Happy vacation week, everyone! ProducerChris reporing in from a rather chilly and windy Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Here’s a fresh sandbox for you to play in! Be nice to Frangela, and you might just be able to have a popsicle from the fridge.

We really don’t deserve ProducerChris.
*Holiday manhug*
but, we love him none the less!
Thanks, ProducerChris! Hope you and your family in VA are keeping warm (despite the unseasonably cold temps).
It’s 3 degrees in central Ohio (zero in my village this morning). Although not unheard of for December, the shock of the change (and sub-zero wind chill) have most of us shivering this AM.
My nephew in Chicago said he was daring for -40 wind chill, to which I replied, “It’s Chicago, you don’t have to dare too much!”
Good morning ProducerChris!
Thank you for the new sandbox! Hope your trip to VA was uneventful.
Started snowing a little after noon on Friday, didn’t stop (except for a bit of rain) until late Sunday afternoon. Then everything froze. Man, I’m glad winter’s finally here.
Gooood morning Frangela and all you livebloggers.
Frangela . . .
*swoon*
Me thinks it will be a GREAT day and a GREAT show!
#3,
Okay, I can’t complain – comparatively speaking it is balmy here. We might get a little dusting of snow on the 24th.
Rick Warren Likens Gays To Pizza
“Just because I like pizza it doesn’t mean I should marry it”
In an interview with Ann Curry on NBC’s Dateline, Evangelist Preacher, Rick Warren, who is set to deliver the invocation at Barack Obama’s inauguration, equated gays getting married to eating pizza everyday.
“Mr. Warren’s relating gays to pedophiles, incest and gay marriage to his incessant craving of sex with women he was not married to caught me a little off guard.,” said Ms Curry, “But after the camera stopped filming he went on to make the comparison of gays to pizza, I must say, I was startled.”

happy mondee moonring, fellow bloggers.
Hi capt and ElPedro. We’re up to our eyeballs in snow, huh, Paul?
shaf, how did the audition go last week?
1 Agreed capt, he goes above and beyond the call at times like these. * bows southward *
Mini-heatwave coming. 12 degrees this morning but maybe 50’s by Christmas.
#7 That was a truly bizarre analogy. Kinda’ reminds me of the old schoolyard taunt, “If you love _____ so much, why don’t you marry it.”
That’s really what the argument against same sex unions boils down to, childish taunts from childish people, who are close-minded.
Rick Warren loves the gays like a slavemaster loves his slaves. He know what is best for them. Only he can really decide because he is large and in charge.
The arrogance of ignorance.
UGH!
With Rick at about 300 pounds – isn’t gluttony a sin?
Hmmmmm
Carol, think we got about 15 inches total from Friday onward. I found it amusing that while we were under a Winter Weather advisory on Sunday, if I clicked on the NWS forecast site map directly to the west of my street, they were under a Winter Storm warning. Yeah, sure. You’re THAT accurate, huh?
Good morning Carol!
I hope all is swell! (and gettin’ better)
PIZZA?
Methinks Rick Warren didn’t allow himself enough self-evaluation as a late adolescent, to discover and develop his own personal sexuality. Now he’s stuck craving pizza. waaaaa!
Don’t take it out on the rest of us, you smug fatboy.
Everyone in the audience at the inauguration should have pizza in their hands. No, in their mouths.
Everyday I feel better, capt. Thanks for thinking of me.
I’m walking of sunshine, on 15 inches of snow!
#8 Hi, Carol! Good, from what I could tell. Should know in a week or two. It was a video submission. The part is for a commercial for a casino resort. If I get the part, it’ll be a two-day shoot with hotel and meals provided. Not too shabby!
“Just because I like pizza it doesn’t mean I should marry it”
If his analogy hold true – Warren actually wants a gay relationship (at least as much as he wants pizza?)
Hmmmmm
#14 I suppose he could have said “warm apple pie” (American Pie much?)
#16 – indeed, shaf, sounds like fun. I got my fingers crossed.
16 – Best of luck, shaf.
Showtime!
Heya, Frangela!
Good morning Frangela!
woot woot!
Best of luck Shaf!
I am totally jealous! It sounds like so much fun! (well a little like work but . . .)
One of my “Junk Mails” here at work today is from Ann Coulter whining about the Fairness Doctrine coming back. She has a bad dream where she tunes in to listen to the Drug-Addled Gasbag, but hears Al Franken instead (never mind that probably can’t happen because he’s got a good chance of being Senator Franken (HAHAHAHA Bill-O). Poor Ann *sniff*
brrrr, crap, it won’t stop going down, now it says -18F out back, Christ!… my chihuahua says, ‘me no goeeeng out dere, senor, no way’, had to put on his little sweater, and toss him out…he wanted in in under 30 seconds
#25 So the “Return of the Fairness Doctrine” is the new boogieman, eh? Funny, how they (the RW Blowholes) misinterpret the whole issue of concentration of media ownership as a threat to pull RW talk off the air.
Sounds like this is the new “brown people/take away your guns/people-are-going-to-force-you-to-marry-your-dog” issue.

“Sounds like this is the new “brown people/take away your guns/people-are-going-to-force-you-to-marry-your-dog” issue.”
The RW’s are always totally based in fear.
How can they live like that?
#29,
THAT would be a good start!
It is like “anti-trust” went the way of dial-up.

