polisRep. Jared Polis (D-CO) calls in at 8:05am Pacific to discuss the anti-gay murders in Iraq and the need for an investigation. Polis was in Baghdad earlier this week.

• Lead Franken attorney Marc Elias calls in at 8:30am Pacific to talk about the latest in the Franken / Coleman fight for the Senate in Minnesota.

The Liberty Sun, a U.S.-flagged cargo ship bound for Kenya, was attacked last night by Somali pirates. The pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at the ship, which sustained damage, but they never made it onto the ship and the vessel is now being escorted by a coalition ship, still bound for Kenya.

A nationwide “tea party” protest is scheduled in 500 cities for today, Tax Day, in the United States. The protesters’ goal is to pressure Congress and states to reject government spending as a way out of the recession and build an anti-spending coalition around taxpayers.

Good morning Mama, mooks and mookettes and all the Stephanie Fans around the world!

  2. SueC says:

‘morning capt! Listening to stephanie’s show from yesterday on podcast–can’t listen live most days since gotta get to work early…and the Dallas “progressive” talk station (I use the term loosely) dropped mama’s show in favor of some dumbed-down local “progressive” show…(followed by a shopping show, btw)! I had to write a letter in protest to the station! So yea! for podcasts!

  3. capt says:

Where would the SMS fans be able to get a SMS fix without the podcast?

Thank all that is good in the world for the podcast!

  4. flombaye says:

    A TEA-BAGGING Q AND A

    Q: why tea-bagging?
A: it is referent to the boston tea party, thus meant to conflate
the top 1% income bracket with vandals disguised as locals.

    Q: is this traditional?
A: meant to be, but with ever-evolving upgrades on the way…
as watterson pointed out in “calvin and hobbes”, even the
people who are always selling revolution are not necessarily
    to be trusted.

Q: is this a definitive guide?
A: no. as in all matters, do not trust the source. do research like
madness in the spring. here’s one excellent alternative source of
    info already: http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/2009/04/believe-it-or-not.html
plus, it’s a good idea to teabo the coverage and scrutinize the
    semantic differences.

    Q: is tea-bagging a grass-roots movement?
A: many critics have already assailed this tactic, even on FOX, as
a cheesy “astroturf claymation” rather than an organic grass roots
movement. – in bluegrass territory, it is classified as “azureturf”

Q: will steph and the mooks be participating?
A: steph has been known to appear in an above average percentage of
daydreams, alas, often resulting in the appearance of “sleepytime”
whereas lavort is more commonly associated with such varieties as
“lemon zinger” or “earl gay”. jim ward was last seen working on
a north korean recipe for “rindsay rohan rufee”.

Q: are there maps to the best tea-bagging parties?
A: you may recall from MENSA christmas parties, that people of many
stripes, supposedly united by some contrived granfalloon, are very
deeply stupid, and only clinging to the granfalloon in search of
sex. think of tea-baggers as mensans, but with more user-friendly
allowances in spelling and grammar. – just follow the red-state
maps to wherever the impovershed proles want to protect the owning
class from a partial return to paying their taxes.

Q: can tea-bagging improve my credit rating?
A: magic 8-ball says… it’s as effective as any other method.

Q: how long will tea-bagging take to get results?
A: the results are instantaneous! your local tea merchant will sock
away the extra profits into their teetering estate mortgage, with
a sigh of relief, where the equity will maintain value over the
    coming decades. (“this creates jobs!”).

  5. capt says:

    Q: does tea-bagging tickle?
    A: sometimes

Q: will tea-bagging violate my low carb diet?
    A: depends

    Morning Flombaye!

  6. capt says:

Let’s chip in and buy Bunnypants and his ilk some airline tickets to Spain.

    A little vacation . . .

  7. flombaye says:

Q: is capt referring to the ketotic tactic made famous by bouncin’ bob
    atkins?
A: yayezzz! consumption of mass quantities of protein is allowed.
note: please research the atkins diet, before attempting it.
it is not a safe tactic. – what atkins did get right is that
it’s wise to follow one’s appetites.

  8. capt says:

Q: is tea bagging legal and safe?

A: not always when done in a public place.

(tea rooms are for tea, no?)

    lololololo

  9. flombaye says:

Q: is tea-bagging while watching woody allen films “dirty”?
A: i happen to have marshall mccluhan right here, and he says
only if you’re doing it right.

  10. capt says:

That answers my next question . . .

    Q: can you teabag incorrectly?

    A: obviously

  11. SueC says:

Oh man…all this talk of tea-bagging(EEEEK!) makes me want to…go get another cuppa coffee; then off to work! Wish I could stay longer…

  12. capt says:

Ciao for now SueC – hurry back when you can!

  13. flombaye says:

    Q: is tea-bagging hobbit-forming?
A: only if you teabo your TB adventures with teabo baggins.

  14. Carol in Central Mass says:

There’s strong brew on the blog this morning.
    *waves away steam*
Good morning Team Steph in all manifestations!

  15. capt says:

I wish the media would connect the dots to “Alice” and the mad-hatters tea party?

    (mad hatter is Glenn Beck?)

  16. capt says:

    Good Morning Carol!

    Earl Grey?

  17. Carol in Central Mass says:

yep. We’ll see what the day brings.

Meanwhile, good bye to Phil Spector. Wow, did his life turn out wrong.

  18. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

Mornin’ all! I see there’s a lovely conversation about teabagging this morning….perfect mental image to have while eating breakfast…

  19. Good Lord, do you people get up in the middle of the night? ;->

Happy Tea Baggin’ Day, everyone! I don’t know about you guys, but I’m looking forward to my tea bagging this morning.. Well, make that coffee, so I can get my eyes open.

How the hell are you people? I’ve been missing out on the blog for awhile. But I did look in and get some chuckles.

