the excuse “well, we do that in POW training” normalizes Communist techniques and makes them American techniques.
Seems to me that makes the right wingers the same as communists.
#158,
I guess I stand corrected. Oil and coal are the same as cow farts – if you say so!
Capt,
I reach on dental pain, it’s the worst. I hope you have a good dentist.
“Shall we drink to our legs?” (Jaws reference)
#159
“…are these sweet fluffy things actually from a marsh?”
I believe they actually grow on trees… in marshes.
155 I don’t blame you at all. I’ve seen lots of requests of donations to charities – usually one having to do with the cause of death, but never a request for funds for a church. It seems inappropriate.
capt no
marshmallows are a sugar treat named for an ancient treat from Egypt that was made from marsh mallows(a plant) – the mallow plant is endangered and no rare. Our marshmallows were/are much like the anciet marsh mallow treat.
#138, the problem with methane is that it’s a far stronger greenhouse gas than CO2; similarly, it has to break down abiotically, whereas CO2 from organic sources is sequestered again by those same biotic processes in steady state.
so torture interrogators are like people at a one armed bandits.
#163,
Actually – the pain has been dealt with – the good dentist has solved some fairly bad problems. Most all of them – all my fault for neglecting the teeth.
UGH!
Thanks and CHEERS we shall drink to our legs!
One of the engineers had an LCD monitor in one of the unused cubicles yesterday and somehow it “disappeared” last night. Lots of things seem to be sprouting legs around here. I blamed it on the Underpants Gnomes. Our scheduler started laughing hysterically, she never heard that term before.
Moron caller, that’s why we have the law. The law is the cover we can use when people demand “why don’t you do EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER!”.
NO NO NO
I will never demand torture . . . after 9/11 I didn’t want torture, even when asked about the ticking time bomb senario
Mooks funny! Say….if we haven’t actually held Obama’s birth certificate in our hands, was he ever…actually…BORN??
Mmmmm either way these things are SWEET!
*drifting into diabetic coma*
#1 It doesn’t matter if “torture works!” since it is ILLEGAL! ILLEGAL in our country and internationally due to laws WE HELPED WRITE!
#2 There is NO PROOF that torture works! In fact, most experts say it does not.
#3 There is something very VERY sick about all these people defending torture. I think they should be forced to sit and watch what torture really looks like because clearly they are not thinking clearly.
“Underpants Gnomes”
Fairly common gnomenclature for things sprouting legs . . .
#172
I was on that same page as you, back then, as today.
Torture = the domain of tyrants and the Inquisition.
173
I still get junque email from RWNJ groups asking for $$ because they are filing suit in every state to have “Barack Hussein Obama” removed as President because there’s no official birth certificate.
“I think they should be forced to sit and watch what torture really looks like because clearly they are not thinking clearly.”
Some of them have seen the torture porn and they liked it.
Those are the ones we need to weed out.
mel7190
it seemed inappropriate to me also. She such an anti anybody else unless they totally conform to her view of america that donating to a mosque in his name would have made his head explode (because she believes Muslims are the 5th column) and frankly I didn’t want her to give an ear full to my parents.
A Hindu temple wouldn’t have had the same effect.

lmao!
What good came out of torture? I bet it gave some right-wing sadists more than a few raging orgasms.
Let’s waterboard Ari Fleischer, and everybody who supports torture. Then ask them if they still thinks okay.
180 Intolerance is always fun to deal with! LOL I know the type. She’s a republican, right? LOL
What good came out of torture? I bet it gave some right-wing sadists more than a few raging orgasms.