Excerpt:
we have right-wingers here who absolutely DESPISE Al Franken. Why, is unclear, ‘just can’t freakin stand him ‘, is the usual response, much like the Clinton hatred used to be, blind, unreasoning, unreasonable HATE. Its really wierd, what has Al done that is SO HORRIBLE?, I really don’t get it. Even some of my Dem friends wouldn’t vote for him because of it. He seems to be very polarizing, and I don’t understand why
Good morning guys! and gals! and Frangela! And thanks to ProducerChris for turning on the lights and turning the heat on here in cyberspace.
I have to say as a married-with-children straight practicing Catholic, the Rick Warren kerfuffle feels like a serious misstep. Maybe not so much that it happened, but the apparent blind spot chez Team Obama that it is a problem, and not just for a calculable percentage of LGBT voters who frankly have no other major party to go to so they’ll just have to put up or shut up. The fact that Warren was strategically involved in the Prop 8 problem should’ve tipped them off when the Prop 8 backlash began–there have to be other evangelical preachers to reach out to without that particular involvement.
37, Shaf…of course, in 1950 the cap top tax rate was like what, 90% on over a million income?, encouraging ceo’s to invest back in their companies, and into R&D….now..meh, not so much…
Jitterbug!
Old people’s phone.
As Mama said to Arianna, “Friends don’t let friends blog drunk!”
“what has Al done that is SO HORRIBLE”
He is smart, funny and progrssive.
THAT is enough for some of the knuckle-dragging types. They hate on automatic pilot – so looking for reason in their hate is a fools errand.
39.. Juliet!…I think the idea is to divide and conquer the Evangelicals, to begin to break up the unholy, unnatural alliance of them and the right-wing, and then smooth back down the GLBT’s feathers….don’t know if I agree, but, then again, I get paid to drive a truck…
#43 I’ve said for years, I prefer religion to be a little less organized.
What has Al done that was so horrible?
He made fun of Saints Rush and Bill-O. Or more specifically, he told the truth about them. Lots of RW panties got bunched up.
Hey guys!! Adam the Militant Obamacan of the SMS reporting in.
Hi kids! Just to let you know, today is the last day Steph and the Mooks, Frangela, et al will be heard on the air in Columbus Ohio.
As happened after the election in 2006, the rug has been pulled out from under the only progressive voice in Ohio. This time, the license for WVKO AM1580 was bought by St. Gabriel Radio…A Catholic broadcast network. So instead of Stephanie, Bill Press, Ed Schultz, and local minority voices, we’ll have “All Catholic…All the time!”
When the hell are these right wing-nuts and their social conservative fellow travelers going to be stopped from trying to silence any voice raised in opposition to their agendas?
42.. I guess. Al didn’t do as well with Indies here as did Obama, explaining the closeness of the race in comparison. working at the P.O., there is a very high ratio of vets, and an attendant skewing to the right of what should a very left-wing blue collar work-force. They don’t seem to get that Al is way more on their side than the Repubs are. Only this year, when in fear of their own jobs, did most of them break Dem.Having seen all the contracting out going on, the finally got wise…
Good morning Adam, Mark and Juliet!!!
#43 El Pedro, I’m sure you’re right — sigh — but it’s still depressing. Hey, we have a little blast of Minneapolis out here in New England today– 14 degrees and -5 windchill — minus the hot dish and downtown habitrails
I hope ElPedro is right at #43.
Either way – still WAY better than McCain/Palin no matter what happens.
I can temper my disagreements with Barack thus.
#47 Yeah, it sucks. Of course, we’ve been through this before (remember WTPG 1230 AM getting changed to rightwing talk and receiving the lowest Arbatron ratings in the Columbus market?)
We’ll survive via the Live Stream and other station’s streaming audio for now. Think of it as our Democratic Underground radio.
“We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969?”
50…got to love those Habitrails, there’s a whole sport of knowing the skyways, and where to pop down to the street and into the bars, then back up, around , over , down to another, then ride the light rail to the Mall of America….almost like the big-city!
Hey guys I have something to ask to my fellow bloggies here.
I am actually going to defend Obama on his decision to allow Warren to do his speech at the inauguration. I know it seems like I am being nice to the right wing and honestly I do not condone his actions. I’ll give three reasons for my position.
1. My top reason is that I actually gave up a lot for Obama, and as a Republican, I defended the Democrats and their position even though I did support the war. I gave up a lot of time campaigning for Obama as well I passed up a relationship to support Obama. The girl I dated was a black Republican who did not like Obama and I stayed with him, even though she felt that she could not break from her Christian beliefs on abortion and gay marriage, and I am a white Republican who was more open minded and sort of had this liberal streak I cannot get rid of myself.
2. We are actually in the holiday season and I want to show my Christmas spirit that I am not selfish about hating the Christian Right. No doubt, they are mean spirited people, but they are my countrymen too. We cannot afford fighting each other much longer, and our fighting had made us weaker as a country. We need to show them that we can get along and surpass our basic instinct of hate by actually celebrating life and time with our families, showing them we are not a threat to this nation.
3. I know this is too much to ask for some of ya’ll, but even though I have been angry at them for most of my life, we all need to set an example that we are not their enemies. Play the Garth Brooks song “Beallau Wood” and both Republicans and Democrats need to find a way out of the fight we are in and get our country out of the hole.
I hope it is not too much to ask.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Regarding the Detroit automakers’ “private jet” issue, I gotta point out that historically, anyway, there’s been a strong affiliation between the aviation industry and the automobile engine industry, even prior to WWII. I mean, it IS Mo-town, the Motor City. During WWII, Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh, among others, turned those plants on a dime and got them cranking out a Mitchell B-25 bomber EVERY HOUR at peak capacity.
About 20 years ago, private aircraft ownership (like Cessnas, basically Volkswagens with wings) in the three states of MI, OH and I think IL accounted for about a third of all US private plane owners (I grew up in Detroit, and count 4 pilots in the family). So culturally airplanes just aren’t that weird, or seen as purely luxury goods to display conspicuous consumption. Lots of kids pump gas and work menial jobs on and off airfields while working on their licenses, lots of blue collar mechanic types fly as well. GM has the largest in-house private airline in the country. It would be like criticizing FL Senators for drinking orange juice after a freeze drove OJ prices sky high. Still, it was pretty lame of the auto execs to let themselves get blindsided with the whole “private jet” thing. I’m just sayin’
Homophobia is hate – just like racism.
Not something to tolerate nor encourage.
IMHO
Hi Frances! Hi Angela! Thanks for the shout-out!