Have you all sent out your GOP.com e-postcard, with the selectable type of tea bag on it? See my photo posting, lifted from KOS, where I get so much of my information nowadays..

And Glenn Beck (plus the Texas governor) is rumbling about having Texas secede from the union. Heck for as long as I can remember, we New Mexicans have wanted to saw Texas off, let it float out to the Gulf, drill a hole in it, and let it sink! ;-> I joking! Some of my best bubba pals are from Texas, and I left my heart in San Antonio in 1976, red headed woman with green eyes, staying out all hours of the night with her on the river walk.. Ah, her sweet sighs! Aw, those beautiful eyes..

Of course, Austin is my favorite Texas city, with San Antonio next and then Dallas.

Anyway, how I blather on. Over!

  20. Carol in Central Mass says:

    How did Barack arrange this!?!!
    http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-04/14/content_11184581.htm

“Thousands of dolphins block priate ships…”

  21. flombaye says:

good moanin’ celtic one. manly yes, but i like it too.

  22. capt says:

I have to jet for a few – I’ll be back.

(anybody need anything from the store?)

  23. Good Morning!!

    HApPY TEA BAG DAY!
    I’ll take mine shaved

  24. flombaye says:

crappage… there goes capt. i wanted to ask the capt to pick up some scotts astroturf builder with coultergeist protective sealant.

  25. Bread, milk, and cigarettes, Capn.. Pall Mall unfiltered..

Oops, cigs are about $6 a pack or something nowadays, yikes! And I forgot, I quit 26 years ago on July 17. I still smoke in my dreams, and enjoy them. How’s that for an addiction?

  26. Shane-O says:

on the tea bags – I kid you not…

Fox & Freaks — just did a little riff about hanging their tea bags from car rear-view mirrors — as one anchor commented “just like fuzzy dice.”

    They REALLY don’t get it…

  27. Carol in Central Mass says:

Hubby Arthur Kelly needs to fall in line with all the other husbands who have been told, “If Bruce Springstein looks my way, all bets with you are off.” Works the other way, too. Just a fact of American life.

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/04142009/news/regionalnews/judge__divorce_of_bruces_other_woman_to__164412.htm

  28. Well, see if you’re really a REAL Conspicuous Christian Republican Base person, you’re completely ignorant about the term tea baggin’. That and a thousand other things we “worldy people” know all about..

  29. flombaye says:

27: they really are getting teste over this.

  30. I may have to look up the satellite channel number for Fox News (I’ve got it blocked so I don’t accidentally land on it while channel surfing) and see how the big “spontaneous” tea parties are doing..

  31. Laura in Binghamton, NY says:

    Morning bloggies! XOXO

  32. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

Hey Shan-o- (still working on getting on steph space- something’s wrong with my log in)- but I think they get it, it’s just they like vulger things like the fake male anatomy that dangles from truck’s rear bumpers….

  33. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

    compensating for something I think….

  34. It’s days like today that I’m proud to have moved to loose tea.

One 8oz tin each of : English breakfast, currant, Irish breakfast, Earl Grey, and gunpowder green on my desk at the office, along with two tea balls and a Cuisinart electric kettle.

Tea bags are for amateurs. I’m tea-ballin’!

  35. #35, which is different, I should point out, from “free-ballin’”.

  36. Shane-O says:

Hey Dani! – you might be right — but it seemed that one of the three idiots tried to reel in the other two as the conversation regressed… to the surprise of the two dolts.

None of it was particularly important — but it was kinda funny. MSNBC has been TOO hilarious about the whole thing for a while now…

  37. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

C’mon, any time you get to hear Dr. Maddow give a whole expose on tea-bagging is worth a great laugh!

  38. Shane-O says:

Rachel and Anna Marie – Shuster, and Olbermann last night have ALL been funny on the subject.

  39. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

    almost showtime…

  40. 3. My Trip to Crazy Town
you almost feel sorry for reasonable republicans

  41. 6. IMPORTANT and scary stuff – Ghostnet
how China could destroy us all from the computer

  42. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

    **spirit fingers**

  43. 8. It’s official: GOP is the tea bag party
even when you see this, you may not believe it

  44. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

anyone want to make a pool for when Bill-o’s head will explode???

    I’m taking friday I think…

  45. MK in NC says:

Am I late for the tea party?

  46. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

    Shan-o… you officially rule!

  47. Shane-WOW! My hero. Beautiful work, Senor, as usual. Thank you.

  48. Pine cone in ‘china beats fir tree in lung every time.

  49. ProducerChris, the seedling can grow a ways on the germ in the seed, before it needs sunlight. It would have eventually died for lack of sunlight.

  50. #57, endosperm, that is.

  51. flombaye says:

i suspect that o’reilly would coddle stephy’s peaches. ANYBODY who doesnt save room for peach coddler is a pinhead.

  52. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

    61 LMAO!

  53. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/4/15/720021/-Cheers-and-Jeers:-Wednesday
From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE…

She packed my tea bags last night pre-flight. Zero Hour nine a.m.

The Rude Pundit posts a disturbing photo that sums up what we’ll be witnessing today: a teabagger holding up a protest sign that looks like a game pad from a creepy (and poorly-played) round of Scattergories:

    END ALL
    UNCONSTITUTIONAL
    ANTI-CHRIST
    SOCIALISM
    FEDERAL
    DEFICIT SPENDING
    PROGRAMS

  54. flombaye says:

the danger of not knowing your countries.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEP7uti0PDw

  55. Jim, I’m sure Denny has not seen 300lbs in the rear view for some time now

  56. Dan The Man says:

    Good Morning All!

Heard of Malloy’s show last PM:
When Limbaugh goes “vacationing” in the Dominican Republic . . .
is he the teabag or is he the teapot?

