Number #1 Radio Progressive Morning Show, THE STEPHANIE MILLER SHOW

CARBONITE

LiveBlog for Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Read Steve Young’s new story asking the folks at MSNBC to consider Stephanie Miller for a new show!

Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) calls in at 6:30am Pacific to discuss President Obama’s stimulus plan.

Richard Greene, host of “Clout,” calls in at 8:05am Pacific to discuss the progressive celebrity focus of his radio show.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Eric Holder as attorney general yesterday, voting 75-21 to place him in charge of the Department of Justice. His confirmation makes him the first African-American confirmed to the post, though he held the job on an acting basis in 2001.

Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire has accepted President Obama’s offer to be commerce secretary and the announcement is scheduled for today. In a move that will leave the balance of the Senate unchanged, NH’s Dem governor will name a GOPer to replace Gregg.

Dem senators stood behind Heath and Human Services Secretary-designate Tom Daschle yesterday after a closed-door session of the Senate Finance Committee on the former SD senator’s tax troubles. The committee is expected to hold a hearing on Daschle’s nomination next week.

A group of GOP senators have drafted an alternative stimulus measure that narrows government spending to infrastructure programs and helping unemployed Americans, address the housing crisis, and relies mostly on tax cuts. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has dismissed the idea that the GOP is trying to block passage of the Dems’ stimulus plan.

  1. Gooood morning everyone.

Played a little again in the StephSpace last night, where’s Mama & our Voice Deity?

Waiting for another 3-6″ of s**w tonight. Wish they’d just give it to us in one big dumping.

  2. capt says:

Good morning Mama, mooks et al and Paul!

Just send any excess snow to NM – we need the water.

  3. shāf says:

Mornin’, Paul and the rest of our Live Blog crew! Good morning to Team Steph. Hope everyone is feeling well today.

  4. shāf says:

Mornin’ capt. Didn’t see you until after my fist post.

  5. shāf says:

    fist = first (Freudian much?)

  6. Morning, all! Back from a fun weekend with the folks in Dallas. Discovered Facebook and am trying not to let it suck the life out of me.

  7. Charlie in St. Paul says:

Guten Morgen, Steph-heads! Did anyone shout at their radio yesterday when Steph reported on Sarah Palin’s boots being sold on Ebay? I was under the impression she was supposed to give all of the RNC clothes back, so they could be given to charity. Maybe I just believed in Sarah Palin a little too much.

  8. shāf says:

Must be a slow news day, I’m struggling to find any big stories.

    In Tinsel Talk…

Will Ferrell’s spoof of former President George Bush may be the hottest ticket in town (his Broadway show “You’re Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush”), but it’s a lap-dancing Condoleezza Rice (played by Pia Glenn) – and her red panties – that steal the show.

She’s her own charity, dontcha know you betcha.

Peter, the StephSpace seems to be sucking my time away from the Facecrack. They’re both conspiring to suck what little life I have away from me.

  10. capt says:

    First terrorist fist bump?

I think we need more coffee! (I know I do)

    Good morning PeterW, Shaf, Charlie

Another great day in the making.

  11. shāf says:

#6 Yes, my addiction to Facebook is rivaled only by the relaunched Stephanie Miller site. ;)

  12. #11, you should totally get a commission for that plug.

  13. #9, I haven’t dug into Stephspace too deeply. I imagine if I did, I’d do neither work nor practice.

  14. Carol, hopemonger in central MA says:

Good morning, Paul, capt, shaf, Peter, and Charlie.

So you guys are fist posting? Do we live in the penalty box now?

I’m pretty mad at Tom Daschle. And we are counting on him for health care reform. I’m not so sure he does understand.

  15. shāf says:

From plumber (non-licensed) to journalist (un-trained) to now GOP advisor, Joe Wurzelbacher’s 15-minutes of fame have now gone into double-overtime…

    From Politco:

When GOP congressional aides gather Tuesday morning for a meeting of the Conservative Working Group, Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher – more commonly known as Joe the Plumber — will be their featured guest. This group is an organization of conservative Capitol Hill staffers who meet regularly to chart GOP strategy for the week.

Wurzelbacher, who became a household name during the presidential election, will be focusing his talk on the proposed stimulus package. He’s apparently not a fan of the economic rescue package, according to members of the group.

    Details:
    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0209/18324.html

If this is the resource that the GOP needs to tap to bring its staffers together, they are so boned!

  16. capt says:

Morning Carol – did I mention you look marvelous today?

  17. capt says:

    Caribou Joe!

    lolololo

  18. Carol, hopemonger in central MA says:

oh, capt! and you’ve been working out again!
What a handsome blogging group we are.

  19. #14, I’m a little mad at Obama for nominating a sleazy insider like Daschle to a post that needs a reformer, not someone who spent his career being bribed by the industry he’s supposed to reform.

  20. capt says:

Kucinich would have been a better choice – Oh well!

  21. Carol, hopemonger in central MA says:

Like with Rick Warren, Barack has a personal relationship with Tom Daschle. Let’s hope Tommy takes direction and proves equal to Barack’s expectations.

Boy, our democratic congresspeople are indeed the wimps we pegged them for. They definately need our input.

  22. shāf says:

#19 Agreed. He’s made millions as a “tactical consultant” to the health care industry since leaving the Senate. Sounds too chummy for my comfort.

  23. #21, we can hope that Daschle won’t be as selfish and small as Warren was in the position for which Obama picked him.

  24. Here’s an old-time scientist guy that Steph could really get behind:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Drinker_Cope

Edward Drinker Cope (July 28, 1840 – April 12, 1897) was an American paleontologist and comparative anatomist, as well as a noted herpetologist and ichthyologist.

Born to a wealthy Quaker family, Cope quickly distinguished himself as a child prodigy interested in science; he published his first scientific paper in 1859. Cope married his cousin and had several children, moving closer to the marl pits of Haddonfield, New Jersey to be near fossil finds.

  25. capt says:

Obama: ‘One-term proposition’ if no fix

The economy will not turn around overnight – “there are no silver bullets to this” – President Barack Obama says in the second part of an interview with NBC News that aired this morning on Today.

But if it doesn’t turn around in three years, the president suggested, he will be looking at “a one-term proposition.”

    http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2009/02/obama_oneterm_proposition_if_n.html

  26. LOL @ Joe the Plumber

Why do the Republitards keep trotting out this discredited loser?

  27. shāf says:

#24 Since we’re noting milestones in Wikipedia, congratulations to Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir who is now become Prime Minister of Iceland, and the first openly gay head of government in modern times.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Johanna_sigurdardottir_official_portrait_cropped.jpg

  28. 28 – Yeah but she’s a lesbian, so that’s OK. Right, Squeezy?

  29. good morning eMooks, livebloggers and Stephophiles…

    ;)

looks like we are all up early.

  30. shāf says:

#27 Thanks for the head-up, capt. That indeed makes me nervous (that Facebook may sell access to its demographic information for marketing purposes).

  31. DeLiRon says:

¡¡¡¡¡Buenos días mis amigos del Stephanie Miller Show!!!!!

  32. shāf says:

#32 Ach! My yamsack takes enough of a beating without deliberately trying to damage it!

  33. #34, no kidding. Isn’t that what the inseam of jeans is for?

  34. #35 meant to refer to #33, but things got mucked up when a post disappeared.

Mods (George or ProducerChris), could you find some way to delete the content of the post without deleting the post entirely, so this sort of reference mismatch doesn’t happen?

    Maybe just something like

    #32

  35. #35

that coming from someone who doesn’t wear any pants… ;)

    *snicker*

  36. Not to mention the dreaded cello scrotum (see yesterday’s show)

  37. #37 I wear pants most days still. I only wear a skirt about once a week on average, which is still way more than most women wear one these days.

  38. Laura in Binghamton, NY says:

    Morning Bloggies!

  39. capt says:

    #40,

But that is because you have better legs!

    Grrrrr – oh behave capt!