#57 Agreed. Again, the bank execs were not asked how they had arrived to the Congressional hearings, so the hypocrisy runs deep.

The car problems are exasperated due to the financial break down. There frak ups aren’t NEARLY as big as the frak ups by the banks. Or, the FED who didn’t do their frakking jobs.
Maybe I’m bias being from Michigan, but the auto industry is in a no win situation. They didn’t have the bank to make all kinds of cars, so the focused on what sold.

Depends on who you’re asking. John Waters would say no way.
Whoo-hoo! Producer Chris is a big sweetheart – we are not worthy.
Morning, Everyone! White Christmas in Seattle….6 or 7 inches of snow on my hill – this is not natural! No sandwich making today. Sadly the food bank is closed due to weather. And before all you fine people who live in snowier areas call us whimpy, Seattle doesn’t have enough plows or sand trucks to clear out these steep hills. We don’t have this much snow on a regular basis.

Now, whether it is good art is another story.
What do you define as “pollution” in this case?

#75 El Pedro: ” Of course, they are Christian fundies, and, of course, they ALL HOME SCHOOL! Odds of those kids having a normal outlook?…..none”
Well, actually, one of the funner things about genetics is a phenomenon called “sports” –even the most “pure” genetic heritage will produce a throwback or sport with prior genes, probably in the interest of genetic diversity. So, even though the St. John’s Waterdog (I think that’s the name), the breed that was the ancestor of the Newfoundland and the black Labrador retriever, is now extinct, its distinctive markings (white paws and tail tip) will turn up occasionally in modern Labs.
Same for your Christian fundie family. Maybe most of the kids will be docile and subservient, but odds are that out of twenty kids, a couple will rebel. Case in point: Ambrose Bierce (think Mark Twain’s older, bitterer counterpart–but wickedly funny), who grew up in an ultra-religious family of 11 kids in the 1840’s and ’50’s (the revival tent era–not much changes under the sun,) ran away to volunteer for the Civil War a few days after it started and devoted the rest of his life to criticizing organized religion and its deleterious effects.

Paradimethylaminobenzaldehyde,
Sodium citrate, ammonium cyanide,
Mix ‘em together and add some benzene,
And top off the punch with trichloroethylene.
Got gassed up last night with some furfuryl alcohol,
Followed it up with a gallon of propanol,
Tanked up on hydrazine ’til after noon,
Then spit on the floor and blew up the saloon.
Paradimethylaminobenzaldehyde,
Powdered aluminum, nitrogen iodide,
Chlorates, permanganates, nitrates galore,
Just swallow one drink and you’ll never need more.
Whiskey, tequila, and rum are too tame.
No, the stuff that I drink must explode into flame,
When I breathe and dissolve all the paint in the room,
And rattle the walls in a ground-shaking boom.
Paradimethylaminobenzaldehyde,
Go soak your head in a good strong insecticide,
Slosh it around and impregnate your brain,
With dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane.
If you divide 500 billion by 350 million (roughly dividing up the bailout among all American citizens) each would get about $1,428. Not $140,000, as is often misstated. Hi guys,
Remember John Bradshaw and his books on the Family? He was a former priest who grew up in an alocholic home and defined the dysfunctional family systems, naming the roles, ie, the hero, the scapegoat, the alcoholic?
I think every family creates a “teacher” (or scapegoat).
I’m guessing Obama is betting on the Evangelicals NOT being a lock-step group. I think there are plenty of quiet wives who are pro-choice, sullen teenagers who doubt god would be that hateful, etc.
In my family, my parents are rightwing nuts, but my older sister is a lawyer for the ACLU and I’m a social worker.
Bradshaw’s theory is that the members of a family constitute a system and that the system seeks balance.
Obama was thinking: “If I have Rick Warren (AKA Jerry Falwell Jr.) at my inauguration, I won’t have to worry about him releasing a fake videotape implying that I murdered a bunch of people (like Falwell Sr. did) or being denounced from the pulpit (as Clinton was by Falwell, et al).” Obama is smarter than all republicans, especially Warren, and smarter than most democrats. Have some faith in the guy–he knows what he’s doing.