Happy birthday today – gorgeous Claudia Cardinale (71), Emma Thompson (half century!), Harry Potter’s Hermoime Emma Watson (19), and funnyman Seth Rogen (27).

  57. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

65- or on the scale! (It’s hidden beneath his fat folds)

  58. flombaye, of course you realize, that a pun is the lowest object on the entire spectrum of humor.. ;->

    Still, Pal, you’re slaying me!

  59. jury is still out as to whether Seth Rogen is funny
but my half of the jury says “NO”

  60. #63, I wonder if they would include “the military” in those anti-christian federal deficit spending programs, seeing as the other big federal outlay, Social Security, is still running a surplus.

  61. you really want to do a hummer ad on tea bag day?

  62. Dan The Man says:

Say, also didn’t know that Mitch McChinless was/is a closet case. Heard a little rumor.

  63. Gawd, Claudia Cardinale 71! I knew her back when.. (in my dreams)

  64. GetBusyBoy says:

    Yeah, HOWDY!!

  65. I love this crowd. So funny, smart, and hip. And a little nasty at times.
    I *like* it!

  66. Professor Jojo says:

Steph doing Hummer ads makes baby Jesus cry. Can we take up a collection to make sure neither she or the mooks need to shill for anything with a a herd-of-sasquatch carbon footprint?

  67. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

nasty???? who me?????? **doing my best innocent face**

  68. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

    Mornin Hawk!

  69. The original tea parties were a protest against government subsidies to a big corporation (the British East India Company) in which the chief executive was a major shareholder, at the expense of small business (private tea importers).

So how about those government contracts to companies in which Dick Cheney held stock?

  70. Rocky Mountain High, Colorado says:

77, the fact that GM hasn’t already thrown Hummer under the bus makes me cry. That fact alone means their recovery plan fails and we’re screwed.

  71. Fox Flash: Bedbug infestations on the rise across the U.S.

  72. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

81- sooooooo true…. but the tea-baggers may have to pool their brain cells in order to understand this basic info…

  73. Dan The Man says:

I’ve got two emergency unused teabags in my desk – save them for when I’m feeling really sick (colds, sore throat etc.)

Bigelow Coazy Chamomille (no caffeine) and Mighty Leaf Green Tea Tropical (light caffinated).

I know the values of loose tea, but teabags are so convenient!

  74. flombaye says:

81 – excellently said, bilbobagpiper! the situation is helliburstin with irony!

  75. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

83- they’re running out of things to fear-monger about, huh?

  76. flombaye says:

85: and dont forget the by far most effective preventive/curative tea for addressing sore throats is (i kid you not!): lickerish.

  77. kar-hussein says:

Morning all—I hope all this talk of tea bagging doesn’t put my off tea.

#18—boy yes, Phil Spector’s life sure did turn out wrong. I don’t feel sorry for him though. He had a history of threatening women with guns. I guess he was a little more high than usual that night and he pulled the trigger. Not a nice man.

  78. Bilbobagpiper?

Good morning! We don’t want any adventures around here.

  79. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

88- does that mean Sambuka would be helpful too? (more my speed)

  80. Wow! Fox showing literally TENS of enthusiastic tea baggers!

  81. I don’t think one can qualifier as a tea bagger if you are using herbal tea

  82. Cindy, that’s so French. And probably GAY too.

  83. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

92- I think that beats any previously established porn record!

  84. flombaye
    blech .. I can’t stand Licorice

I won’t even cook with fennel seeds – nor have them here for snacking

  85. qualifier = qualify

  86. kar-hussein says:

OK I just looked at the virtual teabag postcard someone posted. I have never seen anything more lame in my life.

  87. If it’s not from a tea tree, it’s not tea. It’s an herbal infusion.

By golly gosh, real tea is Indian.

  88. kar-hussein says:

93—I think herbal tea is considered commie pinko tea.

  89. kar-hussein says:

99—real tea is the black Irish tea they sell at Trader Joe’s. Strong enough to clean copper I’m sure!

  90. flombaye says:

for those who can not abide licorice, graham crackers with cheez wiz are an acceptable substitute for flavor, thoe only bee barf comes close for treatment of sore throats.

  91. kar-hussein says:

85—those teas are probably not Republican enough. Sorry. You cannot participate today with those ;-) .

  92. shāf says:

Good Morning, everyone! Sorry, I’m late to the party.

I had a dental appointment to start the day. Just a routine cleaning and exam. Although, the special on Norm Coleman glow-in-the-dark veneers caught my eye. ;)

  93. #101, TJ’s teas are quite good, but if you really want awesome, order from Adagio teas online. Their Earl Grey is incredibly aromatic.

It’s not strong enough to clean copper, but their “Next to Godliness” powder dishwasher soap does a fine job.

  94. Shane-O says:

    Jim skates?

Love me some Frank Rich! (He was on the first SMS I ever listened to — all those years ago… :) )

  95. kar-hussein says:

Hey did you see Colbert last night? Our hero got the space station treadmill named after him!! Now the astronauts will say, “I’m going to go jump on the Colbert” when they go work out.

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/TV/04/15/colbert.nasa/index.html

  96. kar-hussein says:

    108—I agree. He’s a good guest.

  97. kar-hussein says:

    106—-Thanks. That postcard was ridiculous.

  98. flombaye says:

thank you, CIB, for posting entry 39. it’s worth repeating so that all shall see it. – and now that the slow children are discovering the joy and wonder of becoming tech-savage, will they be referring to the voices in their heads as “god-casting”?

  99. For you OLDER folks, remember:

    “Lipton Tea’s the brisk tea,
    drink it every day.
    Now here comes Arthur Godfry,
    the talent’s on its way.”

    Damn, we were cornballed.

  100. shāf says:

#109 It also got coverage on NPR this morning. At least NASA has a sense of humor (although, they are still sans-Administrator).