Those tapes weren’t destroyed. They’re in Karl Rove’s bedroom.
Liberal Hussein – wouldn’t work because they know they wouldn’t be allowed to come close to death … those we tortured had no such knowledge
The fact that they made and destroyed tapes instead of DVD’s makes me think – they destroyed the “tapes” but not the DVD’s.
They play that kind of word games.
The link is for an NPR report that shows in 1968 a US soldier who’s picture was featured on the cover of The Washington Post waterboarding a Vietcong soldier was later court-marshaled for doing it.
In 1983 TX sheriff James Parker and three deputies were sent to prison for four years for waterboarding a suspect in the jail.

torture makes for great entertainment. countless horror films are based upon the Inquisition, let alone the Saw and Hostel films!
Roman period films/ tv shows depict the practice (such as HBO series “Rome”).
there’s also that show called “24″
that said, when done in real life it loses its Hollywood glamour and reveals the ugly human nature behind it.
187
We could “accidentally” screw up with one of them and go a bit too far.
I hate myself for thinking that.
#184 ask them if they think it’s okay when they’re behind bars for all the crimes they confess to.
#187 not true – everyone breaks under waterboarding, even SERE students who know they won’t be killed.
Does the late head of Freddie Mac count as another suicide related to the bad economy?
The family found dead in Middletown, MD last week is now in that category. 400,000 in debt seems like a lot until you read that they had a house in Florida they couldn’t sell.
#178 Paul trojanrabbit, “junque email” sounds like an upgrade to the dross I get forwarded by people I genuinely love and respect who get mired in this stuff.
My latest technique is to politely respond, “That’s really interesting”, and link to or describe something intelligent, like Simon Johnson of MIT’s “Baseline Scenario” blog (my new favorite economics/bidness news resource):

I will never demand torture . . . after 9/11 I didn’t want torture, even when asked about the ticking time bomb senario

Absolutely. The more imminent the danger the less likely a detainee is likely to tell the truth under pressure. Time is on the prisoner’s side.
192 I’ll never understand the ability of people who consider themselves “Christians” to endorse horrible people like George Bush. Are they clueless? Hypocrites?
197
Well, I wouldn’t respond to the email because it’s from “Human Events”, home of Ann Coulter and Newt Gingrich.
Someone at work (surrounded by Right Wingers here) must have submitted my name.
Hello all, can’t stay, just dropped by to say hi.
It’s very tragic to hear another wealthy man killed himself over money last night. Very sad.
Arg! There must be a profile section… how do I get to it? There isn’t a manual for me to RTFM.
Liberal Hussein – wouldn’t work because they know they wouldn’t be allowed to come close to death … those we tortured had no such knowledge

Good point
did any one read “Shogun” by James Clavell
there’s a part in the book where one person who held the power(maybe the Shogun but I’m not sure) was masturbating to the sounds of the torturing of the sailors who landed on Japan’s shores
How was President Clinton able to keep us safe for eight years after the bombing of the Word Trade Center in 1993—without torturing people?
Killing someones children in front of them might work so we should use that for its effacy?
I’m pretty sure cutting off limbs (starting with fingers and toes) also works – should we do that?
Make no sense to me.
I am SO sick of hearing conservatives hide behind the argumet that lawyers “authorized” torture. It doesn’t matter that ideologue lawyers said it was okay to waterboard. We still hold people accountable for war crimes, even if a lawyer said it was okay. Look, the Nazis had lawyers…. lawyers who made the laws that seized property and jobs of jewish populations…. the point is, when you allow evil people to hide behind lawyers, it’s a short hop from torure to concentration camps. It’s that simple. And all civilized societies have agreed that no one can hide behind a lawyer to perpetrate war crimes.
(blinky blinky … rub eyes yawn) Hey Everyone!
196—I saw that article too. Whenever I hear of a house that won’t sell first I ask myself, did they drop the price to as low as it could go? Many homes won’t sell because the owners can’t bear to drop the price.
But that man had serious mental problems.
#199
mel,
I agree with you. How can someone read from their “Words of God” and then not only ignore them, but do the exact opposite? Subjugate neighbors, torment enemies, kill those who question the Christian theology…
#204
one has to wonder about the person who wrote that.
Clavell could be a sicko.
or maybe there was a valid artistic reason, or journalistic?
#211,
Maybe even an historical reference?
Sounds sick either way. EW!
207—lawyers have been known to say murder is OK. Remember the murder of Harvey Milk? His lawyers argued that the killer was on a sugar high and was therefore not entirely responsible for the murder.
So murder is OK if you’re hypoglycemic.
Hi all. New to this…real new! Wanted to thank Mama & the Mooks for turning me into the political NERD that I now am! Took our h.s. seniors to DC. Yesterday, during our tour of the Capitol, Nancy Pelosi walked by…very busy, very determined! Very tiny and adorable too. I went totally “rock star geek” and all I ended up with was a picture of the stinkin’ floor!! Also got to take them up to the House chamber and listen to a couple of resolutions. Only about a dozen representatives there, but provided me with another great geek out moment for my kids to remember me by! Next step? Get these kids to start listening to you, so they can become informed & productive citizens too! Many thanks!!! Love you guys–Plunk
#199 They’re just lazy. For example, if the priest says You should vote for the Republican because he/she’s pro life, it’s easier to vote that way than to study the candidate and make your own decision.
Kind like how politicians blame violent videogames, because they’re too lazy to tackle real issue.
#207
you win today’s coveted cookie for the smartest kid in class.