“a sea of rainbow flags”
That would be a thing of great beauty!
We really must do something – even if it is all but ignored by the M$M.
Someone needs to point out that it is not “gays” or just advocates – it is really so many people that are just tired of the hate and second class citizenship we offer our brothers and sisters.
Freedom and equality cannot be prevented.
—
I did send a letter off to Rachel Maddow asking her broaden her description when talking about the Warren issue. She had said ‘and gays are big part of Obama’s base.’ True. But the anger over Warren is not limited to ‘the gays.’ Obama has ticked of all those who believe in equal rights. And we are not just ‘the base’, we are ‘the party.
“the system seeks balance”
That seems like a rule for the universe
yeah, Amy, they are still giving ‘jobwelldones’ to management at the P.O. this year, even though we’ve lost like 3-4 billion. They are not to be spoken of, however
Nature hates a vacuum. That’s why it’s a positive thing that republicans suck.
Turning your back is negative. It would be nice if we can find something more positive.
I’m going to keep pushing the flag idea. Flags are a celebration.
#136,
“Obama has ticked of all those who believe in equal rights. And we are not just ‘the base’, we are ‘the party.”
I totally agree. Just as I don’t have to be a man of color to feel the pain of racism, I don’t have to be LGBT to feel the pain offered up as excuses and faux rationale.
I remember all the same things being said when mixed race marriage was being challenged by the H8rs.
UGH!
136, I think a sea of rainbow flags, with half the crowd facing the wrong way, would be hard for even the MSM to ignore
#134 Just throwin’ this out, but maybe Obama chose Warren so that he could have cover to say (as he did at the presser after the announcement), “I think that it is no secret that I am a fierce advocate for equality for gay and lesbian Americans.”
Could the perception of choosing Warren (as an olive branch to the right) really be a head fake instead?

I did make a note in the letter that I know I can’t feel the same level pain, I do share the anger. This hurts our society, so it hurts us all.
Why not make flags with noisemakers on them? Then we could wave our rainbow flags in solidarity and make enough noise to drown out Rev. Warren.
Since I’m from a family of Jews, I’m going to hell anyway, so why not really disrespect the Reverend?
I think a sea of rainbow flags would be eloquent.
#142 Just an FYI, at the Inauguration platform, no signs, flags, or umbrellas (ella, ella) will be allowed by the Secret Service. So, the back-turn would have to suffice.
#135, I do what I can.
I’m all Warrened out. I’ve followed the internicene warfare over on Kos over it, I agree with the LGBTers that it’s a slap in the face and a fool and disrespectful move.
Nonetheless, the common response, which we also saw with dubious cabinet picks, of “trust Obama, he knows what he’s doing” seems an awful lot like magical thinking, and is potentially dangerous. Elected officials, without constant pressure, will kowtow to the establishment and take the path of least reisistance. We only got the New Deal because there was constant pressure on FDR, not because he “led us”. Obama will be the same way.
mixed race marriages are still being denounced by the right wing. It’s only fear of being marginalized that prevents them from saying it out loud in public places. At some point, the hate will reach a tipping point and we’ll hear it as a campaign slogan. Racism is endemic in American society. Since we all belong to races, we need to fear it and continue to speak out. The main thing the white right wing is afraid of is BECOMING a minority. They are well on their way. At some point in the next decade or two, white people will be less than 50% of the population, and despite their insistance on being called a majority, white males have never outnumbered white females (boys die a lot more than girls–they die disproportionately from childhood diseases and suicide, they drive crazily and drink too much (often at the same time), and shoot each other on the streets and in wars).
But Amy’s idea is better.

I am torn. I see the need of opening up a dialog with “chrisitans” if we are ever going to overcome this problem of homophobia and unequal rights for some. I thought this was a gesture at first which might give us that chance. Warren is better then the Farwalls and there is room for change. But, the more this man opens his mouth, the more I turn my back on that. He’s now using this invitation to further his bias. The invitation should be pulled.