  40. leorising says:

Good morning, live blageurs! Happy Tuesdee!

Made it two days in a row :D

  41. scooter says:

Yeah, it seems to be a slow news day. As I’m watching early AM cable TV, I’m struck how right-wing tools seem to be on every show and are being allowed to spout their toolie talking points without challenge. It’s like it’s 2003 again! Why is liberalism so marginalized by the press in the USA? Why are genuine liberals so rare in government?

  42. capt says:

Made it two days in a row

Well, congrats to the BF (or is it GF?)

    *skates*

  43. I have work to do so I must go. Maybe back by lunchtime, you will have to Sparta without me.

In any event, I try to check into the chat once in a while at night. I suspect I’ll be a the computer all night tonight massaging some audio files.

    Have fun.

  44. #42, you’re damned right I do.

  45. 44 – But it’s a Left Wing Media&#0153

  46. #44

the Bush era clamp-down on MSM only ended a couple weeks ago, but methinks we’ll see the after-effects of the “dumbing-down” for the rest of our lifetimes.

    :D

  47. capt says:

    #44,

Corporate media has their own agenda. Part of which is to peddle the SCLM meme – the other is to promote any voice in favor of war or against labor.

    So sez the prophet profit!

  48. capt says:

    massaging some audio files.

    I think it is “audiophiles”

I hope you massage for a “happy release” for the audiophiles in your life!

*skates* (wait a minute I’m already in the box)

  49. 50 – Exactly! Ever notice who pays for the commercials on MSM news shows? Keep an eye on it next time you watch one and see if you can count any “left wing” organizations advertising during the show.

  50. #52

    “clean coal” BS
    Boeing is pro-America
Exxon –”ya gotta love em because ya need the juice!”

    etc etc

  51. shāf says:

And today marks the 50th anniversary (Feb. 3, 1959) of the death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in a plane crash, shortly after taking off from Clear Lake, Iowa. Their deaths would be immortalized in the Don McLean song “American Pie.”

  52. Milt Hussein says:

Wow… I’ve been gone for a while… everyone starts so early these days… good morning, all…

  53. Milt Hussein says:

And American Pie has again been immortalized by Garth Brooks at the Inaugural bash…

  54. Carol, hopemonger in central MA says:

    Hi leo!

  55. #50, we’ve also moved from the era of working-class journalists to the era of upper-class pundits. No wonder the “news” will be so slanted.

  56. this coffee’s not working fast enough.
    i’m cold.
    when’s the damn show start?

<———codger-y at the young age of 32.

  57. Carol, hopemonger in central MA says:

Hello, baby? This is the Big Bopper speaking….

  58. 54 – Important to note “song” and not “the movie franchise”. I’m not sure if they’ve “immortalized” anything except maybe boob shots and someone getting kicked in the crotch.

  59. capt says:

    #52,

I never watch the M$M or corporate info-tainment shows.

Took all the CNN, MSNBC, etc channels off of our line-up years ago.

We can get any of the “good” clips on the youtubes or as just clips. I get the good KO special comments and whatnot – without the rest of the BS.

  60. Milt Hussein says:

    #58

I agree, which is why the blogosphere is so important. If only bloggers could get folks to support us.

  61. Carol, hopemonger in central MA says:

oh, baby! You know what I like!

  62. 60 – “… do you own a timeshare and want to sell it? Call 1-800-TIMESHARE and tell ‘em the Big Bopper sent ya.”

  63. shāf says:

#58 In addition, fewer and fewer journalists come through the newspaper ranks. Good habits are established in that environment (like fact-checking) that I fear are not adhered-to in the broadcast media.

  64. capt says:

oh, baby! You know what I like!

    Oh, I WISH!

Grrrrr – yeah baby (Austin Powers voice)

    SHOWTIME!

    *jazz hands*

  65. demdame says:

Hello, hello, hello from Maryland. It finally warmed up enough yesterday to melt the ice we had and now it’s snowing. Ugh, I have so had enough of the wintry stuff.

  66. shāf says:

#61 Inadequate Blackmail, you seem to have that a-a-area on your mind this morning.

  67. shāf says:

    It’s Miller Time!

  68. Milt Hussein says:

    #68 Hello from a former Marylander in Arizona… 77 today… :)

  69. Milt Hussein says:

Michael Steele is an empty suit… the GOP will find that out soon enough… :)

  70. capt says:

Jon Stewart nailed when he asked:

    (speaking to the GOP)

“You know it isn’t just any black guy?”

    lololololo

  71. demdame says:

#71 Milt – Beam me there, please!

  72. #66, why bother fact-checking on broadcast media? The overwhelming majority of broadcast “news”, by time, is the voicing of opinions, whether editorializing by pundits or the unsupported opinions of interviewees.

  73. 69 – I got my mind on my money and my money on my mind

  74. Michael “Hard As” Steele

Rush Limpbaugh wishes he was …

  75. demdame says:

High balls were my mom’s favorite tranquilizer in the sixties.

  76. Milt Hussein says:

    #74 — I have an extra room… you’re more than welcome… :)

  77. shāf says:

    Six degrees of Bacon?

  78. straydogma says:

funny after you eat the bacon explosion that exactly what your hear does

  79. Morning Bloggoes (shaf, carol, capt, et al…),
    Happee Tuesdee :D
    Cheers,
    mfaye

  80. capt says:

Pork – the other white meat.

  81. Milt Hussein says:

Better the pork board than the pork sword…

  82. shāf says:

I’ve got your “other white meat” right here!

  83. #72, Michael Steele made up a story about oreos being thrown at him while running for Governor of MD, to try claim victim status. The story grew over a few years from a few rolling at his feet to the air raining thick with them. The dude is pathetic.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_S._Steele

  84. capt says:

Top of the morning mfaye (and all that have joined us today!)

  85. straydogma says:

    Morning Blaggoes.

  86. Corporate CEOs get paychecks for doing nothing

    It’s called a “golden parachute”

  87. capt says:

As opposed to just writing checks worth $350 billion without any oversight then offer dedacted documents with the amounts redacted.

THAT is okay with the RWNJ’s.

    UGH!

  88. Milt Hussein says:

#86… Steele has never actually run a successful political campaign… and they make him the head of the RNC? He was with Cleary Gottlieb for years, and never went beyond associate. His greatest claim to fame is that he’s Mike Tyson’s former brother-in-law. He’s not a token, is he?

  89. straydogma says:

Exactly how can you give a tax break to people who dont pay taxes..

  90. shāf says:

I’m takin’ what they’re givin’, ’cause I’m workin’ for a livin’!

  91. capt says:

dedacted? I mean redacted – of course.

  92. Milt Hussein says:

NO ONE is dumber than Hannity

  93. Those people who “don’t pay taxes” pay FICA, sales tax, property taxes (through their rent checks to their landlord).

In fact, as a portion of their income, the poor pay more in taxes than the rich, whose incomes taxes are capped at 15% while they sit on their asses waiting for the dividend checks to come in.

  94. demdame says:

    Interesting trivia -
A local Rockville,Maryland woman, Judy Schlecht, is within two degrees of Kevin Bacon. Her 1959 wedding dress was bought on eBay by the costume designer for “The Closer”. It has been featured in the last two episodes as Kyra Sedgwick’s wedding dress.

  95. Milt Hussein says:

I saw him walk on water last Sunday :P :P

  96. Milt Hussein says:

Why isn’t anyone suggesting that the tax code is just too damned complicated?

  97. capt says:

    #92,

I read somewhere the GOP paid Steele to run for something.

I hope he stays and brings on Palin or Joe the plumber – it is their destiny

  98. What BillO knows about the economy could fit into a very small thimble

  99. #90, don’t forget massive bonuses to CEOs whose companies lose money.

My company only pays bonuses – to anyone – when we turn a healthy profit.