  101. #105

Norm Coleman looks like he wants a carrot, or maybe to build a dam using assorted logs.

    *nice teeth!*

  102. Shane-O says:

    #113 – “OLDER” here, then!!!

  103. shāf says:

#113 Makes me wonder if the same minds who brought us the game “corn hole” are the ones responsible for naming today’s teabag parties.

  104. mel7190 says:

Good morning all! Happy Tax Day!

  105. Shane-O says:

Gee – does this caller listen to Glenn Beck much??? hmmm….

  106. Lame “conservative” caller alert!

    Mussolini my ass.

  107. mel7190 says:

    What freedom has caller/ahole lost?

  108. what freedoms has Obama taken away?

  109. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

Sometimes I think the righties just use parrots to call in…

  110. mel7190 says:

Oh…I can’t be a selfish PRICK and drive my big penis extension car!

  111. what we can’t have an opinion about what you drive?

  112. scooter says:

What a complete idjut!! Good gawd, there must be a factory crankin’ these fools out and releasing them into the wild.

  113. mel7190 says:

Who says you HAVE to do anything moron? Just keep being the same selfish, earth-destroying PRICK you always were. We expect it of your ilk!

  114. kar-hussein says:

Oh boy—-this is so sad. New Afghan law says husbands are entitled to demand sex from their wives every 4 days.

What’s the punishment if the lady won’t put out? And who is going to document the evidence against her?

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fgw-afghanistan-protest16-2009apr16,0,7668966.story

  115. This guy makes my ass tired. And when my ass is tired, I’m completely exhausted!

  116. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

I’m making a call to add chlorine to the gene pool…. seriously…

  117. Shane-O says:

C’Mon Steph!!! — Solve ALL the world’s problems — NOW!

  118. Dan The Man says:

These stupid ass conservabot callers have GOT NOTHING! There was some dumb idiot calling Malloy last night, trying to play “dumb”. Such incredible misinformation. Cut this stupid ass off, guys!

  119. mel7190 says:

What gun law has changed? What law has passed that is oppressive? You’re too easy to MOCk – IDIOT!

  120. Libertarianism isn’t a political ideology. It’s antisocial pathology posing as one.

  121. caller:

too crossed eyed to see what’s in front of him, fingers firmly in his ears so he cannot hear reason.

  122. well our city doesn’t give it … you have to pay $3.00
you don’t have to … but if you are over your trash limit you have to put it in a special bag that costs about $2.00 per bag

pay as you throw was done because the COSTS of taking care of our trash went up ,,, it was either that or INCREASING our taxes.

  123. #128, the law was overturned by the Afghan supreme court, AFAIK.

  124. mel7190 says:

Let’s face it, folks, if they really knew ANYTHING, they would be LIBERALS! LOL

  125. kar-hussein says:

131— ;-) It’s a SHOW people. It’s working hard at being entertaining, not setting public policy!

  126. Coz you know, Hitler was a left-winger.

    Hiya, Bloggoes!

  127. shāf says:

#134 I once heard Libertarians described as “Republicans who want to legalize pot”. Probably no too far off the mark.

  128. kar-hussein says:

136—I like pay as you throw. It makes sense. If you make more trash than your neighbor then pay for disposing it.

  129. mel7190 says:

Why is it the right-wing that’s full of armed people that hate everyone, gov’t that spys without warrants and ignores laws and religious zealots believe that it’s the other side that’s the threat?

  130. kar – that was passed a few weeks ago and the afghan government is going back and looking into changing it

  131. mel7190 says:

141 What do you call liberals that want to legalize pot? ;o)

  132. Laura in Binghamton, NY says:

    teabags AND hummers!

  133. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

Chris- I think some types of hummers are actually already illegal in Florida- there’s actually a no oral sex law on the books… tihehe

  134. Laura in Binghamton, NY says:

OH! Jim and I collided on that one

  135. mel7190 says:

Uh oh…boat crashed into bridge in Cali

  136. #133, Holder and Obama have both talked about reinstating the assault weapons ban, which is a stupid idea for several reasons:
    1) “assault weapons” are very rarely used in crimes
    2) it bans cosmetic, not real features
    3) millions of guns and magazines are grandfathered in
    4) it’s an electoral loser in a lot of purple states
    5) and responds to emotional fears, not real dangers
    6) there was no bump in “assault weapon” violence when the ban expired

The Blue Dogs, in a rare instance of being useful, have indicated to Pelosi that they will block it in the House, saving the Dems from themselves.

  137. But folks, I’m sure you’ve noticed that TRUTH has virtually nothing to do with conservative talking points. They constantly make claims that are absolutely false, and then proceed to argue them.. Vociferously!

  138. thank you Peter … I missed that

  139. mel7190 says:

  144. Jenna from Boston says:

That right wing luv muffin really made me nuts. The conservatives try to legislate to eliminate rights of individuals, not the “progressives who aren’t progressive.” Sure, we want to pass legislation to ENCOURAGE people to drive more environmentally friendly cars, and give people the information about toxins in bottles and the waste of disposable water bottles, but I don’t see anyone trying to forbid any of it.

  145. 152 — I’ve been thinking about that lately. When did “conservative” and “delusional” become synonymous?

  146. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

ooooohhhhh brian… more magic fingers for us…. oh la la!

  147. #141, I’ve know a lot of libertatians, and basically, it boils down to “I don’t like people, and I consider any social interaction an intrusion on hiding in my man-cave”. From this, any social obligation imposed by the government at the behest of the electorate is tyranny. So they feel oppressed when people frown upon behaviors like buying gas-guzzlers or drinking bottled water, because the implied social shame of doing something bad violates their sphere of selfish isolation.

  148. Jenna from Boston says:

OK, I gotta go. I think my son forgot to take the trash out last night.

Even his hours have been cut at his part-time job. The owner of the business is now working the counter more and more because she doesn’t have to pay herself.