Dang. Maybe we should all just break into same sex kisses.
how about a million Kazzoo chorus of, ‘We Shall Overcome’ to drown him out?
for the liberals to turn their back on a praying preacher would be a very bad image to leave in the hands of the right wing main stream media. we need to be respectful because an attack on warren at such a time is like an attack on God (I know it isn’t really, but that’s how it would be portrayed).
or, everybody could just sing it
I’m going to be watching from the National Mall. They’ve said no backpacks, no strollers, no chairs. The Secret Service has said nothing about flags, or flags with noisemakers!
For me, the whole judging Obama thing is quite simple. And it begins on January 20th, after Pastor Warren’s sermon. Here’s what I will be looking for from Obama:
1) Is he willing to implement a massive, economic re-construction providing millions of green public works jobs?
2) Is he serious about beginning the withdrawal of troops of Iraq?
3) Is he willing to immediately terminate all programs of torture and shut down Gitmo?
4) Is he going to move quickly to pass a universal health care program?
5) Is he going to give full support to passage of the Employee Free Choice Act?
6) is he going to use the White House to move us closer to full legal rights for gay and Lesbian couples?
7) is he going to get serious about comprehensive immigration reform?
http://marccooper.com/warren-and-peace/
*****
Another POV on the issue.
I agree the Warren presence is offensive. I also can’t stop it, so I’m waiting to see how Barack acts in office. I expect a big pro-gayrights move early on….equality in the military, maybe?
I also think it is a diversion of our attention from the over-all scr*w job that’s being done to all of us right now.
I am so outraged by the last minute give away the Bushies are doing. We’re all gonna be selling beads by the highway, gay and straight, if they have their way. It is a class war going on; while we’re angry over Warren, they intend to ride off with our future!
143 — I really don’t think so. One of the things Obama is about, and it seems to me the thing that confuses so many people about him, is inclusion.
Now, that seems contradictory. But I think he really means to show that even though the fundies are exclusionary, the way forward to a less divided country is to include the contradictory views in the same forum. He’s saying “Rick Warren is a man of God. I disagree with him, many here disagree with him, but he represents a huge, powerful constituency in this country. If we’re to progress in a unified way in this country, we’re going to have to include these people, indeed value these people, as we move forward into the next era of American politics.” Somehow, we have to have the evangelical Christians and the LGBT community in the same arena, next to each other, dealing with each other. If we can all learn to coexist, won’t everybody be better off?

I’m not really a fan of drowning out someone who’s been invited. It is rude. There has to be a nice non-violent, non asshole way to protest.
Um,
“ we need to be respectful”
Not of hate. Not me at least, nor from my point of view.
It is like being respectful of the KKK.
Hate SUX!
#153 That would be Crazy Awesome (to paraphrase comedian Demetri Martin)
#157 The Mall is more relaxed (on security) so I think the flags will work there.
No flags? No Problem! As a child of the 60’s and a dyer, I recommend rainbow T-shirts. Wear them under your coat, and at the beginning of the prayer, whip off the coats. Voila! A sea of rainbows.
Maybe people need T-shirts that say “Get thee behind me, Satan”, so when they turn their back to Rick Warren, they’re saying his message is anti-Christian. They will have put him behind them, after all, which is where Jesus says his false followers should be.
When Molly Ivins needed to respond to the KKK marching on Austin to the capitol building, she and her liberal, free-speech protecting friends didn’t try to stop them, they just mooned them. A big wave of mooning.
In January in Washington, it’ll be too cold to moon anybody. Turning our backs on Wozzface will be a symbolic mooning.
And if anybody has a lead-filled snowshoe, well…
#161 I don’t think there’s a “nonasshole way to protest”. Cause to the supporters of the Reverend, any protest is going to be a little bit assholey, cause you disagree with their position of hate.
It’s like when the US first invaded Iraq, if you disagreed with the government you hated America. If you protest Reverend Warren, you hate religion (or Christianty). There’s no middle in the right wing.
Cyndi-I would wear my T-shirt over several layers of clothes.
El Pedro 154 – in the spirit of inclusion, rainbow T-shirts AND a kazoo chorus of “We Shall Overcome”. That would be awesome!

You are so cute with you’re mad.
Seriously though, it’s about respect for President Elect Obama and the day, not for Warren. Warren does not have the power to take down the celebration of the day. He’s just a little wart on something that is otherwise amazing. We should try to keep the joy of the day intact… in my humble opinion.
#160 Good point, madduane. Obama’s recurring theme is “we can be better than that“.
I saw an interview of Obama by Rachel Maddow (just before the election), and he teased her (a bit) for wanting to pick a fight with the Republicans. Not that could couldn’t do it, but what would it achieve. Yep, it’s a new day in politics.
Protests are suppose to be a little protesty?
Turning your back on Warren would not be an insult to Barack – just a message of solidarity with out LGBT brothers and sisters.
It would be silent and very respectful if you ask me.
Better than noise making or throwing shoes!
173 — thanks, shaf. I was afraid my point had been lost.
Good Grief, you don’t even have to be a dyer to be stylin’ a rainbow tee at the inauguration – I googled, and at Cafe Press there are a number of tasteful options:
http://shop.cafepress.com/rainbow
#173, well, we’ve seen what accommodating them at every turn has achieved.
If Obama is going to try to tell us that we haven’t acted in a bipartisan fashion towards them for the last 14 years, he’s got another thing coming.
#168If you protest Reverend Warren, you hate religion (or Christianty). There’s no middle in the right wing.
Yes? And there’s supposed to be a problem with that? I’d like to think the founding fathers were respected enough that it wasn’t until Bush 2K that a specifically Christian prayer was uttered as part of an inauguration, but my source could be wrong. There should be nothing denominational at all!