  100. k to the g says:

Hi bye everyone! Off to catch a bus. Have a good live-blog and day! Sounds like Voice Deity is gonna rip today! :-D

  101. Carol, hopemonger in central MA says:

Speaking of American Pie, I’m a Waylon fan. I saw Waylon Jennings in, say 1972 in a small space in Harvard Square. We sat on folding chairs (maybe 100 people) and I was in front not 10 feet from him. Yes, folks, he sang to me, but even tho I know he didn’t really, I feel in love. What a handsome man! and what a voice! Saw him again maybe 10years ago, but he couldn’t play the guitar because of carpal tunnel problems. I read he had surgery and is ok now.
    From his website:
When as a young man he moved to … “Lubbock, he got a job at the radio station KLLL, where he befriended Buddy Holly during one of the station’s shows. Holly became Waylon’s mentor, teaching him guitar licks, collaborating on songs, and producing Jennings’ first single, “Jole Blon,” which was released on Brunswick in 1958. Later that year, Waylon became the temporary bass player for Holly’s band the Crickets, playing with the rock & roller on his final tour. Jennings was also scheduled to fly on the plane ride that ended in Holly’s tragic death in early 1959, but he gave up his seat at the last minute to the Big Bopper, who was suffering from a cold.

The disaster stunned Jennings, and it took him several years to regain his momentum. But his time with Holly had been pivotal: “Mainly what I learned from Buddy,” Jennings recalled, “was an attitude. He loved music, and he taught me that it shouldn’t have any barriers to it.” “

  102. #96

    O’Reilly is a close contender…

  103. straydogma says:

96 i would say Rush Limbaugh was dumber than Hannity, but really Limbaugh is just high.

  104. Heya Milt,
Are you new to these parts? If you are, welcome, if you’ve been around for awhile, ‘scuse me – I drop in and out as my job allows :D
    Cheers,
    mfaye

  105. Milt Hussein says:

Why does anyone listen to Gingrich?

He shouldn’t be able to speak without someone noting that he’s a failed politician..

  106. Gingrich is lying – 76% of the money is direct stimulus spent over 18 months.

The “pork” they’re complaining about is less than half a percent of the total spending.

The media is playing along with the lie by not pointing that out.

  107. 103 – My company is virtually recession proof and I’ll be getting a bonus this year

  108. RobertjMcLeod says:

God, I hate Bill O. What a peanut.

  109. capt says:

    #97,

    WORD!

Sadly the poor and lower income folks can’t lobby any politician. Not enough scratch to sit at the table.

    I HATE that!

  110. #105, it’s no accident that the rich and corrupt are the biggest pushers of the flat tax: because they pay even less under it.

  111. leorising says:

Catching up *reads* Gods you guys are good… :D

  112. Milt Hussein says:

Faye… I’m kinda irregular… and I was in australia for the last three months, meaning I would have had to stay up past midnight to Live blog…

  115. shāf says:

#103 I also like the proposal that executive compensation needs to be in deferred stock options, so that execs make long-term growth decisions, instead of only this quarter’s bottom line.

  116. Newt
why would we think you are alive just because you have a beating heart?

  117. Milt Hussein says:

The right wingers are scared to death of the stimulus, because they know damn well it’ll work.

  118. Marc says:

    Just a thought.

The republican strategy in congress right now it to block everything, prevent Obama from getting anything accomplished….

Which is the same strategy they used in ’06-’08, prevent the democratic controlled congress from getting anything done and then run on the ‘do nothing congress’. Well that strategy worked GREAT last time!

#100 “Why isn’t anyone suggesting that the tax code is just too damned complicated?”

You talking about regular people or politicians? Politicians like it because when its complicated, its easier to slip in your special interest into the tax code. if its simple it would stick out like a sore thumb.

  126. Shane-O says:

    yup. I’m in Rapture…

    Morning!

  127. Milt Hussein says:

Stock options should either not be allowed as compensation, or they should be taxed as regular income. Do you realize the people who win on Price is Right have to pay taxes on their prizes, but execs pay nothing on their stock options, until they sell them? That’s just wrong.

  128. demdame says:

Hubby’s company is announcing the third round of layoffs this morning. The previous round was two weeks ago. This one is going to hit the Washington and New York offices. Freelance positions have been decimated and now union members are going to be hit. About 10% will be let go.

  129. leorising says:

Milt @ 122, well, think about it. They leave power while the economy is imploding, and Obama fixes it all with a little creative spending, in, like, 3.2 days after being in office. They’ve gotta save their phoney-baloney jobs! :D

  130. 120 – I’m down with that proposal. Also, need to end the golden parachute thing. And also, ban these execs from sitting on more than one corporate board. Part of the problem is that they wash each others’ backs in different corporations, thus perpetuating the “good ole boys” network and now allowing anyone else to sit at the table.

    Morning Blogoes.

  133. #120, we need to discourage, using the tax code, people from making most of their compensation from bonuses and the like; as opposed to salary and commissions. It’s a very corrupting influence, especially at top levels.

  137. shāf says:

#134 I wondered how things were going with your hubbie, demdame. I saw the recent press on things in the industry, and it didn’t look good.

Keeping fingers crossed that he doesn’t feel the pain of layoff.

  138. shāf says:

  141. Milt Hussein says:

My idea for the tax code is to pick one percentage and take it off the top of any compensation, regardless of who pays or where it comes from. Some friends of mine figured it up, and the figure we found was doable was about 8%. Imagine, everyone has 8% taken off the top, regardless. Even the poor could live with that, as that would replace SS and Medicare. No forms, no IRS, and the tax cheats would stick out like a sore thumb.

  142. RobertjMcLeod says:

Someone mentioned Palin… I hope above all hope that Palin runs in 2012, I’ll even contribute just to keep her campaign running long enough to hear her debate Barack. That’d be a giggle!

Some new and interesting photos in the Stephspace.. many of us seem to be cat fans. Maybe because, like many of us, they are actually independent as heck.

  155. Sarah and Joe (the plumber..), now THERE’s a winning ticket for the Repubs in ’12..

  156. leorising says:

    demdame @ 159, lol, you’ll be getting a raise! that’s happy news :D

  157. #148, if 8% off the top could get us our current budgetary levels, why is it that the average person pays around 25% net?

Your math didn’t add up, and is regressive to boot. There’s a reason liberals are for progressive taxation and Steve Forbes is for a flat tax.

  158. demdame says:

And thanks to you too capt for your warm thoughts.

  169. capt says:

    #171,

Damitol? I never tried that one!

    lolololo

  170. RobertjMcLeod says:

Oh, Sarah and Joe, how folksie! Problem is that the slack-jawed mouth-breathing republicans just might push them through. They love stupid.

  171. Actually, I think the true Republicans are for excusing wealthy from ALL taxes, in perpetuity.. After all, these are the PRODUCERS, the creators of JOBS, and clearly the most wonderful class of people on the planet. WHY should they be “punished” for making a lot of money? Shouldn’t we simply excuse them from taxes forever? Shouldn’t we all grovel over and ask for a job cleaning their houses, trimming their shrubs, washing their cars, taking care of their snotty kids? Shouldn’t we just be kissing their asses?

    What’s WRONG with people?

  172. straydogma says:

#148, One of the biggest problems I see with a flat tax is an assumption that all loop holes and exceptions would be removed. The thing is that would not ever happen, there will always be exception to income tax weather implicit or explicit. Even if they where successfully removed originally we couldn’t go one election cycle before they would be back.

  173. #167, Republicans say that because – to them – income tax is the only tax. So, basically, they’re lying.

In fact, because Social Security is running a surplus, which goes straight into general revenues, people who pay no income taxes are still very much still paying taxes into the treasury, even beyond entitlements.

#170, because high income people impose far greater costs on society and government, as a fraction of their income, than working people do.

  174. leorising says:

Mama, their ideas are that they’ll be shown to be greedy fools if we fix the economy so fast, imo…

  175. capt says:

    Milt,

It’ll be alright. I have a good vibe and I am psychic (read: psycho)

Seriously, I have a few pals that have or are serving.

It would be scary as a parent – no matter what.

