donsiegelman• Former Alabama governor Don Siegelman calls in at 7:30am Pacific to talk about his reaction to the court’s upholding of 5 of the 7 charges against him.

• President Obama signed an executive order yesterday repealing a Bush-era policy that limited federal tax dollars for embryonic stem cell research. Obama also signed a presidential memorandum establishing greater independence for federal science policies and programs.

• President Obama yesterday ordered a review of George W. Bush’s guidelines for implementing legislation passed by Congress, at the same time saying that he would implement his own vision of how he wants the government to follow the law. Obama said government officials must check with Attorney General Eric Holder before relying on any of Bush’s signing statements for guidance.

President Obama today will call on Americans to educate themselves as well as their children during his first major speech devoted solely to education since taking office. He will promote tighter standards for teachers and a reduced dropout rate for students as part of an education plan.

About 12,000 U.S. soldiers will leave Iraq by September, officials said Sunday. The withdrawals, which will most likely come from Baghdad and Anbar province, once main battlefields of the war, are the first step in keeping with President Obama’s pledge to end America’s role in the war.

Loved the Douglas Adams, Airplane and Galaxy Quest references today.
Mark - I'll check out that Neil Gaiman story. I love his work.
Have a great Tuesday everyone!

"social ranking that stick with you"

To the insides of your colon? Like spackle?

lolololo

Until tomaree then!

#420 CIndy, Yikes! Hope you feel better!

421 Douglas Adams was great, reading him you felt like
you had a friend. Gotta go do stuff now, alla you hava
great afternoon

I was in extreme pain (pain in my chest - no it wasn't a heart attack) ... and was sooo glad to get the morphine so I could at least breath

I'm happy to have made it back before the show is over.

You folks have a stellar day!

Be good or good at it

See ya in the morning

Bye all see ya tomorrow.

#420 - No, I hadn't heard that. My mini-me is having surgery this Monday. I hope there's no problem getting her pain killers.

Byee all! Thee-ya Capt!

proverb parallel to colbert's observation: science is a bias in favor of stuff that works.

#414, I'd say it's more like "kids CAN be cruel". Kids can be very kind one moment, but viciously pounce on weakness the next, mainly because late childhood and early adolescence is a mad scramble for a social ranking that stick with you, to some extent, your entire life.

Basically, they're like the little blue aliens in the Beryllium Sphere mine in Galaxy Quest.

"Didn't you people ever WATCH the show?"

416 ever read "Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate
Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch: written by
Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman?

If you like The Hitchhiker's Guide you'll like this
parody of The Omen

Will Boner get boned in 2010?

#420,

Too much pain in your area.

:(

#420 Cindy, I don't know what you had to go to the emergency room for, but I hope you're feeling better. They generally don't break out the morphine unless you're in extreme pain.

AAR is still kicking. As well as other progressive talk shows. Randi evenutally will return.

"We know that polls are just a collection of statistics that reflect what people are thinking in 'reality.' And reality has a well known liberal bias."

~ Stephen Colbert, Speech to White House Correspondents' Dinner, April 30, 2006

#414 Mark, #416 Sarah, I think part of it is that Douglas Adams has that undercurrent of pathos that makes humor great instead of just snarky.

BTW did you all know that there is a shortage of PERCOCET here in the US? Found out about the shortage Saturday after they gave me morphine in the ER and prescribe me percocet ... and I couldn't get it

407 lolololol
Rush couldn't find his asshole with a funnel.

capt, dental pathology challenge: from warren zevon: "...a little old lady got mutilated late last night, werewolves of london again" - we gonna henry higgins you thru this, old boy!

Reality has a liberal bias.

405-my middle schooler is a Douglas Adams lover, too. We're raising our kids right! (or left!)

excellent project idea for pat boone: "no more mr white guy".

#405 kids are freaking cruel, and never more cruel that
at the middle school lunch table. Good old Doug Adams!
His books can always make you feel better. And life is
too short to be depressed all the time. like Marvin.

I got the good stuff 2% lidocaine - he was working for almost 1.5 hours!

Dory Monson - local Seattle tool extraordinaire. He's not worthy of you, Steph.

#404, so would the Andro extension device. 1/3 larger! That would bring it to... what... half human normal?

394: saying "chapstick" on novocaine? - sounds like an eponymous reference to slapstick.

Rush couldn't find "little Rush" with both hands a flashlight in a room full of mirrors.

Rita Cosby is back! OMG

#386 Mark: "Vogon poetry?"

 My middle-schooler had a tough day at school yesterday (we forget how 6th grade cafeteria table culture make the Wall Street pit look like a day at the beach). A chapter from Douglas Adams featuring Marvin the Paranoid Android cheered him right up.

#396 - Ceiling mirrors make it easy.

Hey Capt can you say methlab?

"Your problems were probably due to all that teeth-grinding you did for the past 8 years."

*looks over shoulder*

How'd you know?

I actually have been a grinder since childhood. UGH!

398-but funny!

379: good call; technology always impacts qualifications for combat. the russian front repelled the nazis with absolute total success, by using, quite frankly, russians, and better yet, russian women, creatures perfectly designed for work as snipers.

#389 Lurlene! the methlab blew up agin, dammit!

Chaf - Chaph -

Yup - all but impossible!

#390 - Your problems were probably due to all that teeth-grinding you did for the past 8 years.

Rush hasn't seen Little Rush since The Dominican Republic

#389,

Maybe someone can teach Rush about PDF's?

(maybe too advanced?)

capt, I once left the dentist, walked into a little store, and asked the girl behind the counter for Chapstick. Try THAT word on Novacane.

#373, I don't think fascism started with a political theory. Indeed, Mussolini's original platform was essentially identical with the Socialists', which is why his party did so poorly in elections. He basically capitalized on nationalism by supporting the rebels who took over an Italian city in Austro-Hungarian territory and offered it to Italy when Italy's Socialist government refused it. Then he created mob violence, and took credit for "restoring order" when his mobs won the violence they created. At this point, the rich - afraid of workers' rights - coopted Mussolini and his rhetoric became anti-worker, anti-union, and pro-business. At this point, it became the fascism we now understand.

The stories of Spanish, French, and German fascism aren't really all that different.

There was no guiding ideology, especially not one that was opposed to religion. Indeed, throughout, fascism made friends with organized religion, as a repository of traditional and nationalistic values.

Fascism did come to oppose private religious devotion, as that could lead to non-conformity. But organized high churches encouraged conformity, so they were always acceptable.

what is the yeild of the hybridization of bill o'reilly with hurricane katrina?.... a hurricane with a LOT of spin.

#381,

Sadly, my teeth were in poor shape. I have to go back several more times - working on a top partial denture. But Hey! I still have a few teeth I started with so . . . Better than full dentures.

why doesnt lurlene teach rush how to use the defcons on the imac screen of his moving pictures cybermachine?

384-That's the ticket!