there is a video of I think a Fox News reporter getting waterboarded
afterward he came up with a smile and said “that’s not so bad”
173—Obama came from Area 51. That will be revealed too soon. We can only handle so much truth at one time.
I’ve been married for 27 years and I’m here to say -
Torture doesn’t work!!!
#207
Carol,
Agreed. I liken it to defense of children who kill. “It was the video games/movies. They didn’t know it was REALLY gonna hurt anyone.”
My reply: “And you did your job as a parent when..?”
Yes the children did the act, and it was likely an accident, but where were the parents, and why were kids (younger than 12) allowed to see/play ?
Carol – and yet conservatives go after the ACLU Lawyers for defining Constitutional Rights
218–but Area 51 is in the states so he is a citizen!
Wow, that brings up an interesting Constitutional problem: If there are aliens breeding in Area 51 underground, and they are born here, they are US Citizens and can run for President.
That’s a problem….
If your CPA does your taxes and screws up and the IRS comes after you, isn’t the CPA still held responsible?
Even if your lawyer says it’s ok, doesn’t mean it’s ok.

We got two word for you. SUCK IT!

Currently if you are born to a US citizen OR US territory then you are a US citizen. US military bases are considered US soil for these purposes. “Black Sites” are handled however they are handled.
#219 Michael: “I’ve been married for 27 years and I’m here to say -Torture doesn’t work!!!
#200 Paul trojanrabbit, Yikes! Run for the hills!
Okay, doesn’t anyone remember the argument that we, the United States of America, don’t torture because we want all the other countries to adhere to Geneva Convention and not torture OUR SOLDIERS? Duh.
#227
WORD!
Great quote!
Caller, ANYONE we capture is covered under Geneva Common Article 3. Not just soldiers, anyone not AT THAT MOMENT engaged in hostilities. Under our Geneva Common Article 3 obligations, prisoners – even terrorists – have the same rights as non-combatants.
214—Hi Eileen! That sounds like a fun trip as long as that group of high schoolers was smaller than 30. Or if more than 30 you had a loud, bossy helper.
Nacy Pelosi—my jury is still out on her. I’m not sure if she’s shrewd or indecisive.
thank you for making my point caller

I wasn’t scared that more attacks were coming after 9/11. My heart was broken, but I wasn’t scared. I refuse to be terrorized by bin Laden or anybody else.
#222 kar-hussein: “Wow, that brings up an interesting Constitutional problem: If there are aliens breeding in Area 51 underground, and they are born here, they are US Citizens and can run for President.”
That will be the next batch of RWNJ e-mails–nobody cares that they call Obama a liberal, or a Muslim, or a socialist, so now they’ll have to accuse him of being a bug-eyed space alien to get any attention.
235—well the Bushies took that reasoning and turned it on its ear, as they do with everything. They said,
“Well that side tortures our guys so we’re going to torture their guys even worse! Because we’re America and anything you can do I can do better!
So there! I know you are but what am I?”
See? Mature, manly reasoning at work.
I’m not certain Pelosi or Reid are complete id-ten-t’s but I’ve thought from day one of the Obama administration that both are not the right people in those positions.
They both seem to carry a bunch of baggage from the Bush years and their methods seems weak and sometimes just dumb.
I really wish for new leadership that could compliment the new administration better.
#244 okay THAT was funny
“Rombo”? Hannity better be careful. “Rambo” might get “Rambo” on his ass!