    *hugs*

  176. Milt Hussein says:

#177… the only way a flat tax can work is if all loopholes and exceptions are removed. Which is why it’s a pipe dream… :)

  177. Milt Hussein says:

Thanks, Capt. I feel better knowing we’ll be out of Iraq and Afghanistan soon…

  178. demdame says:

Milt – My husband paid for college on the GI bill, back in the day. I’m glad it’s still an option (or something much like it). I don’t blame you for being scared, but I have hope that Obama will take much better care of our military.

And I agree, empty nesting is painful.

  179. #181, the only way a flat tax could work is if we were to go back to the inequities of the 19th century.

Seriously, our highest periods of national prosperity were when the taxation on top incomes were the highest, not the lowest.

  180. capt says:

Flat tax or alternative minimum for all Corporations?

Small or large – nobody rides for free. No loopholes just a fair share?

    (spitballin)

  181. Of course, the grand irony is that the top “earners” manage to pay a smaller percentage of their total income than the waitress living on tips..

Actually, Repubs tend to be the deep dippers in the government trough, but again, hypocrisy is the trademark of these people. Few of them have actually worked for a living for years, often never at all.

  182. Shane-O says:

#170 – regressive tax policy places a far greater burden on lower income people than higher.

Consider a 34% rate: someone making $20,000 per year keeps $13,200

    someone making $2,000,000 keeps $1,320,000

  183. Milt Hussein says:

#184 — the rates were higher then, but rich people didn’t pay anything. That’s why the AMT was implemented in the late 1960s. We’re actually better off with a moderate tax rate with few loopholes.

  184. leorising says:

straydogma, hey there! @ 177, it could be of benefit. The current tax code is tens of thousands of pages long, and incredibly convoluted. I think a simpler new tax code (I was for flat tax, but PeterW is making some good points) would be a good reset. We should probably do it every decade or so, anyway, because you’re right, the riders and exceptions and penalties just get more arcane.

  185. Milt Hussein says:

Shane-o… I hope we never have a system wherein someone making $20,000 has to pay a third in federal tax…

  186. But Shane-O.. don’t you know, Repubs envy the poor – not having to pay taxes (ignoring all the other taxes they DO pay, just to live). Shouldn’t we simply excuse our Noble Wealthy from any fiscal responsibilities? Let the be FREE – to go forth and create jobs for all us Peed-ons..

  187. #188, that’s simply factually untrue. The rich had shelters, but they paid plenty. The actual number that weren’t paying anything were comparatively few, and the AMT was mainly outrage theater.

  188. shāf says:

“Talk the walk and walk the talk”

  189. Regressive is a descriptive word for a tax policy that punishes those least able to pay.

Come on, don’t we all agree with Gekko (sp?) – “Greed is good..”?

  190. Milt Hussein says:

I prefer to speak the walk

  191. capt says:

Mama might have better luck marrying Rachel Maddow?

  192. Shane-O says:

And I should add – a flat tax would be “fair” – by definition.

But if we want to be completely “fair” – should not every person who works 40 hours (or 50, 60) – get paid the EXACT same amount?

It’s the upper echelons of income that like the flat tax – unfair pay scales, but make damn sure the tax structure is fair!

  193. Milt Hussein says:

#192 — No Peter, it’s not untrue. The Alternative Minimum Tax was created because almost none of the top 6% of earners paid any tax at all. Go Google it. It’s a historical fact…

  194. straydogma says:

On Taxes and fairness. I still say the only way to make takes fair is to have some sort of progressiveness in the taxes. generally speaking there are 3 classes of incomes and percentages of income affect them differently. A flat tax would be fair to middle class as it would most likely be designed on their living standard. The working poor on the other hand do not have disposable income, they live pay check to pay check and often have to budget food (how much can I afford to eat this 2 weeks)medication ect. do you want people making decisions on if they should see a doctor, feed there kids 3 meals a day, or paying taxes?

  195. shāf says:

For you gear heads out there, I just saw this post on Jalopnik.com (sister site of Defamer.com):

Chris Bangle, polarizing and iconic BMW chief design honcho, is quitting “to pursue his own design-related endeavors beyond the auto industry,” the German carmaker said Tuesday.

    Details:
    http://jalopnik.com/5145161/chris-bangle-quits-bmw-auto-industry

  196. #189, most of the complexities in the tax code are for businesses.

I’d be for tax simplification, especially at the top end, but for the average person, it’s pretty simple, despite the annual whining. Especially for those that take the standard deduction.

But the progressive nature of taxation needs to remain. Indeed, “tax simplification” is the trojan horse the crooked rich use to push for regressive taxation. Don’t fall for it!

  197. Milt Hussein says:

I think we should flatten the tax, double the minimum wage, and put in single payer health insurance… guess what… economy fixed.. :)

  198. Hell, the wealthiest people begrudge the minimum wage.. when 2/3 of the people getting it are 20 or over.. Our Noble Wealthy class sure haven’t gone since 1996 before increasing THEIR wages!

Now, get ready for the Repubs to roll out their “class warfare” arguments.

Speaking of Bahner, wouldn’t it be fun to just run him through a car wash and see his TRUE colors??

  199. Dave Tripper says:

The Republicans need to dispose of their political spackle and paste.

  200. Milt Hussein says:

No, peter… a flat tax with no exceptions — with the tax being paid for ALL income, regardless of source — would not be regressive. Right now, CEOs don’t pay anything on stock options or deferred compensation, while clerks at 7-11 pay 15% for SS and Medicare on their $6 an hour.

  201. Shane-O says:

#190 – I only picked the 34% number because that was the estimate candidate Mike Huckabee came up with during the 2008 Republican Primaries when pushing the flat tax

Imagine if the rate was 70%?

  202. shāf says:

Here’s a handful of stimulus items Republicans have listed as “wasteful”:

$500 million for flood reduction projects on the Mississippi River.

    • $10 million to inspect canals in urban areas.

    • $6 billion to turn federal buildings into “green” buildings.

    • $500 million for state and local fire stations.

    • $850 million for Amtrak.

Well, Mike Huckabee eats roasted squirrel from a corn popper… he ain’t the brightest bulb in the box…

  205. “Losie McLosenhimen”???

More like, “Lucy may lose a hymen.” :D

  206. straydogma says:

I guess the biggest thing with flat tax is that, yeah the tax it self would be simple but……..
so many other things would have to change for it to be fair.
Complicated controls on companies, changes to make pay fair. complicated regulations on minimu wages, on health care, on housing pricing, on cost on utilities, on pricing of food and other nessisties must also be controlled. not going to happen.

  207. Hussein in Spain Stays Mainly on the Plain (formerly A Pimp Named Hussein) says:

A flat tax can be progressive. You just have to set the minimum income at the right point. Say you don’t pay taxes on the first $50,000, after that there’s a flat tax. That would be very simple and progressive.

  208. #188, I did google it. It was 155 households that paid little-to-no income tax in 1969 that spawned it.

That’s not 6% of households – there were more than 2583 households in the country in 1969.

  209. Shane-O says:

    #210 – OK – Steve Forbes uses a similar number…

  210. #196 Capt,

  211. leorising says:

shaf, the bangle butt was the single most pedestrian addition to a car ever. It baffles how it became almost iconic, for its ugliness is mighty. Is it me, or does Bangle sound like he’s going to “spend more time with family”? Wonder who blackmailed him to leave, and with what…

  212. capt says:

Well, Mike Huckabee eats roasted squirrel from a corn popper… he ain’t the brightest bulb in the box…

Oh noes! I’m suppose to COOK the squirrel before eating.

I mean it makes sense and all but . . .

  213. Milt Hussein,

I will defend Mike Huckabee on that. My wife has had squirrel, and she loved it. “Meat on the hoof,” she calls it.

The popcorn popper was a creative way to cook it in a dorm room.

I disagree with a lot of his policies, but not with his cuisine.