He got a job last year next to an area where a bunch of new condos were going up and new mall stores were being built. I told him last year, “You’re boss is wrong. She got herself a store in a terrible location and since the RE market is going into the dumpster those condos are not going to sell. She will not have enough walk-by customers to stay in business.”

Since he’s 18 he didn’t believe me, as 18-year-olds are inclined to do, but lo and behold, I’m right. He’s lucky if he gets 8 hours a week now.

It’s so sad. All right—have a nice day people!

  153. Jenna from Boston says:

162: Well said. If there were no government, we would be a nation of ignorant, uneducated fools with no roads to drive on and no public transportation. Wait, after 8 years of Bush, with the assistance of Fox, it seems there ARE a bunch of ignorant, uneducated fools (called children not left behind) and the bridges are collapsing and public transporation is struggling. Hhhm. I think I just confused myself… :)

  154. As a lifelong hunter myself, I’ve never understood why the Walter Mitty’s always need the “assault weapon” look. I have seven rifles and shotguns, only the Springfield 30-06 is a “military” weapon, and it is in my Dad’s home made stock and scope. My [deceased] would get a horse laugh out of the assault weapon craze.

We truly Manly Men ™ don’t need all this kiddie crap. ;->

  155. #156, really? That doesn’t jibe with the crime statistics I’ve seen. As a fraction of the guns privately owned, “assault weapons” are only likely to kill you if you’re an extra in a movie. Almost all gun violence is with pistols and shotguns. When they are used, they do make a big media splash, mainly because it feeds into an existing (if false) narrative.

The reason they’re not used is that, “assault weapons” are too large to be used in crime violence. You can’t conceal them, you can’t aim them easily in confined spaces, and so on. Even the military doesn’t use them under such circumstances, preferring carbines and submachine guns.

  156. mel7190 says:

163 Yes, of course. It’s become pretty clear that liberal talking heads and pundints know! LOL The censors must be freaking out! Doesn’t it figure that the only thing that gets boots on the ground in right-wing world is taxes? Talk about anti-American – they don’t even want to pay for their own gov’t!

  160. #169, though “assault weapons” are poor hunters, they’re good varmint weapons, and excellent sport shooters. I would point out that the 2nd Amendment doesn’t protect hunting guns, but “arms”, which are an infantryman’s weapons. “Need” does not enter into rights; what do you “need” with free speech or freedom of religion?

  164. Skyhawk says:

The stats I’m finding are from the mid-90s, and it seems that assault weapons, making up 1.7% of privately-owned guns, are used in less than 1% of gun crimes.

  187. #195, how about the several million owners who aren’t doing anything wrong? How about the people who get killed from pistols because you addressed legislative efforts at irrational fears, rather than good policy, and end up with a pro-Republican backlash in purple states?

It’s clear that you want them banned because they scare you, not because they present a real danger. So is it then fair for righties to ban everything that irrationally frightens them?

Also, cannons are not “arms” in Constitutional language, and aren’t protected.

Let me guess, you think the “assault weapons” ban addressed full auto weapons, right?

  196. I dunno. Many of the bubbas I see bristling with the “assault style” weapons are filing on them to make them full auto. Something about an extension to an inadequate penis, as far as I can tell. They seem a bit insecure about several things, and are often convinced that the “liberals” are to blame for all their own problems and shortcomings. Assault style weapons are a convenient binky. If you don’t like it, talk to the gun.

Don’t get me wrong, I like guns and would like to own many interesting ones, including handguns, if I had a lot of money. That is, I understand interest and enjoyment of guns and shooting and hunting. At this stage of my life, however, I’ve moved beyond, if I had a lot of money I would donate to my podiatrist so he could spend it on the clinic he is expanding in Guatemala and visits every 3 months.

  197. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

I would think it applies to semi and fully automatice weapons… if it included shot guns or hunting rifles, I wouldn’t support it… it’s not a matter of them scaring me… it’s a matter of practicality… what does a regular civilian need that? Or hey, if they want them so damn bad, what’s wrong with licensing like Hartmann suggests… I would support any effor to keep ANY weapons out of the hands of criminals (outside of a complete ban anyhow… but I’m not ignorant… I know that it would be nearly impossible to get all the illegal guns off the street…

But why does someone need an ak-47 unless they are planning mass murder… if you simply wanted to shoot one, couldn’t they make it possible to rent it?

  199. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

211- I’m also a gun owner- I have a taurus pt 9ll 9mm … and I also enjoy going to the range… but I still support the automatics being off the street (it’s just the logisitics part I’m not sure how they would pull it off)

  200. #211, I should also add that neither of my rifles meet the definition of an “assault weapon” under the ban – notably because one has no bayonet lug, and has a welded and pinned muzzle brake in the place of the threaded flash suppressor, but is otherwise identical to a gun that fell under the ban.

This is the very examplar of stupid, emotion-driven legislation. Meanwhile, nitwits with semi-auto Uzis show up at the range with a weapon that can fire as quickly, but can be tucked under a coat or under a car seat.

  201. #221, automatics have been banned since the 1930s. Please do inform yourself.

  202. #217, that filing is 1) a felony, and 2) breaks the gun.

  203. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

  205. mel7190 says:

203 I’m actually in Ohio, but I’ve seen the news out of FL and Cali about the use of these weapons by gangs. I believe our local laws prohibit the weapons here. I, too, am not against guns in general, but I think there’s nothing wrong with common sense about something SO dangerous!

  206. shāf says:

#226 Okay, he was punkin’ us!