177 — there’s a difference between “accommodating” and simply accepting them with their contrary opinions. You don’t have to agree, but why not make the points of agreement — such things as love of country, our somewhat imperfect love of and respect for freedom — the guide, instead of the disagreements?
“Right-wingers need limits (laws) to stop their greed.”
Sadly, I think greed has no particular party or ideology.
Too many greedy SOB’s from all places, parties and of all stripes.
UGH!
it may seem pithy, but, a bird with only one wing cannot fly. There is of neccessity always going to be a dichotomy of opinion in this or any other country. People are opinionated, and nurse their ideologies with fierce pride. If one side or the other ever completely took over, the whole thing would spiral out of control. We work together whether we want to or not, and the truth is always going to be closer to the middle than one side or the other. There ARE absolutes, but, nobody has a lock on all that is right, or wrong.
#182 The repeal of 1999’s Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (which repealed the provisions of the Glass-Steagall Act that prohibit a bank holding company from owning other financial companies) would also be good move.
We love you Chris for the liveblog.
I share in the anger – we the taxpayers should just take our money back from these banks. I want our money back!!!
#186, from a policy standpoint, is there a difference? Elected Dems have meekly accepted Republican framing, gone along with Republican policies, given away the farm when Republicans made demands.
There’s nothing new about reaching out. Obama will learn quickly that when you reach out to mad dogs, you get bit.
the Agnostic in me slipped out a little bit, there
Instant flag: wear two rainbow t-shirts under your coat. Whip off your coat, pull off the t-shirts (I assume you have something else on underneath) and pull each tshirt down over your arm so your arm enters one armhole and exits the other, leaving the body of the t-shirt to flap in the breeze. Now you have two arms with a flag on each one. No breeze? wave your arms and upper body.
I can guarantee that nothing that could be used as a weapon will be allowed in the vicinity–and that includes poles to wave flags from. Here’s another idea for a flagpole, if you want to risk arrest: Buy some old fashioned television rabbit ears. Use wirecutters to cut the antennas off the stand. You can telescope the rabbit ears so they’ll fit nicely in a pants pocket or the inside pocket of your jacket. When you need a flag pole, pull it out, un-telescope it so it is three feet long, use paper clips or clothes pins to attach your flag to it. Hold it high. “JESUS LOVES ME BECAUSE I AM GAY” “GOD MADE ME THIS WAY” “BECOME IMMORTAL–HAVE SEX WITH A POET”
A Day without Sparta….. like a day without sunshine… or a day without beer…. *sighs*
why not make the points of agreement — such things as love of country, our somewhat imperfect love of and respect for freedom — the guide, instead of the disagreements?
Because Rick Warren is about 300 lbs. of ugly waste, stuck to the body politic’s colon walls like spackle or paste.
it may seem pithy, but, a bird with only one wing cannot fly.
Warren and the homophobic haters aren’t a wing, they’re a tumor.
In these times, the country needs to come together as much as is possible. I think Obama understands this. Rick Warren, although not palatable to me, is less egregious than many right-wing preachers. However, by holding out an olive branch to people of the evangelical right by having Rick Warren give the invocation, Obama may at least diffuse some negative feelings about him from the right and show that he really does believe we are ONE nation composed of diverse beliefs. We are ALL Americans, regardless of political stripes or religious affiliations (or lack of, I’m an Atheist and many of my belief system need to chill). This is part of the change we need, “I accept you for who you are; please accept me for who I am.” Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and happy holidays to all.
You know, we are smart enough and articulate enough to push for the regulatory and other changes we need (see shaf 189) consistently during the Obama administration. A community organizer organizes communities, including ours! Now he is stuck with us. We need to get active and stay active to push for the changes that are needed to improve this country for “We the People”. There is no place in the Constitution where it says “We the fat cat corporations.”

I’ve made my point, either agree or don’t. I think I’m reading Obama’s actions correctly, it seems to agree with what I’ve heard him say in interviews and in The Audacity of Hope. I think we need to move beyond hating those we disagree with, even when their opinions themselves seem like hate to us.
I also agree with Obama that the country is at stake over this. I have those folks in my own family that straddle this line most emphatically. I’d like to believe that we can work together to make the country better for all of us. And maybe that we can all learn from each other.
It occurs to me that the way to defeat hate is not to hate or exclude.
#188 ElPedro is right. And oddly enough, in cases when one party attains complete control and obliterates the “enemy” it is usually not long before the new ruling party splits in half and the process starts again. This seems to be the natural state of government, that even the most benevolent of rulers will soon have opposition.
198….like the story that Harytmann likes to tell of FDR, when told he needed to do this or that policy, FDR would say,’Make me’. We need to make him do what we want.
Lonely man jumps into polar bear’s cage in Berlin
From Associated Press
December 22, 2008 10:50 AM EST
BERLIN – A man jumped into the Berlin zoo enclosure of famed polar bear Knut on Monday, but officials were able to keep the animal away from the intruder by distracting him with a leg of beef, police said.
The 37-year-old man jumped over a fence into a water-filled ditch at the edge of the bear’s enclosure Monday morning, police said in a statement.
Zoo keepers, who had just let Knut into his outdoor enclosure, were able to lure the bear back into his cage by producing a leg of beef.
Police said the man, a German, was less cooperative, initially ignoring instructions to leave the enclosure. He was led away unharmed but, although he was soaked and cold, he refused to undergo a medical checkup.
Police said that, before being let go, the man told them that he felt lonely and the bear appeared lonely, too.
Knut, now age 2, was hand-raised after his mother rejected him at birth. He rose to stardom early last year as a cute white ball of fluff, but has since grown rapidly into a hulking 440-pound (200-kilogram) predator.
Warren and the homophobic haters aren’t a wing, they’re a tumor
Kinda sounds a bit hatey to me…
Rick Warren seems to be able to refuse his desires to jump the bones of women with whom he is not married – but he is a slave to high fat and high calorie diets?
I think gluttony is a sin worse than any sex.
#204, but the two divided parties are more like the party they divided from, and the old ideologies pass away.
How many political parties openly advocate rule-by-aristocracy in Britain or Europe anymore?
“Warren and the homophobic haters aren’t a wing, they’re a tumor
Kinda sounds a bit hatey to me…”
I thought it was funny. (or an effort to be funny)
Not hate just humor lost on some.
‘every now and again,a mighy Emperor will arise, and stand