  214. Milt Hussein says:

No… no exceptions. That’s part of the problem with the current tax code. No minimum income. The 8% I propose would still be less than poor people pay now, because that would replace all federal taxes, including payroll taxes.

  215. demdame says:

I do NOT want to see McCain’s shrunken stimulus package.

  216. #215, Steve Forbes, the noted progressive.

    Hahahaha.

  217. I think you start with income being anything you “earn” by way of working, inheritance, stock option value, etc. Everyone who makes more than X ($20,000 or whatever) pays a certain % of their income in taxes. On top of that, those who make more than a certain figure (let’s say, the top 10% or top 5% or whatever) pays extra. No way to get around it. No loopholes, nothing.

The problem with that, of course, is that the wealthy aren’t encouraged to donate to charity (they wouldn’t be getting a tax break for doing so).

  218. I’ve got 10 more pictures to upload

  219. Speaking of boosting the economy, suppose we had a health care system with a government backed policy, available to any and all. Now, think of all the smaller business which would benefit mightily from having their health care costs manageable. They could afford to HIRE people!

Nothing would preclude the wealthy having all the health care they want to pay for beyond that (it never has, anyway). And people with very good jobs could still receive benefits that included better than the baseline coverage of the universal health care.

And, consider that such a universal health care benefit would also be a boon to ANY business, including the larger ones..

I know, I know. It’s *socialism*, right.. Like the silly notion that the people actually own the wealth of the land, entitled to clean air and water, basic health..

Naw, I guess we need that plutocracy that has been installed and entrenched since the 60s, and really kicked in with Reagan in the 80s.

  220. Shane-O says:

#213 – since that number is about $4000 above the mean income, nationally, the percentage of taxation above that point would have to be quite high… but not a bad idea, I think.

  221. capt says:

    #216,

  222. Hussein in Spain Stays Mainly on the Plain (formerly A Pimp Named Hussein) says:

I don’t understand why the Republican “class warfare” argument works. Of course it’s class warfare. What’s wrong with class warfare?

  223. capt says:

Well either does Cindy McCain – just look ta what it did to her eyes?

#217 Although some of his cues were softened in the latest generation of the BMW line, I agree, he really uglied-up the cars.

  225. I love it when reasonable conservatives/republicans call in. It reinforces my faith in humanity.

  226. #224, so the “flat tax” being proposed around here is slowly evolving into progressive taxation with only a couple tax brackets.

Once you have a tax table, why are 3 tax brackets any more complicated than, say, a hundred. Look up your income on the tax table, that’s what you pay. HR wants to know how much to withhold, do the same thing, adjust for allowances, divide by number of paychecks. Where’s the complication?

The complicated part of progressive taxation is not the tax tables. It’s the deductions. Tilt at the right windmill, people.

  227. scooter says:

Regarding taxes, I’d be in favor of taking an objective look at the quality of life rankings on the world’s nations and then copying what the top country is doing. In 2006 the USA was ranked 23rd in quality of life. Scandinavia and most western European nations were well ahead of us.

Leave it to Republicans to argue that having a lower quality of life than “old Europe” is somehow a good thing!!

  228. Milt Hussein says:

Forbes also exempted “unearned income.” That’s the problem with the current tax code; too much income is classified as “unearned,” and for some reason, ‘unearned income’ is not taxes, while income that people actually work for is taxed mightily.

  229. Do you guys realize that almost half the people in this country are BELOW AVERAGE?

Those are the ones most vulnerable to being taken in the Republican propaganda, on Fox “News”.. And Limbaugh.

  230. Shane-O says:

#224 – looks like you just defined our current tax structure there… (except for “loopholes” — and BTW – what some consider loopholes are really a way for the government to encourage certain behavior e.g. home ownership, charity, investment in retirement…)

  234. Well, truth be told, I’d be happiest with everyone paying the same % regardless of income. But that makes people cry, so I thought the graduated calculation would at least appease some folks.

  235. capt says:

    #235,

And the working people have to PAY taxes on their unemployment as income.

    AAARRRGGGHHH!

  238. 236 – Strangely, half of the population is above average, and half is below average! Whodathunkit?

  239. straydogma says:

I dont think any amount of logic will swade Milt from the flat tax idea.

  240. HoneyBearKelly says:

The trouble is not tax brackets.

It’s tax loopholes that had a company like Goldman Sachs, por ejemplo, pay 5% tax last year.

    Flat tax is another boondoggle.

  241. #241, that short-sighted notion of “fairness” leads to countries with great disparities of wealth and power. There are just too many examples of it to ignore.

The countries with the highest standards of living have – by your metric – the most unfair tax systems.

What I don’t get is this need to be “fair” to the rich. What’s the worst that happens when we tax the crap out of them: they’re STILL RICH.

  242. Can’t imagine why that crappy movie went straight to video

  243. 245: and that “average” guy, he’s pathetic..

orthogonal interdimensional leap: I love it! Elmo asking who wants to have sex.. (on KTLA news break, sorry if you weren’t there..)

  244. #245, actually, half the population is below the median, the other half above. By definition, actually.

Median and average are not the same thing. For example, median income is way smaller than average income, because the very wealthy bias the average upwards.

  252. Hussein in Spain Stays Mainly on the Plain (formerly A Pimp Named Hussein) says:

My favorite tax idea is to eliminate income taxes and pay for government entirely with estate taxes. You let everyone keep all of their money from whatever source, until they are dead. When they are dead they don’t need it anymore, that’s when we get it.

You’d have to put restrictions on gifts and I’m not sure how to deal with the gold-digger problem, but I like the basic idea.

  254. straydogma says:

253 no offence Milt I don’t mean to sound like I am attacking you. It is just after studying the fact I have a fundamental disagreement that a flat tax is: a) possible to implement. b) simple c) fair

  255. Shane-O says:

#248 – I personally think we should be fair to all citizens – “rich” or not (and how the hell do we define that anyway?)

But a “simple” tax law – or any simple law generally leads to many unintended negative consequences.

  256. leorising says:

Hey capt, the repubs new motto should be, “Legislating Profit since 1980″, whatcha think?

  257. #253, people bitch about it not because they pay it, but because they have to file for it, calculate deductions, and the like.

You’ve been suckered into the flat tax with the lure of tax simplification.

It would, alternatively, be possible to remake a progressive tax with a high standard deduction where you only need to file at all if you have unreported income, or are looking to maximize deductions. Most allowances and standard deductions could be taken at the front end.

People would stop complaining right quick if they didn’t have to file.

#230 I don’t give Steph much hope on that one as Rachel has been quoted as saying that she considers her relationship with Susan to be her most important accomplishment/thing in her life – oh well :D

The white type on dark background is starting to make my eyes bleed, owww

  267. #263, I disagree on what is “fair”. The rich gain more of their income from exploiting the commons, whether it be infrastructure their commerce runs on, or the education of their workers. They impose greater proportional costs on government and society, whether it be the courts, the military, or the EPA.

I say it’s very fair they pay more, as a fraction of their income.

  268. shaf, off to the penalty box for you.. :D
    Cheers,

  269. Shane-O says:

#268 – my fault – getting too serious.

    :D

  270. capt says:

I don’t give Steph much hope on that one

That is my point – not much hope but still maybe more than a hope of marrying KO – I think he would have at least asked Mama out by now. I’m certain he knows of her interest.

  271. 6 more pictures to go
I just uploaded the pics of the ordnance factory gate

  272. Heya Milt,
Do you live in Tucson? Did you catch that few seconds of porn during the Stupor Bowl? :D

  299. straydogma says:

260 interestingly enough the estate / inheritance tax where implemented not so much as a way of getting income but based on democratic principles. When this country was first founded we where rebelling against the oppression of dictator ships end economic control aristocracy. The aristocracy got their place, worth and money as a matter of birth and people where judged on the basis on pedigree.

Our democratic experiment beleived we where born equal and we should obtain our station, wealth ect based on our merits. Thus an estate tax so that we all start out on an even playing field.