  207. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

Gun history is not a hobby of mine— but I’m informed enough to know it’s not difficult to turn a semi-auto into fully-auto- and I’m guessing the legality part is not a big concern to people who file the pin… I know the logisitics will make the ban nearly useless… but we have to start somewhere

  208. mel7190 says:

211 It’s not about legislating intent – it’s about having some sense when it comes to deadly weapons. It’s harder to get a driver’s license than a gun and yes, I know you don’t have a RIGHT to drive, but that’s beside the point. Just as you feel people are overly emotional about guns, I feel that gun people are overly emotional about any talk of how to manage the very real threat.

  209. #227, again, if they’re so dangerous, then why are they half as likely to be used in a crime as other guns? The danger isn’t real, it’s emotional.

The fact that anyone thinks we’re talking about full-autos, which have been incredibly tightly restricted since the 1930s, and banned entirely since the ’80s, shows this is not a rational policy debate.

Besides, aren’t we liberals? We’re supposed to think societal ills are caused by inequality and privation, not by people being tempted to sin by allowing inanimate objects to be legal. That’s the social conservative schtick.

  217. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

233- that’s easy for you to say, because obviously you’re an intelligent, responsible gun owner… these laws are not suggested for people like you… they’re for the ones who aren’t responsible… that’s why I personally support the liscening argument…that and I just don’t see how they’d get the guns out there off the street… but could possibly put in a policy stating the gun is takin away if not liscened properly..

  218. mel7190 says:

233 Come on now – not a single person has said they believe people are tempted to commit crimes because they own a gun. False argument. You’re ignoring the fact that people who are dangerous/crazy/whatever will find it much easier to kill large numbers of people with assault weapons. You’re not using common sense and making it IMPOSSIBLE to debate this topic. I have this experience EVERYTIME this topic comes up.

  219. Danielle – they want an AK47/look alike because it’s COOL. Admired by all like minded people who think an AK47 is cool. And some kind of statement against all the wimpy liberal limp wristed faggots who aren’t manly enough to understand and want to take away 2nd Amendment rights.. Shooting an automatic weapon definitely makes one feel empowered.

You need to be a male (and immature helps) to fully understand it. Suspect logic, common sense, and let the big dog of EGO eat.

Many are also convinced that if everyone carried a concealed weapon, bad ass 250 lb men who try to rape 98 lb women in the parking lots would cease to exist, overnight.

And another prime fantasy paranoia is that they might need to “refresh the Tree of Liberty” will some blood. You know, stock up the Exploder with plenty of beer, chips, burgers, ammo and guns, then head for the hills and be modern Minute Men. And “take back” the country from the bad old Government.

What pisses me off about many of these gun freaks is that they may actually get our (common citizens) guns banned by being such idiots.

JMNSHO, I got my first rifle at age 12.

  220. #231, it’s a lot more difficult than you think; it’s also already a serious crime, and not one you can conceal once done. And as I said, it effectively breaks the trigger group. It’s more than filing the pin, it’s damaging the sear.

#232 sense with deadly weapons? Then address the ones actually used in crimes: require licensing, training, and background checks for pistols. I’m all for that sort of thing, as long as any fees associated with it don’t make it prohibitive for lower income levels. That is the rational policy solution.

Addressing poverty and prohibition in high-violence neighborhoods, which is the actual cause of violence, not the weapons used, that’s a rational policy solution.

Banning new manufacture of a class of weapon of which at least 4 million (as of the ’90s) will remain grandfathered in private hands, which are less used in crime than average, and which are constitutionally protected, because they’re angular, scary, and used in action movies is irrational policy.

  224. #241, there are millions of assault rifles in private hands. They are responsible for less than a percent of gun crimes. Seems to me that the overwhelming majority are responsible.

I would be happy to be licensed and background-checked to prove it.

  225. #243, shooting an automatic weapon is very hard, because you have to be a class III licensee, or know one, and find a range that caters to class III licenses.

The fact that you’re harping on autos shows you don’t know what you’re talking about. I repeat: effectively banned since the 1930s.

  235. mel7190 says:

“Many are also convinced that if everyone carried a concealed weapon, bad ass 250 lb men who try to rape 98 lb women in the parking lots would cease to exist, overnight. ”
Which is true ONLY if the 98 lb women knows how to handle the weapon AND is willing to take a life. As my hubby says, a gun is only good for protection if you’re willing to use it. For many people, that’s not an option.

“What pisses me off about many of these gun freaks is that they may actually get our (common citizens) guns banned by being such idiots.”
Most laws are based on the lowest common denominator. Maybe some laws that require training, licensing etc would help, but most gun folks won’t consider it in my experience.

Rights and freedoms are not, by definition, what you need. Your rationale to ban precisely the types of weapons envisioned by the founders (infantryman’s arms) can be turned immediately around to ban any number of things we liberals cherish as freedoms.

You’re talking like a social conservative. Try talking like a liberal: let’s address poverty and prohibition, let’s break the gangs’ financial backs and put jobs into poor crime-ridden communities.

  246. #265, and magically, we have found common ground. Behold the healing power of the SMS. Group hug!

  247. 248: So, I don’t think you are advocating banning handguns or anything, right? (I’m certainly not.). It still comes down to the fact that law abiding citizens like you and I, if we did indeed register our guns (and get sample shots, etc.) and considerable expense/aggravation/inconvenience to the owners. Meanwhile all the criminals will ignore the law, in general.

I don’t see licensing as the answer, although I’m a big advocate of hunter and weapons safety training. Many years ago, when I was in high school, back when the NRA was primarily a hunter safety organization, I was a member. That was before it became a rabid right wing political tool..

We still have to ask ourselves why this country has so many hundreds even thousands of handgun deaths, compared to the rest of the planet. Notice that our neighbors in Canada have at least as many guns as we do, per capita, and a tiny smidgen of gun deaths, per capita.

I admit my bias, a strong one, against ANY and ALL things right wing. So that tends to cloud my purity and absolute objectivity. But I don’t see any real answers coming from Republicans and particularly their extreme right wing positions on everything.