ans as always, the huddled masses will rise, and cast him into the night
and, having tasted blood, will in their own turn succumb
to the siren song of power, and might’
from my song, ‘Smoking Ruins’
gluttony is as deadly a sin as lust.
rejecting hate is not hate. When a “christian” professes Jesus and advocates hate, he is asking to be rejected. He knows that the reason for the rejection is his advocacy of hate. He can stop doing that far more easily than a gay person could stop loving others of the same sex. When he does, the rejection will stop.
I think we need to move beyond hating those we disagree with, even when their opinions themselves seem like hate to us.
When their opinions seem like hate, I’m going to take them at their word. If Obama wants to move beyond hating people he disagrees with, he shouldn’t give them such a forum. All this tells me is that Obama feels like he needs to sucker punch the GLBT constituency that voted for him in a cynical ploy to make the GOP evangelists evangelists who vote with the Democrats.
The Rev. Wright would have been a better choice.

Really, that is my POV.
Maybe you could find a way to celebrate the differences?
Not everybody has the same “take” on what is or isn’t funny.
The protest over Reverend Warren shouldn’t just be from those who support LGBT people. It should be from everyone Warren’s denounced, like the hell bound Jews.
My grandmother was very upset for the two days she thought Obama was a Muslim, she should be outraged about Rev. Warren.
Silly rabbi. Hell is for kids.
El Peddro 205 – Exactly!
Dear Pres Elect Obama,
I’ve got good news and bad news – The good news is that your 50 state, community organizing strategy was successful in waking up progressives and other underrepresented groups and now you are president.
The bad news is that now the progressive movement and other underrepresented groups are now organized and watching what you do. We are not going to go back to sleep or shut up.
#209 Point taken, but there have been some significant tipping points in history where new movements overwhelmed the establishment, e.g. Am. Revolution, French Revolution, Bolshevik Revolution. But you’re right in that most of the time change occurs incrementally.
This left-center/right-center debate that our TV pundits have been having shows how timid and weak our political system has become. What some would call a radical change, Obama’s election, seems more to me like a slight wiggle to the left. Now it may lead to something more substantial down the road, but so far we’re not seeing much that I would classify as radical.
215, I sure have, like when they want to tell a racist joke in the break room, I actually made up a joke about it, goes like this: “How do you begin a racist joke?”, said as I take a good long look around the corner of the room,( making sure it is empty)

Argh! Not worth pursuing this any further.
It’s not a perfect world, there are no perfect people. I’m trying to support the idea that we can share this country with people we disagree with, and maybe by doing so, we can lessen the hate, and overcome those disagreements. The whole history of the Gay rights movement has been about exposing people to who gay folks really are. I’m not saying we have to agree with Rick Warren. I do think we ought to value him as a citizen and leader in this country, and to include him and all the millions of people in this country who he represents and who feel he speaks for them. We can be ourselves and not feel like we’re compromising who we are and how we feel about ourselves by being generous enough to allow him and the large portion of the population of this country to feel we value them as people, even if we loathe their hateful opinions. Having him give an invocation at the inaugural is symbolic that he and the folks he stands for are worthy of inclusion. It is not the same as saying we agree with them.
I’m leaving the blog for today. I can’t spend all this effort on this. You disagree, fine. I can’t change your mind, fine. I just wanted to make the point.
Love you all,
Buh Bye, Bloggoes!
Gabby Husein;
Thank you for your WARM thoughts. I would have responded earlier but, I was chasing my retarded Beagle, my demon kitty and, our 2 fish all over the house with blankets for cocooning……
Damn! Show a fish a blanket and BOY HOWDY, they run like weenies!!
On a whole different point;
I read the attached article by Cenk Uyger, and thought this board would appreciate it’s wisdom.
It was written to those who use the bible to justify their hatred of anything and everything.. Including Same Sex Issues. It’s a great answer.

Enjoy!!!
I’m home on a snow day up here near Buffalo – 30 -40 mph winds + 18 inches of snow = SNOW DAY!
The Walmart in Houghton MI, where my in-laws live, has successfully killed off: one of the two grocery stores, the entire strip mall down the street, a hardware store, a wallgreen’s drugstore, paint store, Jo-ann’s Fabric, a couple of gas stations, a couple of convienience stores. The other grocery store and a Shopko are barely hanging on. But, they got a Walmart!
#243 Their loss, I guess. We’re having a fun time today!
John Louise Hussein Smith 242 – Presiding Bishop Katherine is awesome! Both a scientist (oceanographer) and a religious leader. She has challenged the Episcopal church and its people to reduce our carbon use by 50% in 10 years. I would love to hear her speak at the Inaug.
#249 I would think that 30 -40 mph winds + 18 inches of snow = SNOW DAY!, but in Buffalo? I thought people up there (up the transport from Lockport) scoffed at anything under 3 feet.
Here’s the Dubai resort story:

247 – The right wing religious bigots have had center stage for eight years…even longer and Obama gives the likes of Rick Warren a position of honor at this inauguration? It’s a slap in the face.