#248
A51 is easy – someone could “disappear” if they see it and aren’t supposed to. Harder to do with the border since so many cities have a town right up to the border.
Actually I’m from Chicago and many time during the Bush admin I wrote my Senators to see if they could get us into the EU. Maybe it worked?
#255
they’ve already raised concerns over a “alien reptiles disguised as humans” invasion scenario…
Obama has no discretion in this matter. This is the purview of an independent DoJ.
Remember when we howled in anger, caller, when Bush politically interfered with the independence of the DoJ?
#236 Speaking of Tubby McTreason, I feel the need to have a shaman perform a cleansing of our village after his visit last week. We need to rid ourselves of his evil spirit!

Since we aren’t subject to FCC here, I’d like to propose this:

261—Oh good Lord. This is what is wrong with America. Our kids complain about walking up the Capitol steps. When I was in DC is was a JOY to walk around the Capitol and I’m an old, beat up, overweight 51-year-old. I walked from the Capitol to Arlington the day of the inaguration and it was 17 degrees!
Our children need to watch less TV, less computer, exercise more and toughen up!
OK, now I’m all preachy. Sorry. OK, gotta run. Glad you had fun at the Capitol. It’s pretty cool and the city planners certainly had a sense of the future when they decided to build those massive buildings in the middle of nowhere. D.C. really was in the middle of nowhere when it was planned.

Sorry to disappoint, I’ve been to Dugway, Nellis, and Tonopah (and a dozen other military bases), and Area 51 is just another secure site. You can find the same “authorization to use deadly force” warnings on many other areas on military bases.
Try driving into the RATSCAT site on White Sands Missile Range sometime and see how far you get, the guard shack has automatice weapons in sight. The notion that such secret sites are glamorous and dramatic is another hollywood fantasy. I’ve yet to see one that was really pretty and pleasant, most are windowless, poured concrete, unfinished buildings.

I’d like to ask Jason Alexander if “Duckman” is available anywhere. Thanks. I’ll take my answer off-air.
Steph has been bugging me this week.
TWICE she got on informed, intelligent-sounding callers and she blew them both off in about 15 seconds. (One was with JAG and the other was a army interrogator.)
Both were dead on-topic and apparently experts. And she seems uninterested in them.
But then she lets these stupid nutcases go on and on and on and on…. and on.
Jason Alexander finished the donut he got out of the garbage can just in time to be on the show.

His first marriage to Chrystie Scott (1972 to 1980) produced two children, daughter Casey Jenner (b. June 4, 1980) and first son Burt Jenner (b. 1978). His other sons, Brandon (b. June 10, 1981) and Brody (with second wife Linda Thompson, to whom he was married from 1981 to 1983), appeared in their own reality show The Princes of Malibu, which featured them living with their stepfather David Foster. Brody is also on the reality show The Hills.
Jenner is currently married to Kris (née Houghton, who was previously married to Robert Kardashian). He has two daughters with Kris named Kendall Nicole (b. November 3, 1995) and Kylie (b. August 10, 1997). He is also the stepfather of Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Rob Kardashian.

If Steph’s dad was still alive, I kind of doubt that he’d agree with her as much as she fantasizes he will.
The holocaust was just a policy difference.
Ron, I think on this he would agree
Jason is a good guy poltically – I’ve heard him a few times – always good!
Now I’m outie (gone surfing!)
See ya all on the morrow!
Old Christine IS the boss…
367. THANK-YOU shaf. Good stuff.
Bye capt, have a great day!
I’m out on a limb here but I think Mama knows her pops better than many of us ever will.
Ciao!
I love the fact that Obama has been controlling the debate on the right this whole time- that is, they go from subject to subject based on what he just did, then he’s already on to the next thing as they try to play catch up
no Cosmo?
Michael Richards will be running around the set calling everybody…N****R
That wasn’t a policy difference, that was jealousy. Gingrich couldn’t get bjs from even the ugliest intern.
I’d give it to Julia Louis-Dreyfuss. Whatever she wants, I’d give to her.
liberal hussein — I forgot about that