By this logic, why have any laws? With registration, we can make laws for illegal guns stronger and motivate people to follow the law that way. It’s possible that registration and the like could get more guns off the street and make gun owners more responsible for their deadly weapons.

  259. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

  279. #274, and won’t go away with a ban.
#284, licensing and registration would help keep guns out of the hands of the unbalanced, and would go a long way toward reducing accidental deaths from poor and insecure storage.

My problem with training and licensing is that it has to be free, or a token fee, or indexed to income. Government-levied user fees on individuals are a ALWAYS (no matter the topic) a way for the middle class to exclude working and poor people from their freedoms.

  280. Skyhawk says:

    Shaf! Spartiest of Sparta!

  281. this quote is making it’s rounds on twitter (being rt all over the place)

“Taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society.” –Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr

  282. Years ago I wrote an essay about Bush and Cheney being
avid ball-sackers. They claimed it keeps them Up for
any world-governance emergency they might have to face.
I think it’s still out here:
    http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s2i32861

It wasn’t the best thing I ever wrote but I think I
was at least ahead of my time with it, considering
the teabagging story today. Czech it out if you like.

  283. here’s hoping today’s Tea Bagging events are seen as the weak, pathetic Fox News sponsered astro-turf protests that they are.

  284. I’ve never carried a gun, except to go hunting. And my guns are not even loaded (except my 12 gauge shotgun, for home protection). However, for years I carried an axe handle in my car’s trunk, which I’m sure wouldn’t have stood a chance against any sort of gun. But it was my binky. Never used it, just knew it was there.

By the by, my TV is on mute and am watching the closed captioning with Faux News in the background. No massive tea bagging crowds yet, no demonstrations..

Of course, we *knew* “mainstream media” wouldn’t cover them, but Fox News doesn’t seem to be covering the tea parties very well either.

  285. demdame says:

shaf – My belated huzzahs for your great Lipton-flavored Sparta win.

  286. mel7190 says:

310 I agree about free training or minimal fee. Of course, anything run by the gov’t is bound to look like the DMV, but that’s not an excuse to let it go. Glad to see we have some common ground! I wonder if the right-wing would allow welfare money to go for training and reg for guns? What a dilema for them! LOL

  287. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

310- I agree with the fee for the license, but I think they need to do a better background check regarding mental health… I work in insurance, so I know this is protected health info that other people aren’t entitled to. Unless you commit a crime due to the mental health issue, there’s not a record of it on your background check… how they fix this… I have no idea… but I think it needs to be addressed..

  288. DrunkNIrishDanielle says:

Wow… did we all agree on one point… I swear this show is just magical!

  289. I’m really looking forward to the Polis interview. Did anyone go to the link Chris provided?

  290. mel7190 says:

318 Wouldn’t it be cool if they could check your mental state like they check your eyes at the DMV? Hmmmm…on second thought that might not be cool! Crazy is relative sometimes.

  291. #317, the only problems I have with the DMV are the REALLY long lines. I’ve never found DMV people to be surly, as per their reputation. Smile, and they smile back!

Neal Cavuto and a crowd of …nearly –…one, two, three, four– …tens …of people waving teabags!

  294. shāf says:

#314 What I’d like to see is the Faux News coverage (with the expected tight shots on the crowd) compared to a wide shot by other media. I’m guessing the turnout will be a whole lot smaller than it appears on Fox.

  295. Shane-O says:

Death is a risk of life. We can reasonably minimize it: but going after the apparently dangerous than the actually dangerous is the wrong way to do it.

  311. John Putnam says:

A new Rovian conspiracy for you. Fox in promoting psuedo news tea-bagging, like rock stations promote rock concerts, is trying to create a straw man for claiming liberal media bias. This non-newsworthy event, when not covered by the real news media, will be claimed to be a prime example where (non-fox) news outlets are liberally biased, filtering news, so you have to get your real new from on other place than fox. 334. #351, prohibition was the ugly side of universal suffrage, the prohibition of alcohol being a major plank in the suffragist movement.

  343. mel7190 says:

  353. Skyhawk says:

Jim’s it’s likely because those tea baggers are unemployed. You know, the ones who vote against their best interests.

  354. #379, property law prior to suffrage was more complicated than that, and varied from state to state – some operated under community property laws and common law, others under Napoleonic law. In all cases, the wife was more invested in the property than you suggest, at least in legal theory.

We have to hold his administration responsible for that; otherwise we’re the same kind of sycophant that supported Bush.

  413. mel7190 says:

shaf – Did you see my comments yesterday for Aidan 5? Showed it to hubby last night. He also thought it was well done. The whole thing, start to finish, was done in 48 hours?

  419. mel7190 says:

Personally, I love Al Franken. He’s smart, funny, witty and clearly more people in Minnesota agree!

  420. Ron "McLovin" Luce says:

Did you hear Franken’s radio show? I was really impressed with Franken — he is smart, fair and insightful.

But, he doesn’t wear it on his sleeve like Thom Hartmann — so I think lots of people missed-it.

  421. mel7190 says:

“protect and serve” seems to imply some responsibility to prevent crime.

  422. Scott in Burbank says:

I can’t wait to see/hear the interviews with the teabaggers today when asked exactly “why” they’re there. Either we’ll hear repeated talking points quoted verbatim from Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc. or we’ll see a lot of vacant stares or gross examples of racism.

  423. #450, yes, but brandishing while willing to use is frequently effective in getting someone to back off. The pumping action of a shotgun is a particularly distinct aural warning.

The claim “you’re at more risk in the house with a gun than without” is ultimately bogus, because it ignores the unquantifiable number of times a firearm is present, but not discharged, in a confrontation with a criminal or intruder.

  424. Laura in Binghamton, NY says:

Haven’t heard this bump in a WHILE

  425. #458, ask a cop if preventing a crime is his job.