I love Frangela!
That was a blog entry from Huffington Post. It’s not factual, but is an extrapolation of what Warren has preached from his pulpit.
This is a smart crowd who I have no doubt worked that out for ourselves, just like you and I had to. The point of reading it is that it’s a quick catalog of just how ugly Warren’s rhetoric is, calling abortion a holocaust, calling on women to submit to their husbands.
The best that can be said about this mess is that Obama just doesn’t really hear what preachers actually say when their lips are moving.
Cyndi;
Warm thoughts right back at ya kid!
I read about what you guys are going through and I thought if there was a way; I would go up there and spoon with you till the ice melts outside.
Seeing as I can’t get outta my garage, I’m gonna have to settle by spooning with my fish…. Not the same thing and very little body heat is exchanged with/from my little bitty Goldfish……
Ooooo…”gild the lily” – you don’t hear that phrase too much these days! One of my personal favorite expressions!
The was a time! w00t
Crazy rants!! Luv ‘em!
Bye, gang! Bye, Frangela!
Does it mean I hate Step/Mooks if I LOVE FRANGLA???
LOVE YOU GALS!!!
Yes, there was a time in this country!
The Freeman 263, That is very sweet (although spooning a goldfish is rather problematic!) I will be spooning with 2 large half maine coon cats who have responded to the cold by parking their big butted selves on my lap.
Gotta go – they are demanding breakfast.
Cheers, Everyone….keep those rainbow tees in mind if you are going to the inauguration.
I think the tattoo guy is “Idiot of the Day”. Next trip to the tattoo parlor, he needs to add a bar code of his SSN.
bye, bye, all…ciao belli!

Good Vibes to Mama with her Republican octagenarian mother
and to my fellow bloggers!
See you guyz! Frangela, you were awesome as usual! Now just get KTLK to get rid of that rotten new interface they put on their website that doesn’t work anymore. I couldn’t hear any streaming this weekend from KTLK.
No SPARTA – well with Frangela would it have been more FRATA!
Maybe on the morrow!
Ciao for now all you good folks!
Have a GREAT day!
#277 And thanks again to ProducerChris for the fresh sandbox.

Let’s reach out to the Klan. Why isn’t David Duke up there?
—
For every David Duke there is a Sen. Byrd. Racism isn’t a life long condition.
We have to decide if we just want to act out to make ourselves feel better, but harden people’s POVs. Or, do we want to act in a way which will bring people over to our side, but make us have to bit our tongues a bit.

Huh. I have often said that pizza is a lot like sex.
When it’s good, it’s very good, and when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good.
Okay, Mike, let’s go. (They don’t move.)

Yes. My goal is to turn the world into uppity gays. But, I will settle for them supporting equal rights for all.
290 I tried with Firefox and Safari – and they don’t make IE for Macs anymore.

I’ve never hit before.
*makes farta wish*
YES!
frakkedinmi, you farta’d! *snorts*
You think these people will come “over to our side?” LOL.
They never will, so we may as well continue to act with no less resolve nor surrender more power than they will.
We just have to wait for their children, who don’t see the problem their parents have with the issue.
another non-sparta
And frakkedinmi takes the laurel!
Adios, amigos!

Never say never. Minds are changed every single day. Otherwise where would be no votes for women, for African Americans. There would be no open and proud gays on TV.
If you think there is no hope, then why bother even protesting?
great show. How I wish Steph would provide three hours of frangela after the end of the stephanie miller show.
Yay, frakkedinmi! Nice hit!
Even if there is no hope, to fail to register your protestations would be to join the oppressor. All it takes for evil to triumph is for liberals and progressives to keep their mouths shut.
Yeah. I hit it.

Because not to protest is to surrender, and we are shaming them in front of their children, who get the message, and may, perhaps, teach their parents.

I totally agree. I just think protest need to keep the greater goal in mind. The only two really overwhelming victories in modern society were MLK and Gandi. Those who protested with them laid down their pride and lives for the greater cause.
Acts like those of Code Pink do nothing for the cause. It just makes them feel self important while the have a good time. It hurts the peace movement by hardening peoples views agaist our ideas.

So, you just want to feel good about protesting, not bring about change?
So, you just want to feel good about protesting, not bring about change?
No, I’ve been around long enough to have noticed that change doesn’t happen overnight, it doesn’t happen by surrendering and acting politely, and that more people will die, succeeded by a generation that doesn’t share their prejudice, than will have their minds changed, so long as we refrain from ignoring the issue in hopes that politeness and niceness will triump. Reason can’t reach people who have eschewed its use, so, I’m off.
So I was at a Xmas party in San Francisco last night, talked to a woman originally from upstate NY. I suggested that she might want to check out the Stephanie Miller Show and she said “I get the Podcasts!” ***Ding***
(speaking of Podcasts – is anybody around to put them up this week?)
Pleaseeee…I need podcast….wwwaaahhhh!!!