Congrats on your product! Might need a giant SHAM-WOW to clean up after!
Cindy,
You might be right.
See, that’s the convenience of projecting opinions on departed loved-ones.
(Pets can serve the same useful purpose. They totally agree with you on politics.)
I suspect that Steph’s dad would still be a conservative and disagree with Steph on more than she would like.
Barry Goldwater did moderate on some narrow issues in his old age but he remained a solid conservative. (I’m not expert on him, but this is my memory.)

Hey! Anti-Pirate Astroglide Cannon was my nick in college!

I’m sure Susan’s brows will be taken care of … the reason she was never discovered before was because the norms of how one should look kept us from enjoying that wonderful voice for decades now.
Steph saw the first production of “Romeo & Juliet”.
I worked at a restaurant years back that catered the Seinfeld cast 1 year reunion@ Andy Ackerman’s house- just the 4 cast members & their mates w/ Andy & his wife- funny, funny group

I’m NOT out on a limb here and I think Mama’s conservative brother also knew his dad — and he’d claim that his dad would agree with HIM these days.

I think a lot of conservatives – particularly old school conservatives, don’t agree at all with the current Republican party and would HATE Bush.
BLUCHER!!!
375. Sham-Wow was mine. Weird.
375=385
lol
would it be funny if the republicans kept Al out of office for 6 years – and he ran again and won big this time against the republican … lol

That’s the theory — but which of the old-party conservatives spoke out against Bush when he was screwing the country?
John Dead did. (Probably you could think of a few others.)
But most old-school conservative just cheered Bush on like the rest of the GOP.

“John Dean” — I mean
395 – Careful! You gettin me all hot … We can’t be doin’ this all day …
They could have tortured Khalid Shiek Muhammed by having an amatuer wax him. No water boarding needed with a guy that hairy.
please don’t play that again … uncle… uncle.. UNCLE!!!
Steph saw the first production of Oedipus Rex
Miss California should run for Miss Ignorant U.S.A.
That question was asked because Perez Hilton is an assclown.
399 I think at the beginning that Bush talked the talk and I do believe that they are very afraid to speak out against their own party. I’m not sure if they’re afraid of being called a liberal, socialist, fascist commie or just of retaliation which we all know the GOP is more than capable of. This past election, there were a number of prominent conservatives who said things against Palin in particular. Maybe it’s a sign that they are against their party continuing this trend of STUPID!
I tuned in late today — did Steph mention the Jane Harman today?
It’s a pretty interesting “scandal” that I suspect Fox will be hammering on.
1) It makes a Democrat look bat BUT
2) It also proves that the NSA was spying on Democratic leadership.
Off the lunch. bye, all.
Starting next week, all conservatives who are against abortion rights AND contraception get their own unwanted child – FREE!
Great show!
Have a wonderful rest of the day!
I’ll leave you all with this

mel7190,
Well, I’m glad you see an independent streak in the GOP. As for me, I was searching long and hard for conservative voices when Bush was doing all his major damage. I just did not hear very many.
As for speaking out against Palin — that doesn’t impress me much. Some of it was petty jealousy of her line-jumping to the top of the GOP.
408. I only heard it mentioned once, then she moved on. Bye all, and I’ll get the leftover donuts and muffins (and the crumbs with my sham-wow) HAPPY EARTH DAY!
HAPPY EARTH DAY
k to the g,
As a woman ten minutes ahead of her time, I would have expected Steph to spend more time on the Harman “scandal.”
Even though I think it stinks, it’s actually pretty interesting and I think the Right Wing media are going to try very hard to frame the debate as a Democrat-corruption scandal rather than a NSA spying scandal.
416. I think it will be brought up again, but maybe not because it could be a wash for both parties, politically.