No need to explain why the rich oppose this idea, a mater of self preservation for their family line. of course they want to give them an unfair advantage. We must just realize that this is fundimentlaly undemocratic and anti free market.

  300. kar-hussein says:

Yay Laura! The newbie gets it!

  311. Dave Tripper says:

Listen, after over a decade of robotic commitment to his craft, let him bong away!

  312. kar-hussein says:

I don’t know how I feel about the Estate Tax. I am of the belief that if the society in which you were able to build your wealth has rewarded you generously, then you are obligated to give back.

Some of the rich do not give back, so taxes have been structured accordingly.

Let’s just get rid of for-profit health care. Let’s start with eliminating that insanity and then we can worry about the Estate Tax.

  313. # 290 Milt “too stunned!” I’ve gotta rememebr that one :D

  317. kar-hussein says:

321—-But athletes aren’t supposed to pollute their bodies. They do, but we don’t like to know they do.

  318. straydogma says:

321 Milt that is so true. Though he did get busted already for drinking and driving, not sure if it was a scotch though.

  319. Milt Hussein says:

#324… yeah Faye, I was cracking up… apparently a man’s penis has the same effect on her as a spitting cobra… hehehe

  320. shāf says:

#328 Yep, it’s tough to be a role model. If you show human failings, you are branded a hypocrite.

  321. demdame says:

  332. There’s a city/town/whatever in the LA area named “Placenta”?

  333. Deb says:

Wow – lots of blazing, flaming RED here on a progressive website. Maybe it’s just me, but it’s kinda hard to read the white on the maroon background…kinda dark. Home page looks good as far as the organization of information and links, but the red & maroon, oy…

  334. VICE:

Let’s get it straight about Michael Phelps. This is about **controlling vice** & privacy.

    When corporations can destroy you…
When government & corporations have obliterated a culture that respects privacy…

When YOUR choices of enjoying YOUR OWN BODY are *criminalized*…

how can we live in a representative government? who is immune to EVERY VICE? every enjoyment of their body? who decides WHICH vices are ‘legal’?

    why a SOCIETY DOES.

But a society with criminalized vice without a Will for Privacy is a society where NOBODY can REPRESENT PEOPLES’ interests against money & power.

…without the RIGHT TO CHOOSE HOW YOU LIVE IN YOUR BODY…

…without a society that values PRIVACY (not *just Americans* the US has spied against ANYONE who used digital media or communications, folks… just wait until the Rest of the World figures THAT out… )

… then there is no REPRESENTATIVE BALANCE against money & power .

  335. Milt Hussein says:

Oh, please… black people don’t smoke weed… I don’t think skin color matters in this case. The media is bent on building people up, and then destroying them the first chance they get.

That said in both cases they make a big deal because they are athletics’s thus “role models”.

  352. Deb says:

The country gave the democrats a mandate and we are waiting for it to be fulfilled. We need to wake up the GOP and ask why they are being obstructionists in moving the country forward. 8 years of republican rule has driven the country into the ground and they clearly wish to stay stuck in the past and protect their own interests. It’s great to build a rapport and be inclusive but at some point leadership in making the hard decisions has to happen and they can join us….or not

  353. straydogma says:

    athletics = athletes

  354. shāf says:

Nonetheless, that doesn’t give Mecha a right to dislike all white people. I didn’t steal a town from anyone.

  382. anyone seen flombaye lately?
I had an awful thought yesterday and I hope it’s not true.

  383. pot laws do several important things:

they remove independent thinkers from voting rolls (ooh! you’re a CRIMINAL!!)
they kill belief in a socially responsible legal or community policing

they ALLOW THE CIA & DEA to *militarize & maintain their own control* of the millennially old trade in organic vices so they can let the ATF protect controls for the ‘permissible trade’ for the domestically rich Republicans.

they also allow the CIA & DEA to black fund the crap that even the Congress (who funds WHINSEC / School of the Americas, thank you very much!) doesn’t want to admit supporting.

Your money: killing democracies & indigenous social structures GLOBALLY.

    thanks.

  384. straydogma says:

#378 sorry crocks may be compfy but they are toys, not shoes. They are ugly and unprofessional looking. IMHO

In fact, I saw about 3 minutes of one, and that was it.

Car Talk is witty talk about cars. This does not translate to cartoon ratings gold.

    UGH!

  396. capt – flombaye said he’s living in Pakistan and we haven’t seen him since the American UN worker was kidnapped

  397. straydogma says:

#390 lol they are gardening shoes, at least that is what they originally where designed for. People for some reason just started thinking it was ok to wear them in public.

  398. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING POT LAWS ACCOMPLISH:

they give cops a ‘reason’ & justification for VIOLATING YOUR RIGHTS

just remember, VICE is a personal decision, not a gateway to terrorism.

its the garbage of ‘criminalizing vice’ that permits power & money to *terrorize you & activists*

    Think about Eliott Spitzer.

think about wiretapping, financial records surveillance & BIOMETRIC CATALOGUING projects funded by private ‘intelligence’ services & your government.

if pot stays illegal: its just one more way to intimidate & perpetrate violence against environmental, corruption, peace & corporate oversight activists.

… more interestingly: why do you suppose so much money goes into pot criminalization & militarized social ‘oversight’ over the choices you make for your body?

because… somebody with money wills it so.

  399. kar-hussein says:

404—I love Car Talk because they frequently point out all the awful truth about auto repairs. Like when a caller tells them all about a car problem and they say in a clever way, “You’re screwed. Your mechanic screwed you. The dealer screwed you. hahahaha”

But they say it all in such a funny way.

  400. kar-hussein says:

  403. demdame says:

#404 – I agree. Car Talk is a highly amusing radio show. The tv program – not so much. Real, caller-supplied material works. Fakey, silly scripts didn’t.

    phelps!

  405. capt says:

In fact the Joe the Plumber think tank it is very reminiscent of a septic tank.

  421. It wasn’t extortion, it was a request. Obama is not obliged to continue with Gregg.

  422. kar-hussein says:

416—I’m guessing most of us here are probably lovers of NPR in general. Long form, intelligent journalism. So old-fashioned.

  423. capt says:

Obama has said he is against legalizing pot. He is in favor of medical pot but that is a little different.

  424. straydogma says:

Well GOP with Joe the plumber… yet another thing they get right…(rolls eyes)

hey though I guess the more they do this the more out of touch they are…better it is for the country. I say go for it with palin and bob.

  425. capt says:

Lots of cowboy costumes here in NM – the best and most authentic are worn by Mexican nationals not fake wannabes from Texas.

  426. Torture Chic: Why Is the Media Glorifying Inhumane, Sadistic Behavior?

  427. kar-hussein says:

423—I think Sarah Palin would be a wonderful nominee for Pres. in 2012. I hope the GOP goes with her. Then the press will take the gloves off. It would be great fun to watch!

Reminder: Tomorrow night at 9 pm EST PBS is airing “George Carlin: The Mark Twain Prize”.

Yes, as well they should be. :D

if flombaye’s stephspace site is set up like many are if you email him he will get a copy at it at the email address he designated. Hopefully that will be his major often used email address.

  431. if you DON’T SMOKE POT…

why is it you don’t care about pot smokers?

do you really think the canary in the coal mine of human & employee rights isn’t exemplified by the ‘we don’t need privacy culture’ social abuses of your fellow citizens who do smoke pot?

    really?

just remember: they don’t have to FIND POT to get a no knock warrant.

they just have to say they THINK YOU HAVE IT to bust in your door with militarized efficiency & deadly ‘I’ve got my game face & gear on’ anxiety

  432. straydogma says:

442 thanks demdame i will have to catch that.

  433. There are a lot of morons that have never set foot on a field or a farm who like to play dress-up and pretend they’re cowboys. Those are the folks to whom I refer.