Yes, they will investigate suspicious behavior when they see it, but reality is reality: police don’t because they can’t. At best, their presence acts as a deterant.

  426. Ron "McLovin" Luce says:

    >> dam-Hussein

Me too. These conservative need to be laughed at stripped of their media legitimacy.

Barak might be the right guy to do that.

Ironically, we liberals also need to give credibility to a MATURE AND THOUGHTFUL conservative movement. Barak is the guy for that, too.

  427. shāf says:

#455 I caught up on the LB after my meetings. Thanks, for the kind comments.

Yes, our team received its genre (sci-fi) on Friday (8/14/08) at 7:00 PM and had until Sunday at 7:00 PM to write, shoot, edit, score and package the DVD for presentation. It was challenging and very fun!

  428. k to the g says:

    457. Agreed. Plus he really wants to serve the people of Minnesota, not further himself.

  429. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

    shāf, you rock.
Got to go everybody. Have a great one.

  430. mel7190 says:

The Bush people watched Fox because they wanted to make sure they got the memo and they didn’t care about other opinions.

I have roots in MN and, I have to say, Franken isn’t a perfect fit, either.

Remember Minnesotans also gives us some of the least-serious, most crazy candidates ever.

  432. mel7190 says:

Can’t we blame the GOP for the pirate problems since they were so against the mission in Somalia and kept attacking the Prez during that war like the unAmerican a-holes they are….

  433. demdame says:

    Bye Sarah. Happy huff-a-lump day!

  434. I have a major problem with Obama and not going after the war criminals in the Bush Administration. He seems to be sweeping this under the rug; I suspect there are many people on both sides of the aisle in Congress and the Senate, as well as the CIA who don’t want the status quo (ignore it) disturbed.

The other major problem I have is not putting some regs on the credit card companies, who are gouging like hell right now.

Obama is doing a great job on many fronts, but not these two issues.

  435. #463, I think that the trend is irreversible. I think what will happen is that the Dem party will split into a corporatist and populist wing within the next decade, and the Republican party will become spoilers like the Greens do for the Dems.

  436. #438: I’m pinning it on him because he is making the argument in court papers that the people held there have no habeas rights, exactly as Bush did with Gitmo. Obama’s justice department made that argument last Friday. I know Obama didn’t create it, but adopting Bush’s argument is just as bad when he simply could have not argued that.

  437. Scott in Burbank says:

I can’t help but politely smile and applaud at the teabaggers like a proud parent cheering for their 4-year old in the school play… They try so very hard…

They don’t understand what they’re doing, but they try…

  438. #473, when it comes to what his DoJ argues in court, the buck stops with Obama.

  439. Laura in Binghamton, NY says:

    licked the cheese, lol

  440. mel7190 says:

471 I agree. I know we have big problems, but I think a Prez pissing on the Constitution is a big problem, too.

  441. Laura in Binghamton, NY says:

i bet he CUT the cheese! Oh snap!

  442. shāf says:

My mom used to make grilled cheese sandwiches with Velveeta. It. Was. Awesome!

  443. Ron "McLovin" Luce says:

    mel7190,

Good point! I had forgotten that the conservatives were DEADSET against us being involved in Somalia.

I also like to remind my conservative friends that they sided with Al Qaeda when Clinton bombed them.

They did, they really did! You can Google it.

US intellegence said it was a weapons factory. Al Qaelda said it was an aspirin factory. The conservatives sided with Al Qaeda.

  444. I was an Obama supporter, and I despised Bush. However, I will call anyone out on doing the wrong thing…I don’t care who they are. The constitution is paramount to me.

  448. #478, cue the Kelsey Grammer “Irritable Bowel Syndrome” spot.

Preferably redone with Jim’s voice, since he does a MUCH better Kelsey Grammer than whoever did that one.

  449. Reek Havoc says:

i sure dont need a gun. you cant drive 5 blocks here where i live without seeing some young highball cop goosing his ford. honestly, Minnesota is already damn near a police state. i bet if i dial 911, there at my house in like seconds, instead of minutes

  450. mel7190 says:

480 I’ve been listening for that point on radio and tv and haven’t heard it brought up yet. Of course, right-wingers won’t bring it up because they don’t remember anything Fox didn’t say yesterday…

  451. Feh, only honest-to-god sharp cheddar will do on my grilled cheese.

I need a bigger stock pot; I made cheese once a couple years ago, white cheddar aged 6 months, it was easy (though my pot was barely big enough), and it was SOOOO GOOOOOD.

  452. shāf says:

    Great show, everybody!

    Have a awesome day. :)

  453. Scott, Al Franken had a good point about how the Democrats love their country like a parent cares about a teenager, while Republicans love their country like a little girl loves her mommy..

  454. that’s a wrap?!

    see (read/hear) yas tomorree.

    *waves*

  455. mel7190 says:

    Have a great day, all!

  456. demdame says:

    Bye y’all. Ta-ta, tea-tea, slurp.

  457. Ron "McLovin" Luce says:

    mel7190,

Yeah, they still deny that they sided with Al Qaeda but you can catch them in it, because they STILL will tell you that Clinton bombed an aspirin factory.

Then you say, “But American intelligence said it was a weapons factory. Al Qaeda said it was an aspirin factory. Whose side are you on?”

    They fall for this one.

  458. Ron "McLovin" Luce says:

    Ivan,

I hadn’t heard that quote about Franken. Funny! I’ll have to think about it, though. I love Franken for that.

  459. Scott in Burbank says:

    Peace, out!

  460. TTFN, bloggers, I love and respect you all, even you that I disagree with a little. I really like the breadth of the people here, you are all sharp and interestng, with a great sense of humor, common sense, and varied interests.

Don’t you ever change; have a great day, and hasta manana, gentes!