  434. Milt Hussein says:

There are lots of cowboy boots north of the Mason-Dixon line… I’m thinking Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, for starters. But they’re uncomfortable and make your feet stink… ick… I wore them for a month once many years ago… never again…

  435. leorising says:

Okay, now about those pot laws: one unintended consequence (UC) of legalizing marijuana for medical use is that the black market criminal element then infiltrates every aspect of the legal market, or tries to. I belong to a group here who teaches each member to grow for themselves if they can (sadly, I cannot.) I’ve gotten ripped off by each and every grower I’ve tried, simply because the lure of black market money is too great.

If you’re going to legalize for medical use only, then you must include a price-regulated pharmacy system as well.

  436. shāf says:

BTW, have ya’lls heard Christian Bale’s f-bomb-riddled tirade on the set of Terminator Salvation? ProducerChris will need to do some serious “bleep” work before this can air.

This is definitely NSFW (Not Safe For Work) unless you have earphones on:

  437. straydogma says:

I dont want to be too harsh on cowboy boots. I would be perfectly fine with them if you where actually riding a horse when you are wearing them.

That rimindes me have you ever seen someone in cowboy boots trying to walk on ice and snow. one of the funniest things ever. Its like watching a girl wearing high heals while walking on the beach. lol

  438. leorising says:

Excuse me, the correct word is not “pharmacy” but “dispensary.”

  439. HEY Mitt. I grew up in Colorado and my cowboy boots were one of the most comfortable shoes/boots I’ve ever owned

  440. adrums says:

I was noticing all the Obama ’08 yard signs still up everywhere, (which makes me very happy) so I made this video, based on Will Farrell’s “Landlord” -yes, that’s my cute little 2 year old- yes, I’m probably going to hell for this. Hope you get a laugh here…http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/d474cc5b6f/the-obama-sign

  441. kar-hussein says:

450—I think that was the film crew getting back at Bale. I’ll bet one of them sent that to TMZ.

  442. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

450-Good morning, All. I haven’t heard about the tirade, but I’m not surprised.

  443. LeoRising: “egalizing marijuana for medical use is that the black market criminal element then infiltrates every aspect of the legal market”

you make it sound as it that’s not the point. as yourself: exactly what does the DEA & CIA do if it isn’t making profits off that criminalization?

gee, the military industrial complex makes a fortune off it.

& the DEA & CIA get to have… all the drugs they want to their own trafficking & financing purposes, right?

sure, some other folks are making money… but the CIA & DEA ENSURE that those are the meanest MthrFKers on Earth who do…. just the kind of folks they understand & with whom they can do business.

  444. shāf says:

#447 Ironically, I grew up on a farm and rarely wear “farm clothing” (Carhartt clothing, tractor caps, etc.). Guess I just outgrew it.

  445. leorising says:

I’m going to renew my mmj card tomorrow, btw. It’s costing me $140, and I’m lucky, that’s discounted because I get food stamps. It’s not the state charging the fee (with the discount it’s only $20!), it’s the “foundation” set up to provide you with a “pain management specialist” MD who will sign your paperwork for you. Most PCPs in the state are scared of Federal law and will not sign their patients’ mmj paperwork.

  446. straydogma says:

453 Really Cindy? Ever wear sneakers or dare i say…. crocs

  447. frakkedinmi says:

    Ugh.

    Is this a threat????

  448. frakkedinmi says:

Can’t they be smart and silent?

Cuz really, I hate when political news shows turn into E!

  449. LeoRising.

ask yourself: doesn’t it just put you in a database & under the control of anybody who wants or can get access to that data?

its not as if the FBI isn’t **demanding** other nations cough up all the biometric & privacy data they get on their citizens…

can you say, “server in the sky”? you should, because the American taxpayers pay for it.

  450. leorising says:

Blueberry, I was agreeing with you. Easy. Here, have a cuppa tea…

  451. Hussein in Spain Stays Mainly on the Plain (formerly A Pimp Named Hussein) says:

you could record interviews at other times and play them the next morning.

  452. frakkedinmi says:

Thank god for morning shows. (o.O)

  453. kar-hussein says:

454—I’m sorry, but that’s not funny to me. The innocence of children lasts for a short time. When she gets into middle school she will hear language and learn about things that you may not even be able to imagine now. Why expose her to the lack of control and lack of peace that so many of us adults suffer from when she’s only two? She should be learning her colors and letters. Not swear words.

I’ve been an elementary school teacher. I get pretty huffy about these things. Sorry.

  454. shāf says:

Mama practices JIT (Just In Time) production for the show. ;)

  455. kar-hussein says:

OK, I’m off. Take care all.

  456. Software Diplomat says:

    Here’s the thing:

Republicans do not want 9 million new jobs created.
Republicans do not want 9 million new small businesses, which could hire people.

Democrats are willing to do either; just tell them what you want.

Republicans want the number of employers to say the same, and want the employees money to be fed back into the hands of Thurston Howell and his family.

  457. shāf says:

Bye, kar. Have a good day!

    Scrotum!

  458. leorising says:

Blueberry @ 463, yes, it does put me in a database. Buying it on the black market can put me in the poor house, and possibly the morgue.

And besides, I’ve given up on the practical concept of privacy. It’s not the crime they come after so much any more, as the person. One investigates the person to find a crime, these days. My best bet is to stay as legal as possible and fly under anybody’s radar. As long as I don’t piss anyone off, I’m good. 1984? Why yes, why do you ask?

  459. straydogma says:

    bye kar

  460. straydogma

    1st off I loooooovvvve boots ;-)
I have worn sneakers all my life
I have sneakers now, except they are the over 800 New Balance pairs meaning that they are just one tick softer than four 2x4s tied to your feet.. which explains why I don’t wear crocs

  461. leorising says:

    bye kar! *waves*

  468. Wow

Mormons spent 100x as much as they admitted on Prop 8

… and when exactly do they lose their tax exempt status?

  469. Deb says:

Gee – how Christian of them…lying, manipulation, misinformation…

  470. capt says:

I wonder how much $$$$ Warrens “church” paid to prop up prop 8?

  471. LOL Homo, Lesbo, and every other kind of Bo

  472. shāf says:

#483 Another example of why I no longer consider myself “religious”.

  473. straydogma says:

472 its true but sad. we have gone from a culture of investing crimes to find any possible people involved, to investigating people to see if we can find any possible crimes in witch they could be involved.

  474. Gee I wonder if that guy has BillO books in his home

  475. In fact the orginal “Pearl” has now retired after doing the “interrogation video” .. and I think it’s because “preal” is repeating all those words in preschool and is getting her parents in major trouble.

Hopefully she will relearn that you can’t say those things (even though her parents fed her the lines and she received praise for saying them) because it will be SHE that gets into trouble in kindergarten and elementary

Depends on the punch? Fruit punch?

On noes – am I being tu-tu much?

    Dork. It’s a good joke.

  484. Sarah in Santa Cruz what’s your stephspace page address?

  485. leorising says:

capt, nice to see you’re keeping on your toes!

  486. scooter says:

#497 My favorite knock-knock joke of recent:

    Knock-knock.
    Who’s there?
Control-freak. OK, here’s the place where you say “Control-freak who”?

  487. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

498-I’ll have to get back to ya … (I’ll be right back.)

  488. capt says:

    A good clean joke:

Why does Buckwheat wash his clothes in Tide?

    Because it’s too cold out-tide o’tay?

    lolololo

  489. GAHHHH .. a palinism

  490. capt says:

capt, nice to see you’re keeping on your toes!

That’s my point, on point. Pointedly!

  492. Milt Hussein says:

I’ll take a date with Charlize, thanks :)

  493. demdame you still here?

  494. demdame says:

Yes. I’m here. Just reading the other posts. What’s up?

  495. Deb says:

No Cheney is not stupid…just evil.

  496. demdame I just wanted to say I’m with you and hope everything is okay … we are also hoping rounds of layoff spare my husband too.

  497. capt says:

Cheney and Bush LIED to start a WAR.

That isn’t nearly as bad as saying you’re selling a senatorial seat, eh?

    (sarcasm)

  498. shāf says:

Black Swede? Wasn’t that a cologne sold back in the 80′s?

Wait, that was Black Suede, nevermind.

  499. demdame says:

#511 Cindy – I haven’t heard from my husband yet this morning. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad sign. Is your husband’s co. doing layoffs now or soon?

  500. capt says:

How is having to replace Gregg with a GOP NOT a quid pro quo?

  501. yes but it may be a really really a liberal Republican

  502. Software Diplomat says:

    Daschel = Blago

  503. scooter says:

Chris is right. Removing the incumbent Gregg almost assures a Dem win next time around. Plus the Gov. can perhaps appoint a RINO-Repug?

  504. shāf says:

#517 yes but it may be a really really a liberal Republican

Is that on the order of a Bigfoot sighting?

  505. demdame -

yes, they started in November, I wrote about it here “When you have a moment, we need to talk.”

  506. Truth says:

Question of the day: Why is “Unfunny McHorseface” so bitter and angry after the election of BHO? After all, as McHorseface has repeatedly said, the Libs “won”!

Answer: Since the election the only name that has resonated again and again is Rush Limbaugh. “El Rushbo” has gotten quite a boost since he was called out by the Prez. and the DNC.

And what about our “hostess” on the left/lib radio show? Barely even a mention from anyone. It’s almost as if she does not exist anymore.

No wonder that she is angry and bitter and full of hate.

I hope that someone finds a way to help poor McHorseface deal with this crisis.

  507. straydogma says:

#520 I am pretty sure you have a better evidence of Bigfoot than a liberal republican…

  508. They want to sow the seeds from the very beginning that he’s a failure so that in 2010 and 2012 it’s already out there and cemented in the minds of some

  509. straydogma says:

#520 not that I believe either actually exists… lol

  510. demdame says:

#521 Cindy – I will read you Daily Kos post in full after the show. But from what I’ve read so far, you’re both living with heavy hearts. I’m so sorry.

  511. leorising says:

Next time anyone asks Obama or his people about Rush, they should reply, “Rush, who?” *nods*

  512. straydogma says:

524 I am pretty sure that is their strategy. Repeat lies until people start believing it.

  513. This is the second time this hour the FoneShow ad has mentioned the inauguration in the future tense.

Look, I’m an optimist, but let’s not get into 2013 just yet. ;)

  514. Milt Hussein says:

I remember the days of Liberal Republicans. One of my mentors when I was younger was a liberal Republican. He was the one who told me, in 1974, that the main strategy of the “new” Republican Party was to disgust as many voters as possible and keep them from wanting to go to the polls and vote…

    How they’ve evolved, huh?

  515. sahf – you know there are, because it’s what the Republicans and limbaugh are feeding on .. they are getting them out of the party as fast as they can …. that;s what this struggle is all about … and right now the hyper partisan, extremem right winger anti intellectuals are winning

  516. 527

Or better still, “yes I love Geddy Lee”

  517. leorising says:

My dears, as I’ve said before, they have to save their phoney-baloney jobs! :D

  518. mitt my poli sci prof – a communist (in 1981) also told me that

  519. straydogma says:

ok i have been listening to steph on LTLK in LA. I keep hearing these commercials about illegal dumping. The way the say it on the commercial I cant help but keep thinking its illegal to go #2 in L.A.

  520. shāf says:

#521 Cindy, my heart goes out to you and your husband. As an IT professional who endured three layoffs in ten years, I understand the feelings.

  521. demdame says:

When we first got together, my hubby and I wouldn’t mention our exes by name. I would say “whatshisname” and he would say “whatshername”. Pretty juvenile, but we were both in our twenties and didn’t want to give our “others” any opportunity to affect our new happiness.

Maybe Obama should think about that regarding Rush.

  522. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

498-Cindy, I think my StephSpace ID is just Sarah. Yesterday, I managed to upload a photo (double happiness character), and I asked capt how he liked John Fugelsang’s show, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. My tech skills are pretty pathetic. (I don’t even know how to upload a photo to the live blog!)

  523. shāf says:

Remember: Mama and technology, not on speaking terms.

  524. demdame – well know we are kind of use to the feeling so
we are finding that we are cracking dark humor jokes a lot right now

This morning my husband came down wearing a pair of underwear I put in his drawer .. it had many many holes and he was asking what he should do with them .. I grabbed the hole at his hip and tore them to shreds and then told him to throw them away

  525. Milt Hussein says:

I just invited them all to gmail… :)

  526. leorising says:

demdame, the fastest way to shut down a borderline personality is to ignore them. They sort of go down in flames, or maybe like the wicked witch. “My evil, my beautiful evil…”

  527. Milt Hussein says:

Yeah, Cindy… the liberal Republican Senator was about to retire, because he was so fed up… I think that’s why he told me that… :)

  528. leorising says:

The French Quarter had sprinkled the blood of a lamb on its doorposts before the Angel of Katrina passed over…

  529. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

537-demdame, I worry that everytime the press says Rush’s name, he gets more attention and his power grows. (Who’s paranoid?)

  530. this is a french man saying that NOLA was destroyed because of debauchery ?

    irony much?

  531. shāf says:

BTW, I downloaded cricket sound-FX that I used for a performance of Sam Shepard’s “True West”. I enhanced it to make then loader and more plentiful. It drove everyone crazy!

  532. shāf says:

    Can we spam-bomb “W”‘s e-mail, please?

  533. scooter says:

No question that the modern Repug party is run by a pile of bible-thumpin’ mouth-breathin’ corporatists, but I think there are a few of the old-timey Republicans still left in the northeast. Didn’t quite a few registered Republicans vote for Obama?

  534. 522. Truth says: Question of the day: Why is “Unfunny McHorseface” so bitter and angry after the election of BHO? After all, as McHorseface has repeatedly said, the Libs “won”!

    ProducerChris! Cleanup in aisle 522!

  535. My wife had to wait on the phone 35 minutes to get through to MA unemployment todsy.

  536. Sarah – no that WAS the way it was… but now it’s more point and giggle because we know how to answer him now

  537. demdame says:

I picture W with his Wii playing “Dance Revolution” all day long. Laura is in the new room, reading a book and wearing earplugs.

  538. demdame says:

    #555 – new = next

  539. straydogma says:

    bye all

  540. 548
That doesn’t explain the Mississippi Gulf Coast being wiped off the map though.

  541. Milt Hussein says:

Later, y’all… it was fun… have a great day :)

  542. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

539-shāf, I looked at your profile on StephCast, and I feel like technology and I are from different planets, nevermind speaking terms. And I couldn’t find Cindy … or demdame … I’m going there now.
    Have a good one, Friends.

  543. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

I meant to say that shāf’s profile was very cool. Especially loved the photos!

  544. shāf says:

    Great show and blog, everyone!

Have a super-d-dooper day! (jeez, why did I channel Barney?)

  545. Dake Hussein says:

So that priest-who’s-now–a-bishop was saying that God hates black & poor people, is he? Or is that just the logical conclusion of his remarks that Katrina was the Wrath of G.O.D. ?

  546. leorising says:

Awww, show’s over! And it was such a good show! You guys have just been brilliant today, too. Thanks for a good start — now go off and play!

*toddles off to chat room to see what’s cookin’*

    ^_^

  547. Sarah in Santa Cruz says:

    Thanks, Cindy!

  548. shāf says:

#563 Thanks, Sarah. Glad you liked then.

  549. Okay, folks; will try to get my community page updated some later today.

Until then, have a snowy day!

  550. demdame says:

Oh well. Have we reached 600 this year yet?
Bye bye everyone. Maybe I’ll see you in the chat room.

  551. capt says:

fastest way to shut down a borderline personality is to ignore them

Please don’t ignore me – I’ll shut down.

    :(

    The show is over, over?

  552. demdame says:

#571 – Roger, roger. See you capt!

  553. Dake Hussein says:

    Go to the chatroom capt…

  554. See y’all later. I’ll try to make the chat room tonight – if I get home…. s**w, s**w, beautiful s@@w.
